Essence Magazine Fires White Fashion Director

Fashion director Ellianna Placas of Essence magazine has reportedly been fired from her post on the African-American mag after more than two years.

According to sources, Placas’ departure from the magazine was due to her and editor-in-chief Constance White not seeing eye to eye on ideas for the magazine’s fashion stance:

“They had different visions for fashion coverage,” said a source.

The hiring of Placas who is white, sparked major controversy back in 2010 amongst fans and readers of the predominantly African-American title.

A spokesperson for the publication has confirmed that Placas has left the company and a search for her replacement is undergoing.

Since 1970, Essence magazine has been a publication targeted towards African-American women. The hiring of Ellianna had been an issue for not only the editorial staff but also loyal readers.

Do you think Essence will be able to recapture its audience and readership now that she is gone?
