This will probably fall on deaf ears but here goes:

Brothers and sisters need to wake up and develop a knowledge of self. The minute you start believing that we don’t need each other, we have a huge problem of social disorder. We are the only race that publicly and overtly denegrates its women for the world to see.

It is so painful to read comments that admonish black women about “stepping it up” and various added insults that would promote their inferiority to white women. The pain comes from knowing that black women have been the backbone of the black community and according to Sojourner Truth, “the mules of this world”. Black women have long since taken care of the family while also holding down the men. Even when a black man may not have been able to find a job, there were black women putting aside their pride and dignity and scrubbing some white families toilets and taking care of that families children while her own went without their own mother.
These kinds of sacrifices are still being made today. My mother and I participated in the march for Sean Bell in NYC in 2006. I marched in Washington DC to support the Jena 6 (7 months pregnant mind you). When I looked out at both crowds, all I could see was a sea of faces of mostly black women and children. Like me, most of them have no personal connection to the people involved in these grave injustices; Most of us just feel a sense of compassion.
Think about that when we get ready to bash sisters.

Oh and by the way, I saw no white women at either of these events. Maybe they were there, but I surely didn’t see them. Perhaps they felt it was more important to be “at the gym” working on those “nice butts” some people seem to enjoy so thoroughly.

There will be at least twice as many pictures with Kobe and his family than Shaq with his wife. I know it’s hard to disregard some of the vitriol that is tossed at us, particularly from members of our own race. Regarding the NYC video posted yesterday, I had watched a similar video months ago, and to be honest, I was hurt to my core, to the point of tears. During my life, in predominantly white environments, I’ve been called the N-word and been subject to other humiliation, but that pales in comparison to the pain I feel when hatred and ignorance comes out of the mouths of people who look like me.

But I have to dig deeper and understand that many of those individuals have a well of deeply embedded pain and misperceptions that have absolutely nothing to do with me. They deserve my pity much more than resentment. You can’t change or control another person’s beliefs, but you can change and control your reaction.

really losing our men? 5.5% of all married black men are married to non-black women. I think we are doing okay. If you look at BET and music videos for a true portrayal of the black woman your are already lost. And ultimately it is the black man who chooses outside of his race that will suffer the misfortune. Girl, my parents made sure I had books, participated in black history quiz bowls, etc. when I was growing up. I took AP American History in high school and I think the only time we spent on black American history was a class on the Civil Rights Movement (and I was one of two blacks in the class, so it was a little uncomfortable).

I voluntarily gave a few presentations for my high school classes during Black History Month because I thought it was important to have our accomplishments acknowledged.

Actually, my American History teacher pretty rammed a quick synopsis of black history — basically slavery and then a big forward jump to the 60′s and MLK — and that was about the extent of it.
