New York Governor Paterson is not happy about how a SNL skit made fun of his blindness:

The usually self-deprecating Paterson called the spoof “a third-grade depiction.” That’s about how old Henry Williams was when he learned not to take teasing personally.

“I went to public school in New York City,” Williams explained, as he leaned on his white cane outside Vision Services for the Blind on W. 23rd St. “So I learned early not to let it bother me.”

“The governor needs thicker skin if he’s gonna be working in politics,” riffed Feliciano Rios, 34, who has been blind seven years. “Comedians just need material. They need to eat, too!”

A lot has changed since FDR felt compelled to hide his disability while in office – taking underground tunnels from Grand Central to the Waldorf-Astoria so no one would see his wheelchair.

When a newly paralyzed Christopher Reeve made his first appearance onstage after his accident, the audience was heartbroken.

Best friend Robin Williams released laughs like a bag of doves as he wheeled him out. “He’s on a roll!” Williams quipped. Even Reeve chuckled.

Is anything off-limits anymore?

Look on the bright side Governor, or rather, have someone look on the bright side for you; there’s no such thing as bad publicity.

Bossipers, this skit is kind of funny, but who thinks it went too far?

  • Lyoshi

Wow only in America a blind man whao cheated on his wife and became Governer can be offended by what others deem as jokes!!! bla bla get over it….Laughter is good and we all ahve laughed at someone else’s expense…yes he does need thicker skin!!!

  • Tae

I think he is taking it way to personal. They make fun of everyone.

  • SLB

I think this is hilarious! It’s all in fun, and everyone knows that no one is off limits to comedians. Comedians have impersonated Stevie and Ray for years!

lol. robin williams is a FOOL!

  • xav

lol…that was funny tho. he needs to lighten up it is SNL afterall, its what they do

  • princess07

I think you have to respect people’s wishes. Just because Stevie, Ray, and Christopher Reeves laughed it off, doesn’t mean this guy has too. This man’s comfort level is probably not there yet. Oh yeah and BTW….I thought the joke was stupid.

  • Nisha M

I think it’s okay to make fun of a person as long as you are not picking on their disabilities or something that they can’t help. On the other hand, it it is okay with that person then I guess it’s cool.

  • sweetone

SNL makes fun of everyone: fat, skinny, black, white, and the blind don’t watch if you cant take a joke.

  • Nina Knows

oh well bet he didnt see that one coming…..

  • aww man

    THats f’d up, lol

  • tanisha

he needs to stop worrying about SNL and worry about NOT CUTTING FUNDS FOR HEALTH CARE AND PUBLIC SCHOOL EDUCATION. those are the two things that should never be touched. maybe they should cut some of their salaries and nyc wont be in this crunch. HE IS A TERRIBLE GOVERNOR! Raising the subway and bus like we dont pay enough for the poor service. HE SUCKS AND ITS GOOD THAT HE IS OFFENDED BECAUSE I AM OFFENDED THAT HE SUCKS AS A GOVERNOR

  • Vee

I didn’t see the skit but I can just IMAGINE how funny it was. If this guy wants to continue to have a prosperous political career I suggest he develop a thicker skin. SNL picks on EVERYBODY-he’s no exception.

  • blah

That skit was hilarious…they were making fun of him being a bad governer, with his blindness (and past transgressions) secondary…I thought it was funny and he needs to lighten up

  • http://annoymous@yahoo.com anonymous says the one who keeps it moving

i think it was tacky and stupid .. how you going to make fun of the blind.. Stevie Wonder or who else its tacky and ignorant… not funny at all to me and then after they do and say stupid ish they want to apologize like a damn kid!

  • Pretty Tony

I know these skits you can impersonate a person but to make fun of the disability itself is another. I think they ran the f**k out! Pretty tacky to me as far as I am concerned!

  • Kierah

totally different from Stevie. They did not make Stevie Wonder, a politician, seem like a complete bumbling inept idiot. At least their version of Stevie could still do his job.
Patterson memorizes his speeches and well as multiple layouts so that he can get around effectively. His administration has had no major gaffes or stumbles so the skit was completely off base as well. Clearly this governor has no problem with thick skin as he confessed to infidelity and past drug use. He has no issue with being exposed to the public but he takes the way he does his job seriously. Those hoes need to sit down! (And can we talk about the fact that SNL has this white man portraying a Black man yet again?!)

  • Black Beauty

SNl does not discriminate, they poke fun at everyone, and the skit was funny as hell. LMAO

  • Sistah_PhD2be

I agree with you Kierah it’s alot like watching “Black Face” 360.

  • Skylar

SNL did it to Stevie Wonder (a la Eddie Murphy). Now SNL did it to a Senator. But when they were doing it to Stevie, I don’t remember so much backlash.

  • sweetone

@Skylar U R rite they didnt people are way to serious lighten up……who complians when they do a skit of someone in a wheelchair or when they paint someone extra black or when they have a fat body suit on someone i could go on….

  • Sawyer

Although this was ignorant as hell, it was still equally as funny…lol!

  • Raquel26

OMG! Come on Governer Patterson…it was a joke. I understand that your being blind is a serious deal, and that you would rather not have people make fun of it…BUT…we are in America where everyone is fair game.

Besides, I’m sure that you laughed at the Palin skit when it aired.

  • LetsBReal

Im sorry it was funny, that was SNL does!Hell he didn’t even see it right….rofl

  • Michele

I watched it and was dying laughing. It was the only funny thing on that episode. He needs to relax and laugh a bit. Plenty of people with disabilities or whatever you want to call it laugh at themselves. He is blind not mentally challenged. What’s the big deal? And you are one of the few black governors. Big whoop.

  • PurpleHaze

How did he see the skit anyway???

  • Jewish Baby

    what exactly does he see…. . . . .. … .as being the problem?

  • Shani

AAH nothing better than mean spirited fun at someone elese expense. Crush them all for some laughs.

  • lisa

I watched the skit, and aside from not being funny, it was offensive. Not to the governor, but to blind people. There is a difference between making fun of someone that has a disability, and making fun of the disability. This is making fun of the disability, and that’s not funny.
