On The Come Up: ‘Awkward Black Girl’ Creator Issa Rae Gets Her Own Television Series On ABC!

Awkward black girl is doing big things!

Issa Rae, the creator of the popular web series The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl will be writing and co-executive producing the comedy series that has been picked up by ABC:

The premise of I Hate L.A. Dudes will center “on an aspiring journalist, new to Los Angeles, who becomes the lone female voice on a budding, male-driven Internet talk show, while learning to decode the often humiliating and exasperating rules of the LA dating scene.”

Deadline broke the news on Monday that Sholaland, the production company headed by Shonda Rhimes, the African-American producer behind hits like Grey Anatomy, Private Practice and Scandal, which has established its brand in drama, have been looking to expand into the comedy sold the new comedy to ABC.

And according to the Washington Post, Rae said, one of her biggest issues about black characters on mainstream television and film had been that “I don’t see me.” But, she says, the deal with ABC shows that “there are still opportunities for awkward black girls.

Congratulations Mr.Rae! It’s incredible to see someone putting out an honest, nuanced and intelligently hilarious depiction of Black characters on TV. We will be tuning in!
