NAACP and Cochran Firm Investigating Death of Billey Johnson

According to Livesteez, this young man, Billey Joe Johnson, allegedly committed suicide while being pulled over for a routine stop:
Less than one week after the tragic death of George County, Mississippi football star, Billey Joe Johnson, the family has hired Jerome Carter of The Cochran Firm in Mobile, Alabama to represent them. Billey Joe Johnson, 17, died early Monday morning, Dec. 8, after what authorities say was a routine traffic stop. A George County sheriff’s deputy pulled Johnson over after he reportedly ran a stop sign and a red light. While checking the license information, the deputy said he heard a gunshot and then saw Johnson on the ground by the driver’s door of the vehicle the youth had been driving. The shotgun was found lying on Johnson’s chest. Billey Joe was known as one of the state’s most gifted athletes. He had received scholarship offers from many universities, including Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, LSU, Mississippi, Mississippi State, and Oregon. “There has been so much speculation in the community surrounding the circumstances of the death of one of the most respected high school athletic stars in the area,” says Jerome Carter, with The Cochran Firm Mobile. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has been called because a deputy was present at the scene of the incident. They are looking into the possibility that Johnson may have died from a self-inflicted, gunshot wound.
“The family cannot understand why their son would take his own life with such a bright future ahead of him,” continued Carter. “They are looking for answers.”

Makes no sense at all. I thought police cars had video cameras that recorded any traffic stops or any time an officer pulled someone over. So my question is Where is the tape.

I trust that an thorough investigation will uncover the truth. As unlikely as it seems, he may have been distraught causing him to run the red light and stop sign. Of course, there should be gun powder on his hand. It would be too obvious had the police shot him and the coverup story unlikely. Regardless, my thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

I’m from MS and I don’t believe it was a suicide. Once you start looking at the county where this happened, and the situation around it – you know what it is – A MURDER.
I hope they find the person that did this, and my prayers go to his loved ones.

1) He was obviously on his way to commit this “suicide” if he sped through a red light and a stop sign. He already had a gun in his possession.
2) Forensics would be able to tell if it was a murder or suicide.
3) Check the cops gun and bullets as well.
I just dont trust cops in the South. Where a black man can still get killed for looking at a white chick. And we all know how much white girls like black athletes.

It may have went down the way its stated and who’s to say the cop wasnt black. Let’s just pray for the fam and hope for the best although its a sad situation.

As we all know, this is not exclusive to the south. This type of thing goes on all over the U.S. Look at the police shootings that took place in New York. California is another place that has racist and corrupt police officers. Something needs to be done to command national attention when things like this happen.

I think one of the best things we as a community can do is not jump to conclusions. If this incident is a cover up, it will eventually come to light. But if it is not a cover up and the tail of events occurred how it was reported, then we should keep their family in our prayers and use this story as a lesson. I had a brother in law who committed suicide who had his bachelors degree, a great job, a new home and all the things that would make the average person say why would he do something like that to himself but he did because he was feeling pain on the inside. Too often in the black community especially black males suffer from depression and emotional distress and our community is under this impression that it cannot happen to our loved ones. This young man did have a bright future with a lot of success and accolades but he also probably experienced a great deal of pressure all around. I truly hope this isn’t a cover up ordeal but if it is we as a community should use his story as a example and start paying attention to our loved ones and the signs they may be providing us.

By the way MSNBC covered this story and the family said their was only a small gun shot entry behind his left ear(no other damage). His father stated that his son only used buckshots in his shotgun and if the bullet that killed him came from his shotgun the damage would have been greater.
Almost the same thing happeded in my family. The kid was an awesome athelet. It seemed he had everything going for him even scouted by NFL. He commited sucide. He seemed completely normal nothing changed about him no signs. My heart broke I wanted answers! Got none! He had to be dealing with some deep issues. My prayers are with this family right now and forever. The Lord will see them through. Whats is done in the dark will come to the light
On the real, I’m glad the family is investigating, but our community has turned a blind eye to suicide for far too long. The Hip Hop Mental Health Coalition and others are working to remove the stigma from depression and other mental health issues our people do experience.
It may be the case that this gifted young man was murdered by racist cops, and I am glad the family has the courage to call for an investigation and retain legal counsel. My prayers are with them.

I’m from MS and it’s not hard to jump to the conclusion that this was a racially motivated murder not suicide but the facts are just sketchy either way. I have no doubt that it is a possibility that he did kill himself but how would the officer have not seen the gun and known something wasn’t right, he just hears a shot from his car looks up and the young man is on the ground OUTSIDE the truck with a gun on his chest. One thing I do know being from Tha Sip is getting out the car is a NO NO so how would that happen. His brother said he often went hunting before going to school so that explains the shotgun, I think there was some sort of exchange that led to a fatal end. I know there is more to the story and I just hope the family gets the closure they need and deserve.

let me explain the difference between RACIST & Prejudice. Black people can be prejudice but not racist. Why? Simple black people do not have the power to be racist, we can dislike white people because they are white and that is prejudice. But black people cannot use their prejudice to influence and change the lives of white people we do not have control over where the live, go to school, work, or go to jail. Black people cannot institute a policy like racial profiling. Now until America faces it’s racist past and present these problems cannot be solved. But there are thousands no millions of stories about black men being killed by the police for dating a white girl, I have 3 myself and I live in California. Mississippi has a history of these types of murders so it is understandable why people would come to that conclusion or speculate about that scenario. Black people cannot end racism, we can only combat it, white people have to address their role in this racist country, stop saying they have nothing to do with it and they are not racist, but allow racist acts to continue, turn away, and cover this ***** up.

Hey all..first time poster here on Bossip. You know, something concerns me. I’m a black police officer and it really angers me that there is so much hate towards police officers on this board. Yes, there are bad apples out there, but that does not make ALL officers out there crooked, on the take etc.
This is a sad case no doubt about it..but let me ask all of you this and maybe you all can help me because I’m new to the bossip site. When those two brothers made a fake call and had two police officers come to an apartment and shot them up, was there a story here on the site? Where there as many posts?
Again, this is a tragic story, but there are black men getting killed EVERY DAY and not by cops, but by other BLACK MEN over the most mundane of things. I’d like bossip to also cover some of these other tragedies and see if there would be as many comments.

Ive been following this story and I tell you, something smells fishy about this story.(the officer’s story is just too surreal) I am interested in seeing the dash cam.
I find the death of this young man unbelievable. With all he had going for him there is no way he committed suicide.
They killed him plain and simple.

Wow! This doesn’t surprise me though. In the south black guys have gotten very ‘comfortable’ with white girls and the white girls love the brothers. The only problem with this is-unless you date the white trash—the girl’s family usually strongly disapprove of this. In smaller towns the clan has infiltrated the justice system, so they can get away with a lot. Please go a little more into details on this matter, since you live there and I know everyone is interested in this. What type of guy was he? What type of girl was she? Just some of the things that are related to this story.
This is a tragic story and something is definitely wrong with the scenario the officer put down. Allegedly there was just an entry wound behind his left ear. No other wounds. Now I don’t know about all of that…a right handed person…with a shot gun…and just one wound behind his left ear?
Now they are trying to pin a burglary on him. They allege that he and two other people broke into his ex girlfriend’s house that morning and that is why the cop pulled him over because they ran his plates… Two different stories… Something fishy. It started with him running a stop sign and a redlight…now all of a suddent it’s he was a suspect in a burglary…
I’d like to end with this… For you all who are afraid of living down south…There really is nothing to fear. Because cop killings happen in every region… Get your minds right. It is definitely not a southern thing. From what I hear, the racism up north is much worse anyway and coming at you from every angle. Down here we only have to worry about the regular (anglo saxon) white people. Italians, Jews, and other ethnic whites get along fine with Black people down south. Up north, you have them all coming at you…

Where are you all getting “The boy was troubled” “he committed suicide” information from? You read the same articles that we read unless you have personal information.
The report said “an apparent suicide”. Which is always the case before an investigation where a gun is found with a person on the scene.
Before you run in here calling people “ignorant *****s” and the like, you really should think about your own ignorance. You don’t know what was going on in this young man’s life. Nor do we. You take you make your judgments based on your perception…as do we. Perception is created through experience. Maybe your experience is that of dealing with people with mental health issues so you automatically *****ume that’s what it is when you read what was reported. The rest of us have experience of dealing with racist cops and black bodies piling up. Doesn’t make anyone ignorant or weed smoking *****s.

This guy was MURDERED by the cops! If anyone has been following the story, would clearly see that they are covering up something that went wrong, and tried to pin it as a suicide. Lawrence released an incident report and dispatch log related to a possible break-in that same morning by Johnson at the home of his ex-girlfriend.
Lucedale Police Department officers responded to the break-in call at 5:40 a.m.
The female, who is a minor, said Johnson had tried to break into the house through the front door. She told police he then tapped on her bedroom window, according to the report filed by Sgt. James O’Neal.
The girl told authorities Johnson returned to his vehicle and drove away just before they arrived. The girl told the officers she wanted to file charges against Johnson, according to the report.
While the officers were escorting the girl and her mother, Esther L. Parker, to the police department, they got a call about a traffic stop involving a sheriff’s deputy and gunfire, the report said.
O’Neal wrote in the report that when he and his partner, Officer Stuart Fairchild, arrived on the scene they saw Johnson “lying on his back, his head away from the truck. The shotgun was lying on his body with the barrel pointing in the direction of his head.”
How in heaven will anybody shot himself/herself with a shotgun especially in the chest. This story is foul as the white folks in Mississippi. There is no way. The cop/cops shot this young man and they need to burn in hell. This kind of abuse has to stop. I am originally from Lucedale. I know for a fact that he would most definitely NOT kill himself. The cops involved were known to be dirty cops and I hope they get whats coming to them. I live in Biloxi MS which is not to far from Lucedale where he lived. My brother is also a high school football star so i’ve had to opportunity to see this young play. He was phenomenal and had a bright future ahead of him. When I saw on the news what happened it broke my heart. I have a hard time believing it was an accident or suicide. I guess because I know how racist it is here on the MS gulf coast. Just a few years ago here in our county jail a man was beaten to death by police officers and it was covered up by the chief of police and staff. They look out for each other. I hope if he did this that he goes to real jail not isolation just as you or I would have. God bless his family my prayers are with you.

The news here is flaky and I have to say that his family has said he was an advid hunter who hunted before he went to school often. My question to the police is that WHEN DOES A COP ALLOW A PERSON THEY STOPPED TO STEP OUT OF THEIR CAR WHILE THEY ARE GOING TO CHECK HIS LICENSE? PLUS IF THE COP’S CAR WAS RIGHT BEHIND THIS YOUNG MAN’S CAR THEN WOULDN’T THE COP HAD HEARD HIM OPEN UP THE DOOR? The cop’s story sounds fishy to me. It doesn’t add up. I hope that this story stays in the news and the light of the media shines on the investigation. In this case, I don’t think the cops can be trusted to investigate their own.
This young man did not kill himself.. The history goes back to rascism and a father hating his daughter dating a black man. The father forced his daughter to call the young man to his home. After knocking on the door for 15 minutes he left angry. The police stopped him on the highway… a witness exist who saw and heard the shot. The 2 officers names are not being released… interesting. Lucedale MS will not investigate??? The football coach was called to identify the body?? Refused to let the parents see the body??? They will be prosecuted and God will see to this.
Public records released Friday at the Sun Herald’s request indicate a girl — identified by friends as Johnson’s girlfriend — called her mother to say someone was trying to get inside the home. A police report shows the mother called police and the girl saw Johnson’s truck driving away. Minutes later a deputy conducting a traffic stop 2.1 miles away called for *****istance at the scene of a shooting.
Johnson was found lying outside his purple Chevy Z71 pickup with a shotgun across his chest.
Family and friends have said he apparently had a relative’s gun, a 12-guage shotgun, in his pickup. They maintain he would not have shot himself on purpose.

People do kill themselves. But the cir*****stances of this case do not seem to add up. Especially the fact that he was dating a white girl, underage or not. Given the history of the South, this should make any rational person question the cops story. And I haven’t heard anyone say that he seemed to be troubled before the traffic stop. Maybe it did happen like that, but to me it just doesn’t sound likely.
I do think that black people sometimes go overboard due to history. They come to the defense of other black people who don’t deserve defending (e.j. O.J.) but this is a case that deserves greater scrutiny.

It amazes me at how angry we become over a story such as this, yet we allow drive-bys to continue in our neighborhoods daily because we fear being labled as a “snitch”. I wonder if any of you had witnesed any wrong doing in this case would you have spoken up. This young man lost his life and future, his parents lost their child. First, when did they start letting people get out of cars while they are getting a ticket or getting their plates ran? You mean to tell me that the police officer didnt see him get out of the car? I am actually an attorney, and we work off of evidence. EVIDENCE. Not one person’s word. Ballistics can determine where the shot came from…THOSE reports haven’t been released. I’m not in law enforcement and I know that a 12 gauge shotgun has a kickback and doesn’t land neatly on a person’s chest if they shoot themselves.

I lived in MS, and the gulf coast of MS looks better than the big cities. We have beautiful beaches and high rise apartments. This could have happened anywhere. I live in ATL and the polices are killing young black boys just like MS. If they aren’t killing them, they are kicking them out of school or locking them up. If a white male does the same crime, he will get 1-3 days suspension and no publicity. It is a serious problem. It is very sad that our community overlooks this problem. Our black males are becoming extinct. Without black males, our races will not thrive. I believe the police actually killed this young male like they do over the entire country! This is not a southern thing. It is a national thing. Unless we provide programs for our black youth instead of worrying about what kind of car we drive, what kind of house we live in, or the way we look and talk (selfish African-Americans), than our race would be extinct in the next 20 years and this will continue happening to us!

Here you took the words “apparent suicide” and became judge, juror and executioner of the truth. Labeling this young man “troubled” when you don’t know if he was struck by accident, on purpose, or the victim of police brutality. Yet you want to call him troubled? GTFOH!
3. You don’t know this young person, I don’t know this young person. You don’t know the officer, I don’t know the officer. You don’t know what happened at the “routine traffic stop”, I don’t know what happened at the “routine traffic stop”. You’re speculating, as we all are.
4. All we know is: a young black man is dead. And there were at least two guns there. The 12 gauge shot gun, he had. And the officer’s gun. When you find out which one shot him, let me know…
If it was just a traffic stop and the car was not stolen, why would he hasten a so called suicide? There would have been no need for incarceration to disrupt his intentions and there was no concern for paying the traffic fine later. There seems to be no need for him to kill himself at that moment.
Do star college-bound athletes normally carry guns in Mississippi? Do footballers normally kill themselves on Monday Night Football nights? Ok maybe those two questions are not so relevant, but can any of his friends verify the shotgun was his? *****ody has a gun that they have not shown to at least a best friend. Besides, for anyone with minimal knowledge of firearms, a shotgun doesn’t normally leave small entry wounds. Shotguns at close range normally remove body parts altogether.
This does not add up so effortlessly, but then again you never know what lurks in the hearts and minds of some people today. For one thing, how much data does a Black man require to understand that being out in the wee hours of the morning in any city, let alone a Southern city, is immediate exposure to the kill zone?

It’s sad but yet true, I am raising a young black male and we experienced a situation here in Florida where the police just openly har*****ed me and my son. Without going into detail he basically saw my son alone at first and did not know I was with him. So Black America we have to stand up and be ready for what this world is going to TRY and attack us with. But if GOD is for us who can be against us!!!!!!!!!!

See I wasn’t even going to address this issue, but here we go! I live in Mississippi and I was once a certified police officer before I burned out and wanted to do something waaaaaaay different. Now let us understand..Hatred is everywhere..not just in Mississippi! Remember, even though our family fled NORTH, does not mean they escaped people that disliked them for the Color of their skin. There are racist people North, South, East and West so be very careful pointing your finger down south..remember you have 3 more pointing right back at cha. Now this young man WAS the star of this small town in Mississippi, but no one person knows exactly what was on his mind. Our youth are so caught up in emotions and so many different things that we as adults fail to notice the warning signs. Let’s move away from…”Yea” their young..they will get over it”..HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT EXACTLY? Hurting is apart of life, but it’s a bad part of life when you feel you do not have someone to share your problems with! This young man could have been surrounded by hundreds of people each day, but could have still been a lonely SOUL! Let me leave this with you…the evidence will speak for itself..his soul is now in Gods hands. Let us Pray for his family and those that new his darkest secret and pray that they get shaken up enough to come forward and tell the truth!…God Bless!

This is so suspect. Come on people lets be honest. No cop black or white takes there eye off of a young black man during a “routine” stop. And he supposedly shot himself with a gunshot. Yeah right. Come on!! My thoughts and prayers goes out to the family. BUT PLEASE KEEP INVESTIGATING.
