Evander Holyfield is lucky to walk away with that brick head of his still on his shoulders:

Nikolai Valuev likely ended Evander Holyfield’s last chance at winning a fifth heavyweight title, narrowly defending his WBA title by majority decision on Saturday night.

The 46-year-old American, attempting to become the oldest heavyweight to win a major belt, started the fight by moving around the ring to neutralize Valuev’s long reach advantage.

The 7-foot Russian, the tallest and heaviest champion ever, struggled to close down Holyfield early but began asserting his jab as Holyfield tired.

One judged scored the bout a draw, while the others had Valuev winning 116-112 and 115-114.

“Of course I am disappointed,” Holyfield said. “I thought I had done enough to get the win. Now I have to go home and think about my future.”

Holyfield (42-10-2) had not fought since losing a one-sided decision to then-WBO champion Sultan Ibragimov over a year ago, and was much criticized for this latest comeback attempt. Some critics suggested he was putting his health at risk by fighting at such an advanced age.

Man, that big ass Russian monster is 7 feet tall and 328 pounds and no man at 46 years old needs to be fighting a man that size. SMH @ Evander trying to get his last stacks at the expense of being able to walk and talk.

All of a sudden Russian boxers are the biggest, fastest heavyweights in the world. I suspect drug related breeding of these monsters. Evander, it is time to sit your ass down!

  • Davina

Second!!! Russians athletes are very far for beeing clean…. I watched the fight it was disappointing.

Now you know they wasnt going to have this FRAKENSTEIN made man lose to a natural black man. Holyfield is 46 and he proved his point whether the judges were unfavorable or not.

  • Shante’

Evander has to keep fighting until he is in a wheel chair. He has about 10 children and several baby mothers who stay on his ass for that child support.

  • carl

If you watched the fight you would of known that he got robbed on the decision.

  • b’more

the russian can’t be all that if he “narrowly” defended his title, and “struggled” to close down Holyfield. apparently Holyfield still got it in him.

  • Jason B. Real

Holyfield looks like he is challenging the Incredible Hulk.

Redactor of this article, haven’t watch this fight!! I’m 100% sure

This fight was EVERYTHING that was wrong with pro-boxing:

A)The sport does’nt attract the best athletes.Evidenced by the fact that Holyfield was even considered for a TITLE FIGHT.Further evidenced by the fact that this Valuev clown gave Holyfield the fight to AVOID having to face someone who could beat him…AND HE STILL LOOKED LIKE CRAP.Holyfield probably should’ve won.

B)The sport is-and has always been-top to bottom CORRUPT.That includes the three blind mice who judged this fight. It was somewhat tolerable when the sport held center stage & had a larger talent pool of “names” that even the casual fans knew.Nowadays it just magnifies the PATHETIC state of the sport.

C)A full generation of people between the ages of 18 and 40 y.o. have grown up watching MIXED MARTIAL ARTS.The UFC is more interesting to watch…has a DEEP pool of talent…attracts the best athletes…does’nt allow fighters to duck tough fights…markets itself better…and is better run as a sport.

I don’t hate boxing…but I would much rather watch MMA.If you can’t be in ‘Vegas next weekend…buy the DECEMBER 27th PAY PER VIEW OF UFC 92.Watch what great athletes do in the premiere combat sport. You will be thoroughly entertained.

    @Dr. Funk

I agree with you regarding the marketing of MMA and that it is more interesting to watch, but Dana White and the few other organizations aren’t paying MMA fighters what they’re worth. The very top fighters (i.e. Oscar DeLahoya and Money Mayweather now RETIRED **but will come back to fight Pacquio) in boxing are getting paid in upward of 20 and 30 million a fight. Other top fighters such as Pacquaio, Hopkins, Hatton, Cotto, and even still Roy Jones Junior are still making between 5 and 10 million a fight.

That is due to the amount of money that boxing generates. The top fighters within MMA have salaries of only around $500,000 tops to look forward to for a fight. And that is only for the very top MMA athletes. The average MMA fighter only makes between $2000 and $5000 a fight. I’m not sure how viable the sport will remain if MMA fighters continue to get short changed.

I agree with most of your points, however. Boxing is very corrupt, but if you are very good then the compensation is about a 1000 fold times more lucrative than the MMA game. Boxing is not going anywhere, and it should not be compared to MMA. My grandfather was a boxing fan, my father was a boxing fan and I am a boxing fan because of it. It’s a cultural thing that will not die, because of the inception of MMA.

I have trained MMA over in Japan at P’s Lab with the Pancrase organization and have trained here in the States with High Altitude Martial Arts (UFC Fighter and 5 time King of Pancrase Nathan Marquadt’s Gym). My point is that no matter how much I love or am involved in MMA, my passion for boxing will never diminish and I will always fork over the PPV cash for an intriguing boxing match, which is why boxers are able to be compensated appropriately.

And yes, I will buy UFC 92, because that card is the sh*t. Reminds me of the old Japan Pride cards with Wandy and Rampage going at it, not to mention NOG!

  • jonito

Holyfield got robbed. He actually won the fight.

  • dismymoney

A guy, a few months back told me about these Russian fighters and made me go to YouTube to watch this guy and a few others fight. I don’t know if they are clean or not, but they are frightening.

  • Dizzy McElroy

    Too bizarre.
