What was this guy thinking?:

A Normandy substitute teacher has been charged with unlawful use of a weapon after allegedly threatening a middle school student with a knife.

Stanley Covington, 64, a math teacher, is accused of placing a knife against the chest of a student and threatening to stab him, Normandy Police Chief Frank Mininni said.

Covington was charged Thursday. His was being held in lieu of $10,000 bail.

Police received a call at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday about a disturbance at Normandy Middle School, Mininni said. Covington told them that someone in the classroom had thrown a calculator that hit him in the head. Covington then left the classroom to get a security guard and when he returned, one of the students had gotten into a bag he carries and pulled out a knife that he uses at his second job at the Galleria and placed it on his desk to intimidate him.

Mininni said the students had a different account of what happened.

They said that Covington pulled the knife from his bag, placed it against the chest of a student, and told the student he was going to cut him.

Mininni said the incident happened in the morning and police did not learn about it from security until later. He said police should have been called right away and he plans to investigate why they weren’t.
