One point I should mention though. Although it is true that there may be a disconnection in our community, the OVERWHELMING number of black people still mate and settle down with OTHER BLACK people.

I understand what you are saying. I just want you to consider something. In America, class and race are very intertwined. Racism is used to strengthen the class based system. Some black women feel that you can speak of class without race, but you cant.
Morally, classism is no different than racism. Either you believe that God created human beings equally or you don’t. I know you stated that you studied economics. I wonder if you read much history. Read about how the Irish were treated when they came to America. Understand how they then “became” white. Hence they increased their class value by not being black, like you, me and messence, so that the racist system could continue being perpetuated.
In this culture, people see white as a greater value than black, the same way you see white collar as greater than blue collar. Fact. If a successful black man has a choice between 2 10’s, one black and one white and he chooses the white one, he is no different than you. He is subject to the same racist/classist programming as everyone else. It’s as much his choice as it’s yours.
Finally, you spoke about the beloved trash man. Question. What if our trash man enjoyed reading history, economics and philosophy in his spare time and he invested his earnings in the stock market? Would you still refuse to date him because he wasn’t in your “social set”? It always makes my skin crawl to hear black people talk about someone isn’t on their social level. I can’t help but think about poor Oprah and Hermes and contrast that to how people treat Britney, Paris and Lindsey.

Well, when I said “social set” I meant circle of friends, network, acquaintances. The man down the hall in your building, the guy sitting next to you in your class, the person your friend set you up with. That’s typically how I meet men, by referral or proximity. The man I’m with now is someone that I met at a function, and even though he’s foreign, we were still able to play six degrees of seperation and find mutual acquaintances in common. I’m not saying that is isn’t classist, cause on some level, it is, but I do believe, that typically, that’s how people meet and get together. People are far more likely to be with someone that runs in their crowd than someone who doesn’t. You know, birds of a feather? I would be more likely to date that trash collector, you’re referring to, if he was either referred to me by a friend/acquaintance or if we were in the same philosophers book club or investor’s club, then if he was to holla at me on the street or try to pick me up at a bar.

No, that’s racist, not classist, chosing the white girl over the black one because she’s white. I understand your POV, but I don’t totally agree. While I think that whites can be blamed for most racism and colorism, classism is not an invention of Europeans and existed among people of color long before the slave trade. Maybe that’s why I’m able to make the distinction. In this day and age, racism/classism is kind of a gray area. Yes, there is institutionalized racism that directly correlates with income and economic status, but at the same time, we live in a somewhat fluid meritocracy, where if you want the education and the opportunities to better yourself,they’re out there,if you want them badly enough. The saying goes, “content of character not color of skin,” so it’s not always about bank account. If a professional black woman snubbed a blue collar black man, maybe it’s because she sees his being blue collar as a character flaw. “Hey, we’re from the same bad neighborhood, and yet I kept my nose in the books and got where I am today, why didn’t you? Did you not study as hard or want it badly enough?”
OK, true story, I have this friend, and he once dated a white girl. Now he’s West Indian and comes from a well to do family of PHD’s. Though she was attractive, this white girl he brought home didn’t have a degree,connections, or any type of recognizable ambition other than to try to get in where she fit in. Now, his mother staired right through that woman and found it utterly disrepectful that he would dare bring her home to meet his parents,as if she were supposed to get a pass on her short comings because she was white. Now, you’re thinking that’s racist, but his sister is married to a white man, albeit one with a law degree. Whether or not his mother would have been more accepting had the woman their son brought home been black is debatable, but for the time I’ve been friends with this gentleman, he’s never been with a black woman that didn’t have credentials that his family would be proud of. BTW, he eventually married a black woman that his parents set him up with.
And I’m thinking that whole Oprah Hermes thing was blown out of proportion. Wasn’t the store closed?
