What ever happened to planning a wedding before planning for a baby?

I mean they’ve been togther for a while and are in a committed relationship and if they’re happy then fine, but this happens all the time with NBA and NFL players, they’ll have a black college girlfriend or hometown girlfriend for a while and maybe have a kid or two but when it comes time for marriage they’ll settle down with a white/spanish trophy ho. Perfect example Kobe Bryant. He had a black longtime girlfriend back home, but when it came time to get serious he married a Mexican high school kid. I’m just sayinga as black women we need to start thinking smarter, and have higher expectations than being a baby’s momma or girlfriend.

@Tiray, no I’m not projecting that Chris Paul will take the same path as Kobe. However it’s a fact that over 70% of African American children are born to single parent households, I’m aware that doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t have a father in their life but it’s still not a favorable statistic. It’s also a fact that the majority of black women will never get married in their lifetime. Whereas most white women will get married at some point during their lives.

I’m not passing judgment on Chris Paul and his girlfriend, it’s a free country, and I understand marriage isn’t for everyone, but I also get tired of reading angry rants from women who will complain that black men will run around and get a woman pregnant but won’t commit. So much talk about what these adults want or dont want or what is good for them. Has anyone at all thought about what is best for the children? I mean has anyone made any decisions on their behalf?

Why not just tell black children not to go to school at all because an education doesnt gaurantee anything at all. The fact is, nothing in life is gauranteed but you increase your chances of success with an education. Likewise you increase your chances of well adjusted children when you raise them in a traditional family structure.

So if marriage is too much of a commitment, so are babies.

Firstly, it’s guarantee. Secondly, the analogy you have given is complete nonsense. An education may not guarantee success, but it certainly increases your probabilty of success. On the other hand two parents who love, pay attention and communicate with their children increases the probability of children who are well adjusted, not marriage. You can be married and even pretend like the marriage is OK and children will smell that farce a mile away and ultimately the marriage does not increase the chances of a successful outcome for that child! Whereas if at least a civil relationship (as far as how the parents relate) between two parents is present, whether they live together or not, and more importantly the child is loved, given attention and discipline by both parents, that child in all likelihood will be fine. Marriage does not need to enter the equation and the institution itself does not increase the chances of well adjusted children.

The situation you describe is one of no good black men who were chosen by black women to father their children! Please, the “shacking up and having a baby” rate is much worst than the marraige rate. Marriage still means something even though people try to pretend like it doesn’t. Harsh but true. Reading some of these comments just makes me sad. Instead of wanting to do better, we are now starting to justify poor decisions. As a people, I feel as if we are approaching insanity.

OK, I just have to add how I really find little to no logic in the thinking that it’s easier, or more desirable, to plan a pregnancy than a wedding.

If you marry a person, you do have the option of divorcing that person should the marriage fail. Yes, it may cost a high amount of time and money, but, the point is, you can get out of it.

Once you have a child, that’s a life-long commitment (not to mention time-consuming and expensive). It seems to be a tragic irony that we have people who think creating a baby is somehow less challenging or costly than finding a husband/wife first.

I guess I’m saying I just can’t fathom anyone in their right mind saying we intentionally planned a pregnancy and marriage, well, that’s on the back burner, or in the “near future.” If you have time to plan a baby, do you not have time to at least plan a quick trip to the Justice of the Peace?

To take it a step further, if you think a man/woman is worthy of parenting your child (which, as I mentioned, is a life-long commitment and an immense responsibility), why would you not think of that person as a husband/wife first? Or is the problem that a number of us don’t think in those terms?

I live in LA and I will tell you that the only black women with any decent measure of a black man out here are already married. The overwhelming majority of black males in Los Angeles are SEVERELY DAMAGED. Like, unbelievably so. I was shocked and dismayed at the news you guys put out that Chris Paul’s pregnancy with his girlfriend was planned. That is complete BULLISH! First of all Chris has not been with Jada since college, he dumped her when he first got into the league to date other women and just got back with her this past year. Second, the pregnancy was not planned because he wasn’t so happy about it at first but he eventually warmed up to it. Third, his entire family can’t stand her ass! Have you ever seen a Hornets game where she sits next to his family? No, there is a reason for that. His family usually sits courtside while she sits higher up all by her lonesome. His mother cannot stand her, she does not even speak to her. All of this is hoopla has been put out by Jada and her new bff Kim Kardashian because she has such low self-esteem. Notice how Jada cut her bangs to look like Kim’s? Honestly I am sick of her playing her little games; and I for sure know that his entire family is also. She was supposed to be on birth control, that’s why so many people, including Chris, were shocked to find out that she was pregnant. But then again, she “missed” a couple of days. What a coincidence that once he gets back with her, he becomes a mega star and not one month after he signs a $68 million contract extension, she gets pregnant. No this girl knows what she is doing and is ensuring her future along with her parents’ retirement from the carpet cleaning business. Well I believe the pregnancy was planned but by both of them together? Possible but I find it hard to believe. Only because she stands to benefit more from this than he does. She will be set for life marriage or not he’ll lose a significant portion of his income. For me its not a religious thing but a commitment issue. You can commit to bring a life into the world together which is a lifetime commitment by the way but you can’t commit to spending the rest of your life with the person? Whether you are married or not that kid will be what connects you to that other person for the rest of your life. These things should not be entered into lightly and its disappointing that it is.

Even though Kobe married outside his race and folks seem to hate that for some reason even he waited till he was married to have kids which is a rarity.

As a close friend of the Paul family, I can confirm that, contrary to popular belief, this was NOT a planned pregnancy. While Chris is looking forward to being a father, he is not happy with the way these events have taken place.

Congrats to him… Next time he needs to use protection regards if she said or he thought she was on birth control.

Now divide his salary per year by 12, then multiple that number by 21%. Whatever number you got at the end of those two simple mathematics problems, that would be the check sent to the mother of his child each mother (not including whatever other expenses the he maybe ordered to pay) if she was to ever put him on child support (as most would call it adult support).
