It’s all about a BEAT now instead of actual talent, if you dont have the right beat added to some stupid words then it dont work. Soulja Boy proved that for HIP HOP and Rihanna proved it for Pop/Rock and R&B. We are in an era of non talent coming out and being sucessful. Where as before it was the other way around. Rihanna, Soulja Boy and some others would have been laughed out of this business if we were back in the day when music was music simply just by opening your mouth and carrying a tune, harmonizing, and knowing how to put it all together, you know like something what Beyonce, Mary J., Jill Scott, and a lot of the male singers does. The names mentioned are just a few I thought of off the top of my head.. But in real the quality of the singer/rapping has been going down for awhile now because we have allowed a look and a beat to get through…

Diana Ross, Patti LaBelle was just about the uglyest things in Music but had the baddest voices. We need to stop looking and start listening to our artist..

Hip hop isnt dead, its just sleeping, heavily, in a coma like state. The problem is that hip hop lacks true stars, visionaries. People that are able to push the artform to the next level. The market is over saturated. Too many people have their opinions of what “real hip hop” is. But when you label certain styles as real, or bubble gum or pop, you limit the growth of the music and in affect kill the new growth.

It’s very annoying to have someone tell you that the definition of a true hip hop fan is someone who likes conscious rappers.

Hip Hop embodies so much more than rappers reciting what they learned from books and complaining about the government, etc.

I love Zion I, Slum Village, KO’s, Blackalicious, etc, etc, but that’s not all I love. I can appreciate all aspects of rap.

It’s hard to get down with Soulja boy and his counterparts, but I’m not going to point fingers at someone who loves him and tell them, “they are not true hip-hop fans.” That’s ridiculous and unfair.

And for the record, hip hop is not dead. There are MANY rappers with real lyrical talent hoping to make it big.

The market is saturated with “pop” and “pop-rappers.” The rappers that you all are looking for are just being ignored because pop music is selling, and they arent.

Try to market Young Berg in 1995. Labels would never accept him…why? Because that kind of rap wasn’t important at the time.

Corporate America killed Hip Hop point blank. Over the last decade or so, big corporations like Viacom and Radio One had figured out that exploiting gangsterified stereotypes in rap music are its main selling points. This is the reason why every single rapper that gets any spins on the radio or on TV is a fitted baseball cap wearing self-professed drug dealer MC. Even if you are a talented rapper with a positive message, it would be damn near impossible to get your record any airplay on a national level. If you want any exposure at all you better put on some blackface and start rapping about nothing but meaningless sex, guns and cocaine. Prosperity in hip hop is also a reason for its demise. Rappers don’t make music for the love
of the music anymore, but more for the love of money. Rappers will prostitute themselves to the white mainstream so they can live lavish lifestyles.

I never said that to be a true hip hop fan you have to only like conscious rap that was an *****uption on your part. However I do believe the essence of hip hop whether it be conscious, party, gangster or what for, is to connect with your audience through your words and have something of value to say and again I reiterate to make sense.

Having to say “huh what did he say” and not understanding what a song is about because the rapper has a very all over the place-out-of-focus rap style is unacceptable. Plus, lupe does not only rap about consious things, but people would know that if they bought his album and cared to take a listen and not just devote themselves to whoever a radio DJ or another popular rapper big ups.

We have to face the fact that the music industry is driven by the record buying public. That would be the 106&park watching demographic (i.e. 10-18yr olds who should be memorizing times tables) but I digress. Lupe’s The Cool was an excellent cd. If people even took the time to listen to lyrics anymore instead of suc*****bing to the hook driven propaganda then they would know that even in Lupe’s “main stream” Superstar there was something being said. Those of us who think that Hip-Hop as we knew it is coming to an end then put your dollars where your values are. That is what these execs understand, and as long as we are paying those who are shuckin’ & jivin’ then that is what we’re going to get.

I vowed I was going to stop responding in here but I can’t help myself on this one. Hip Hop has been on it’s deathbed for quite awhile in case anyone has not noticed. Hip Hop has outlasted all of the pundits who used to say it would not last however the flat line is close. Hip Hop used to be fun, mc’s battled and above all else the thing that carried hip hops early beginning’s was the message and I am not talking about just Grandmaster Flashes either. It went from new and funny to esoteric messages and then crashed into misogyny and useless prin*****ls. You would need a computer to calculate how many artist have based their hip hop artistry on gangs, strip clubs, drug dealing and usage etc. It is true that hip hop has hit a fork in the road. Some rap artist claim they do not even listen to hip hop and the strangest thing is i believe them. Hip hop needs to a find another direction and soon before it goes the the way of the dinosaur in some ways. Hip hop will never truly die however it seems the apex has been reached.

The form of rap may have changed but it’s definitely the same material. The people who are not fans of rap should consider that they might just have outgrown it. I can recall countless songs that are talking about the exact same things they’re saying today. What I think is the problem is coming from the northern crowd who dislike southern rappers period. Rappers weren’t making as much money in the 90’s, so maybe that explains why they rap about bling. Anyway, stop trying to dissect the lyrics of teenagers and go watch CNN.

Jay-Z – Although i dont listen to him as much as I used to.

Of course the wanna be alternative rock singer, can’t understand what he’s rhyming about Lupe Fiasco would say Hip Hop is dead. 1st. What did Lupe contribute to Hip Hop, nothing. His 1st album is not a cl*****ic he had probably 3 good songs and the 2nd was total garbage. He was more hype than actually a good artist. He’s a frustrated artist. To me, all Lupe is is one big poser. He’s extremely inconsistent from his look to his music. LUPE STEP YOUR GAME UP! Hip hop is not dead. It lives in the underground music scene. There are artist like Edan, MF Doom, PB Wolf, and Lyrics Born that go on small world tours and are AMAZING! The majority of people who support the likes of soulja boy, jim jones, juelz santana, to name a few have already made up their minds that THAT is what hip hop his. Unless people do their own research, and really listen to Words current rap artist are saying, the real essence of hip hop will remain in the dark…underground.

Hey Lupe has a valid point….I’m an old hip hop head and the new young rappers really don’t have half the talent like the old school rappers had.Examples, when L.L came out he was like 16yrs old….But he knew how to rap and still does. Old school rappers who knew how to rap and were young(Ilegal Shyhiem,Slick Rick,Doug, E Fresh,Special ED, Rakim,Beastie Boys,Big daddy kane, Kool G Rap,Heavy D, Ed OG and the Bulldogs, Red Head Kingpin anyway I could go on and on.Most of these MC’s were under the age of 21 when they released their first record. The point is the industry needs to stop letting everyone release a rap record cuz everyone can’t rap. Most of these new cats could’nt move a crowd if their life depended on it! So the excuse can’t be that they r young it’s because they don’t know how to rap….Hey Even Bow Bow was decent when he came out…..There is no reason why Soulja boy should get more airplay than Lupe…WTF!! Hip Hop was birthed as the face and voice of urban expression. Positive and negative views. Even NWA when they first came out had politically charged lyrics expressing hardships of the urban youth. In Africa, drums were the way to communicate important messages to a people over miles. When this form of communication began to be used for less than important messages, it killed that culture. Just as these rambling children rap about any random BS. They are killing our method of communicating important messages to each other. The brother is so right. Listen to the radio airwaves, they play the same songs every hour never venturing outside of box to play some of the hottest hip-hop artists that are on the net. Instead they stay within the safety net of the Lil Waynes, T.I.’s etc. Their playlists are created by their corporate offices that own the record companies that own the artists.
