Fantasia’s House Auctioned Off Today!!

Fantasia Barrino is losing her million dollar home while this article is being written up about her, and reports are saying she is in denial:
CHARLOTTE, NC – Fantasia Barrino – who faces the loss of her $1.3 million home here in a debtor’s auction set for noon Monday – is apparently ignoring the looming legal threat, officials told The Post yesterday. The inspirational “American Idol” winner owes a Florida credit company $65,000 – money she borrowed in 2006 to pay back taxes she owed the IRS. The singer made a $10,000 payment in August 2007. But she never paid the rest, so the company won the right in court last month to auction off her house for the balance. Mecklenburg County sheriff’s deputies, who are responsible for enforcing civil court orders, have tried at least a dozen times to reach Barrino at the home and by phone, said Sgt. J.W. England, a supervisor of civil judgments. A deputy spoke a couple of times to Barrino’s mother, but never reached the star, who appears to be ignoring attempts to save her house, officials said. “We try very hard and give the defendant every opportunity to pay,” England said yesterday. Over the course of about a year, Barrino has never responded to court documents, and no lawyer ever appeared in court to represent her, said Larry Goldman, a Charlotte attorney representing the credit company, Broward Energy Management. “I certainly don’t want anyone to lose their house,” Goldman said. “But as far as I’m concerned, we have a judgment.” Barrino, 24, has made no payments and filed no documents since The Post reported a court-ordered lien on the property in Charlotte’s upscale Piper Glen neighborhood last month. Goldman said he never heard from Barrino’s representatives until after the judge’s order. He said he has since spoken twice with reps who haven’t offered to resolve the debt but said they’d get back in touch before next Monday. “My client has continuously asked me why they won’t just pay it,” Goldman said. “I just don’t have an answer.” Barrino’s attorney, Gary Greenberg declined to comment yesterday.
“It’s my practice not to talk about client matters,” he said. Barrino’s agent, Erin Culley, referred questions to the singer’s publicist but was unable to provide contact information for that person.

Charlotte, NC has quite a few affluent neighborhoods. The one where Tasia’s home is has MANY, MANY people whose earnings rate them from upper middle cl***** and beyond. (You’d really be surprised to know who some of her neighbors are!!)
Besides the fact that she has ANOTHER home, I have yet to see (foreclosures are public information) where her home is up for closure!
Now, it might be a slip of the eye on my part yet at the same time, I understood that it’s NOT the mortgage payments she’s behind on, it’s the property taxes!!
It would be nice if BOSSIP reported accurate information.
Besides–if she does lose this one, it’s not like she doesn’t have several more!
PLUS—if she has a sound tax preparer she can write it off as a loss!

Fantasia has made plenty of money between her music, Broadway and her life story movie she played in. She either bought more house than she could afford or squandered away the income she had. Either way, we have to accept responsibility for our own financial messes. We have too many examples of how easily money can come and go. A white person will take a million dollars, invest it somewhere sensible (like real estate, NOT cars which depreciate) and go sit they *****es down somewhere. Black people will have a car lot sitting in their driveway (all losing value) and 10 people mooching off them in the house.
Fantasia did right to buy the house, but then you have to make PAYING FOR IT your priority over everything else–even taking care of family. If you cannot take care of yourself and secure your future, you are no good to ANYONE. Fantasia has to take care of herself FIRST. After she is stable, then she can help out the fam.

About Fantasia, I don’t wish the loss of a home on anyone, but people really need to start living within their budgets. I am a fan of Fantasia’s music, but her career hasn’t solidified enough for her to make long term ridiculous decisions. You live and learn I guess. Anyhow, don’t buy an A-list home with a B-list budget. I wish her the best, but my truest sympathy goes out to the families who actually work really hard and still can’t make ends meet in an average house. She had enough money for a nice house under a million, but she had to have it.

To clear up the Fantasia house matter- The company is making threats to her and putting her on blast in order to make her pay. I doubt very much if they can take something of that value for such a small debt. Although it does depend on state laws. They can however enter a judgement against her, if and when she does sell any home in that state, they can then be first in line to collect. A good lawyer can handle this with no problem. She should slow down her spending during these tight times.

If someone has a lien on your house (which they have when you owe them, regardless of the reason), they can petition the courts to have that house sold to settle the debt. It is a process and takes a while, but what happens is the house is sold (usually by auction) and everyone/company with a lien on the house get their payments.
It is sometimes difficult to “find” houses that are on the auction blocks for these liens. Going to the auction might not provide more details either, since they will give you an address and not necessarily an owner’s name for the house.
I am sure these facts are correct and she probably owes someone on this house. Bossip wouldn’t print such false information (they could be sued).
You can loose your house for taxes or quite frankly a maintenance fee. Some gated communities have annual fees that you HAVE to pay to live in those communities, this is NOT your mortgage or taxes, but you can loose your house just the same. If someone does work on your house and you rfeuse to pay them, (regardless of the amount), they can place a lien against your house, based on the amount owed.
Again, this person would have to produce do*****ents to the court attesting to the fact that they are owed the money, have tried to collect the money and you are not paying them.

I luv Fantasia. Its sad she had to lose her house. When people become rich over night, they think they can just spend money 24/7. She should have started out small and worked her way up. I hope she is working on a new album.

You did mention something else important as well. You mentioned fees and/or *****ociation dues. A LOT of people do not realize when they purchase homes that there are sometimes additional fees and or homeowners *****ociation dues that go along with the purchase (depending on your home’s location). Before I purchased my first home, I actually took some cl*****es to familiarize myself with the process. Even then, I did not realzie that I had to pay *****ociation dues. It wasn’t until I got to the bank and was going over some things with the loan officers, lawyers, etc. It was a valuable lesson that I was well prepared for in purchasing my second home.
PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW THESE THINGS BECAUSE YOU MAY BE ON TIME WITH YOUR MORTGAGE PAYMENTS AND A LIEN CAN STILL BE PLACED ON YOUR HOME IF THE OTHER PAYMENTS ARE NOT CURRENT!!!!!

Believe it or not, in the (very) fine print of what you sign, those maintenance fees can increase without first notifying you. So you might sign up for a house with fees that are $400 when you move in and $2000 two years later. The homeowners’ *****ociation just have to show that the fees are reasonable in light of related expenses (e.g. more security is now needed, etc.).
You are correct though that when you buy a house you don’t factor those costs in.
The other thing people don’t realise is that stars get gigs and when those gigs end (concerts, broadway, etc.) they are basically unemployed until the next gig, so they have to be smart about how they spend their money.

It makes sense from the lender’s point of view, but not for the borrower to allow this to happen. Sometimes, when you take out loans, lenders require what is called “collateral” (basically something of value they can take from you if you do not repay the loan). Fantasia may have used her house as collateral, and when she did not repay the money, the lender had the right to take the property to get their money back. Some people are saying this is happening because of taxes. Let’s get this straight, too, even if your house is PAID IN FULL, you must still pay property taxes every year. Even if your tax bill is only $6000 per year on a $1 million dollar house, if you fail to pay the government the taxes due, they CAN and they DO take houses away. They usually try to get the money first, but generally speaking, the gov’t doesn’t play, and we already know this.
Regardless, to allow a property to be taken for that amount of money screams that she is broke. Period. There are few financial benefits to letting this happen — even if she can take it as a “loss.” The real “loss” is losing any equity she might have had in the house for a measily $60+K bill. The house probably had multiple mortgages and no equity.
