@sammy pretty:

shes not really following zoe’s style….zoe is more about 70’s high fashion (i.e. halston, pucci,) mixed with vintage jewelry and accessories…more like pucci tunics, vintage rings, big sunglasses, heels…or long dresses with similar accessories. I’d say that zoe’s style is more marykate olsen/kate moss…the grunge, heroin chic look

------------------------------------------------

No, I disagree...yeah Racheal's style was hippie chic when that was the most popular look and yes there is this decidedly period feel about her work, but it's whatever period is popular. And, by saying that, I mean to take nothing away from her, as I find her very creative, but her trick is manipulating our choices: she knows the trends, like the 70s thing you mentioned, she knows exactly which pieces of jewelry, which styles of bags, of outerwear, of shoes will be available to us and so she simply plays on that, combining them harum-scarum and putting the final product on celebs who we already afford this sort of supernatural otherness...and so her looks seems better because it is 1. celeb-worthy, we think and 2. because it IS different because of course no two people will choose exactly from a sea of possibilities.

But the point is, there's always this element of what's on trend with her, it's not just 70's chic or even 80's tortured artist...it's not a matter of introducing anything different, but only making something less familiar...

So, I said all that to say (AND SORRY SO LONG...too much coffee), she's not about any period (despite what she might say), she's only about trend...and the trend now is this sort of irreverent, androgynous dress and like all of Racheal Zoe's clones have done in the past, Zoe Kravitz seems to be a walking congregation of trendy pieces.

Eh, “individual” style is a myth. Everybody borrows ideas and inspiration from somewhere, even if the copying is subconscious and no one recognizes the sources.

of course I realize that...and I realize too that often we take our fashion inspiration from others out of unconscious intent BUT there's a degree of peculiarity in it all AND that is what makes somebody's style their own. For instance, Mary-Kate Olsen's "bobo" or "ashcan chic"...we'd seen rockers, for ages, pairing expensive designer jackets with jeans and grungy tees BUT Mary-Kate's interpretation of that, that playing with things diametrically opposed, is something completely different and yet the same (as you said)...

As I said, anybody with sighted eyes is bound to tend toward certain already established styles and ideas, but we do so, honestly, when we recognize a bit of ourselves or our own aspirations in those styles and ideas and in that way, there is a uniqueness about it.

So the point I was making initially was that so many celebs are buying into Rachael Zoe's sensibility that they're all beginning to look alike... And, I remember Zoe (Kravitz) wearing the same getups as Nicole Richie (who's "style" or "makeover" was Rachael Zoe's work)...they all look the same is all...it's lame...
