When did being a black person in this country become the definite defnition of what is blackness? Then Africans or West Indians “less black” than us? I’m black, but I’m not Black American (I’m African, but grew up in the states). I’ll speak for myself, though I think most of the women on here will agree. I believe myself to be colorblind. I don’t care if a black man dates an other. I’ve grown up like this as my family is very mixed and there are a lot of black men in my family that have married outside their race. I must say though that my beliefs have been thoroughly tested living here as these days every time i see a black man w/ an other my initial reaction is for my blood to boil. Why? Because what it FEELS LIKE is more so a rejection of the black women then the falling in love w/ your soulmate… who just happens to not be black. When it’s true love, who should care about skin color. I myself am not opposed to dating outside my race BUT… best believe I LOVE my black brothas. Just don’t get the feeling that some of these brothas generally feel the same. Self-hatred is a bitch.

More than anything I think it’s territorial. People (regardless of race) are territorial about what they believe to be theirs. As it relates to this conversation, the black woman deemed to be “hating” could be… single and desparate and what some consider unattractive or… in a relationship w/ the person of their dreams and beautiful by the standards of most. Just because a black woman is unapproving doesn’t mean she’s insecure.
It’s so crazy to me to see the hate that spewed between the men and women on this site. And yes, it does come from both sides but… at least when the women do it it’s coming from a place that shows their love of the black man. BUT damn, some of these men just want to rip us apart. Show some love, dammit! That’s what black women need… to be loved by their black men… to be built up by their black men. i think her quote was taken out of context. i think the second part of the quote was said later, and she may have been referring to the “whole package” as in a complete man. we women do, of course, look for a complete package in the men we want to marry.
I think they are a beautiful couple which should set the example for all of us to love a person just because we can. (But sometimes knowing that you’re gonna get your boots rocked off, ain’t such a bad deal either).

I was taught the same things in school too and for those of us who went to majority white schools it was almost like “What the hell are you doing here? now, in other parts of the world, its totally different. these issues are as prevelent in europe, and some parts of latin america [i say some parts because i've lived in argentina and chile and i've expereinced intra-racisim at some level].

The reason (most) black women don’t hate on this relationship is that Heidi seems genuinely nice, and a great catch. We know she’s not after Seal’s money, she has her own. She could have been with anyone, but is with him, and unlike a lot of the white females I see with brothers, she looks as if she will actually try to get along with black women, and not act like she is intolerable of every black person except for the black man she is with.
