there is something to say about staying together for the kids, but a heck of a lot to say for marrying before you make them. stop letting the t.v., videos, magazines and stuff convince you that we are better off with our children running around with fathers and mothers together, or at least both present. the likelihood of having two parents present in a child’s life, even if the adult relationship does not survive, is more likely when the parents actually were married. im not trying to moralize; but we have to stop acting like stuff that is wrong is right.

I agree that you don’t have to be married to commit to raising a child as a couple–however, for African-Americans, the decline in marriage has been detrimental. Research the statistics–for many AAs the consequence of not marrying first and having babies is a road to poverty and struggle, if not already there. Marriage raises socioeconomic status!

i cannot believe the no one thought soul plane was an important movie. it was about an operational black airline, and the plane got to and from its destination. blacks supported the venture in that most of the people on the plane were black. and they partied together. black education, black business, black economics, black employment, and black love. yeah there was some other stuff going on, but my list includes the most important notions I walked away with. the movie did not make me want to go out and get high. stop letting people make up apologize about how we like to have fun, or make us forget the good that we do. these are the same folks that have some of us hiding under the table so white folks can’t see us eating watermelon. healthy as watermelon is they have us feeling like we done did something bad.

He humiliated his family and his wife and thank God for her who made him give a million to Spellman to repay what he did to his family. Sharpton and Jackson have worked very hard for Black people. Neither is rich. We all have obligations to our community, not just the Sharptons and Jacksons. Let’s make sure weve put in our time before we dog out the ones who have put theirs in. I married my husband and had our princess after
5yrs of marriage. She just turned 15 yesterday and we are still married. She is our everything and before we had our child it was agreed that all we do is for her first and foremost because she deserves the best that both parents can give!

I had my daughter at 19, and raised her by myself. Her father was young as well. He has stayed in contact but has not been a good father. I have managed to pay the bills, maintain a home, and not use the welfare system.

She is 17 now and ready to graduate high school. She is still a virgin, I have encouraged her to abstain until marriage. She has not experimented in drugs, and follows the rules most of the time.

I agree that two parents are better than one, but sometimes you just can’t make it work together.

The fact is, having a child is a major commitment. Marriage is also a major commitment. There’s something problematic about a society that believes that it is OK to have children out of wedlock, just because. Having a child is HUGE responsibility and the commitment of marriage makes it so that people cannot just up and walk away from their responsibilities. With marriage, people are more incline to work things out as opposed to packing up their belongings and bouncing! The likelihood of children born out of wedlock and both parents being ever-present is more startling than the divorce rate in the US. Don’t get me wrong, by no means do I believe that marriage guarantees ANYTHING! It just make people more conscious of the decision-making process and what goes into it when you have to suddenly divide your assets between multiple people. Child out-of-wedlock have less protection. Then there is the stress of being the sole provider of a child. Without papers, what insurance does a child or parent have?

I will have to agree with all of my pro-marriage compadres. Our society has seemed to forgotten that marriage isn’t simply a choice. It is the one and only way that God, not the courts, but GOD recognizes human union. Anything else is fornication! Ironically enough, we as black people tend to be the most religious of the American races, but the least spiritual. We’re the first to have babies, but the last to get married…SMH We have to stop throwing around God’s name when it is convenient to how we feel like living our lives!
