LAURYN Hill has a new hobby. On Friday, the former Fugee was at the Essex Equestrian Center in West Orange, NJ, asking for a riding lesson. “She just wandered in right off the street,” said our source. “She asked to get on a horse . . . she did OK for her first time.” The mother of five, who has worked little since winning five Grammys in 1998 with her first solo album, “wandered back out the same way she came in,” our tipster said. The Essex center confirmed: “She took a lesson, yeah.”

I am a devout Lauryn supporter and always will be. She is what Michael is to most. I am loyal to the end…..and it is my belief that Lauryn Hill will continue to reign SUPREME. Say what you want but the miseducation of Lauryn is one of the best R&B albums. Lauryn hill is a tremendous talent. Perhaps she was to just raise her kids normal. Maybe she did not want them in the spotlight.
Now when she decides to make a new album it will be better than any of these new artist. That is what you call talent!

And she has came out with other music, if you havent heard the Unplugged she did, i suggest you go grab that, because to me, there is no other artist that is that real. I think a lot went on between Lauryn and Rohan, as you alluded to — I also think Lauryn became very famous very quickly (remember the year she won all the Grammys), and not everyone can handle, nor wants, that sudden crush of being under a microscope.
As for Erykah, I agree with you that she is very conscious and her music is on another level — I think she may be one of those individuals whose talent is on the genius echelon (which is why I love her music), and not everyone may be able to grasp her lyrical context.
Let’s face it — If you only listen to the radio on a daily basis, you will become accustomed to bubble gum, cr*****, basic-level music with little to no innovation. Lauryn, Erykah, and others are far beyond that.
But I happen to think there’s nothing wrong with a creative genius being a little nutty — Some of the best writers, for example, weren’t exactly even-keeled, and their art reflects that, and it’s beautiful. There is beauty and authenticity in the chaos.

Purp, the more I think about it, the more I think it was the crush of fame that may have contributed to her disillusionment, and I think she has talked about it in interviews. I recall an interview she conducted recently with Essence, and I think she discussed that aspect.
I think some people — maybe most, if they had the choice — to immerse themselves in their art and not the high price of fame.

Syd I read the light and dark thing in some interview she did, she basically said they always wanted to put heavy make up on her or lighter make up on her and she didn’t like that and she got to a point where she wouldnt wear any because under all of the makeup she was really unhealthy…or something to that effect, then everyone’s got their Wyclef theories too. ah well

The big difference between Lauryn and Erykah is not that E still puts out (good) music but that she still sounds good. Lauryn’s voice is completely shot! I saw her last year in Oakland when she did that brief tour and the year before in SF and not only did she look like this pic but her already raspy voice was just hard to listen to (no, I mean it was so bad, people were leaving, folks behind us were laughing and only the real die-hards stayed and endured, cheering and shouting out songs hoping she would sing something we knew)…most of the music she did was unrecognizable and, I’m sorry, strange. She even fell on stage and just laid there for a sec, then got up and just continued her thing. When she did sing her old music, it was reprised in stranged ways so you couldn’t get into it, sing along, etc. She didn’t interact with the crowd at all and hardly said a word.
I am a die hard L-Boogie fan too, all the way up to her unplugged album (still listen to “i get out” and “conquering Lion” on my rough days) but I just don’t think she’ll sing again…for a long time. It would take a lot to repair her voice, on top of her mind. Dont mean to be negative, just what I see. Plus, I don’t think she wants that life anymore.
Look at Whitney, she been making a comeback for a few years now.

OK, I didn’t want to delve into this too deeply, but the Essence article on Lauryn sort of alluded to her mind state, and mental illness may be a possibility as well. . .It’s not as if other performers haven’t had their careers derailed, or worse, because of it.
On a side note, I still have yet to see the Unsung special on Phyllis Hyman on TV One. The ones I saw on Donnie Hathaway and DeBarge were chilling.
