Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina was named as the new pope of the Roman Catholic Church. The vote came on the second full day of voting.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio Elected Pope

Via CNBC reports:

The new pontiff is the first ever from the Americas and the first from outside Europe in more than a millennium. He chose the name Pope Francis.

The 76-year-old archbishop of Buenos Aires has spent nearly his entire career at home in Argentina, overseeing churches and shoe-leather priests.

“After announcing `’Habemus Papum” — “We have a pope!” — a cardinal standing on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday revealed the identity of the new pontiff, using his Latin name. Bergoglio had reportedly finished second in the 2005 conclave that produced Benedict XVI — who last month became the first pope to resign in 600 years.

Onlookers cheered earlier after white smoke was seen at the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City, a sign that the group of 115 cardinals had agreed on a new leader following the surprise resignation of Pope Benedict XVI.

Following the decision, the new pontiff changed into traditional white garments, according to a Vatican Radio blogpost. He then participated in a traditional ritual inside the Sistine Chapel and pray in front of the Pauline Chapel.

“Shortly after that, the senior cardinal deacon, French Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran will appear between the red curtains of the central balcony on St Peter’s Basilica to proclaim the famous Latin words ‘Habemus Papam’, revealing the identity of the new pontiff and the name that he has chosen,” the blogpost said.

The newly appointed pope, who is the 266th person to hold the position, greeted the crowds in St. Peter’s Square from the balcony to give a blessing.

Congrats to the Catholics worldwide and their new Pope, peace, salam and shalom to you friends. What do you think of the new Pope?
