Jive Records has dropped Kelis and she is looking for a new record label. Her manager explained her drop to EW:

It was a case of being in the ever-shrinking world of the record industry and finding herself on a label she wasn’t signed to and without a champion,” says Kelis’ manager, Jeff Rabhan. “She’s a different kind of artist — very image and style-driven. It’s either something you get or you don’t.”

Is he trying to blame the label? It’s always the label’s fault, ask old-man LL.

  • law student

    First…i know…

  • Persephani

OMG, Why am I not surprised? That broad is so wack &&` boring. Her music isn’t strong &&` the only worthy hit she had was Milkshake. That Bossy song was repetitive &&` annoying. She just needs to sit her ass down &&` be a house wife for Nas or start a line of designer wigs cause her music talent is garbage. I can’t believe she’s dubbed Star Trak’s first lady.

  • bajan

    @persephani,

u r so right. another beyonceitis victim bites the dust.

beyonce, rihanna, ciara, alicia keys, mary j blige, keyshia cole, mariah carey are today’s black female artistes.

  • asdfjkl;

She got married and stopped fukkin’ for tracks.

  • bajan

i forgot mariah carey half black ass.

  • Heather — THE GREAT!

It could never be that Kelis is just lamer than a MoFo and that is why she got canned. Record lables are in it to make money. Not continually pumping $$$ into something that is not profitable.

  • Oh F@ck That!!!

Yeah…..more room for me!!!! Pick ME Jive, I’ll show you how to make a star baby!!!

  • Oh F@ck That!!!

^^^^I meant amazing songwritting ability. Sorry, trying to watch and listen to the Giants Dolphins game and type at the same time lol.

  • Persephani

    LMAO @ asdfkl;

That’s hella true. Maybe she should stick to doing back up vocals for a Nas skit or something.

  • Jen

SHe is not that good of an artist. I only liked milkshake because they played it so much. I agree with whoever said she stopped Fing for tracks but on the other hand isn’t this Naz’s wife he should be hooking her up. Maybe she is screwing the wrong man.

  • Persephani

Umm The Clipse is still with Star Trak Entertainment..

  • http://miss215.blogspot.com Devin

the label my ass….kelis makes like 1 or 2 songs that are “ok” and the rest suck..

  • kit

kelis is to gimmicky for her own good

  • PERSEPHANi

Mainstream Hip Hop is dead. Jay Z is been fell off he hasn’t had any good shiet since the Blueprint Vol. 1. Nas is fell off the charts when he married Kelis. You got losers saying Weezy is the best rapper alive right now? Yeah right! Lil Wayne is just a teeny bop fad who over uses weak ass metaphors. Real HipHop still exists underground.

  • Mahogany

    Blessing in disguise, maybe?

She better look up J records.

  • Oh F@ck That!!!

    Persephani

Umm The Clipse is still with Star Trak Entertainment..

    ^^^^^^^^^^^

If you referring to my comment about the Clips, it is common knowledge in the music industry that the Clips just went from Jive to Sony/ Columbia with music producer extraordinair Rick Rubin. sweetie.

  • RumRaisin

The way she was complaining about Jive I’m sure she’s glad to be off lol. She’s working with CEE-LO right now according to that Entertainment Weekly article.

She definately will not have any problems getting picked up. She’s a critically acclaimed international artist who is very respected in the biz. If she wants a major deal she’ll have one, if she doesn’t already.

  • Bronx Brawler

She should call Skateboard P lol

  • kai

To her credit, she does come out with a hit every 3-4 years lol. We’ll see how far it goes..

  • http://blacktennispros.blogspot.com http://blacktennispros.blogspot.com

Kelis is a very interesting artist. Jive is a jive record company, dare I say home of Britney Spears? With the right label I think Kelis could have a much more lucrative career.

  • Vanessa

i guess im the only one who liked kelis’ Tasty cd.

it was one of those cds u kind of have to get used to, but yall probably never even heard her cd

  • J

Kelis actually says some worthwhile stuff on her tracks you just gotta listen, she talks about real stuff….then again avg ppl dont like real….and the songs she comes out with arent representative of that….but just like flashy….which is why Beyonce rockin cause she can barely write a meaningful track but hey she get us in the mood to dance….

  • Buckwheat

I agree with you J. Kelis genre of music is a tad too progressive for the garden variety black music listener, who must be spoon-fed and told what to like. She (Kelis) is more alternative in the same vein as older alterna-soul artist suchas: Maggie’s Dream, Family Stand, Lenny Kravitz, Cree Summers, Neneh Cherry et al.

  • http://www.gravatar.com Mzgapeach

She aint all that talented……I like her style but the “game” is watered down with to many artists like her all flash and NO substance

  • Just Sit And Be Pretty

Who’s surprised. I can only remember 3 of her songs, the i hate you so much song where she’s screaming, milkshake and bossy (which sucked)!!

  • Linda

Her cd was good!! You got to Listennn

  • Mary J Blige

wow that is such a shock! didnt see that coming!!! NOT ROFLMAFAOOO!!!!DEAD!!!LOL!!LONG REIGN THE QUEEN OF HOP HOP SOUL

    Mary x

  • Black Beauty

I’m not surprised this happen. I’m only surprised it took them so long. She has been given chance after chance and has failed to produce a hit album. The label is losing money trying to make Kelis pop off, so you can’t be made. For her and her manager to blame the label is lame.

  • wow

WOW…THESE ARE THE WEAKEST,LEAST INFORMED PEOPLE ON THE NET…YALL KNOW NOTHING ABOUT NOTHING…SHE HAS STUPID FANS OVERSEAS WHERE THE COMMON MUSICHEAD REALLY KNOWS WHAT TRUE TALENT,UNIQUENESS,AND STYLE REALLY IS…AND HER MUSIC DIDNT START WIT “MILKSHAKE” NOR WILL IT END WITH IT…

  • http://www.TheShoeGame.com G-Roc

    That’s all bad…

  • http://myspace.com/w3sp3cial3nt Maggi Baby

    haha

  • moxpoe1

not surprised that she was dropped. Always wondered why she was successful in the first place.

  • Just Sit And Be Pretty

Wow, let’s think logically. Does it matter that she has “stupid fans” overseas? If she’s not selling mad CDs in AMERICA or selling out concerts, who cares about foreign fans? An overseas fan base will NOT be enough to sustain a sucessful career, especially when you are in a competitive pool.

  • Oh F@ck That!!!

@ WOW Who cares if everyone else likes you when the people at home don’t feel you. She is an American. She should have focused on AMERICAN SALES and this AMERICAN LABLE wouldn’t have DROPPED her American ass….. LMBAO!!!!!

  • Country Girl

Kelis is a very unique artist, and like her manager said either you get her, or you don’t. I get her, and I support her by BUYING her CD’s. I especially like the one that was only released in Europe. She won’t have a problem getting another deal, if that is what she wants.

  • Akurit

I am not a Kelis fan, from her very first song I couldn’t stand her. but I am not going to completely put her at fault because Jive has been known not to promote their artists very well. They keep pushing crappy artists like Brittany Spears upon us. But then again, Kelis is garbage to me too coming out with all these songs “Men Haters Songs”.

They let E-40 go and what happened. He went to another label and got his second wind.

  • Matt

When I interned in NYC last summer, she constantly pulled last minute cancellations for many of her radio promotion schedules. Where I worked, she cancelled maybe 2-3 times when trying to promote “Kelis Was Here.” And then she got annoyed that the album flopped. I think she’s a good artist, but needs to realize there is some extra work to do. I know Jive and Hip-Hop don’t mesh, but she should be do well since R Kelly and Chris Brown did well. Oh well.

  • Savannah

SORRY TO HEAR BOUT KELIS, BUT WHY DO PEOPLE CALL LL OLD WHEN HIM & JAY-Z R THE SAME AGE (DO YA RESEARCH) PLUS HE LOOKS YOUNGER THAN ALL THESE OTHER RAPPERS

    http://icedotcom.blogspot.com

  • yes

    I liked Tasty…

  • DANA

    @ SAVANNAH-

maybe because LL is from a different era in RAP music! is LL had started his career at the same time as JAY-Z maybe it would be different, but LL started in hte 80′s, so not only is he old age wise, but musically also! plus alot of people dont know exactly how old jay-z is! i just found out a few weeks ago, them dudes are like one year or a few months apart! IMO they’re BOTH old as hell, too old to be rappin, but thats my opinion!

  • kigali

    @smartie,

    Cosign.

  • kigali

Best move for her is to become a fashion icon, be married to Nas and STFD!

  • Apple

I’m so not surprised….she’s too eccentric for the mainstream..and she’s not consistent with her hits..she’s only got like 3 hits to her name..All spread out with each album..And she’s getting a bit weird. She needs to focus on her husband and make some babies.

  • Axeldee
  • Harlem World

Tell ‘em Mary!!! LMAO. Kelis is here to stay… like it or not. Just because Jive dropped her does not mean she is done. Another record company will pick her up or she could go the indie route. And what does Nas have to do with being or not being dropped? His music is still relevant and hot and she is not him!, she is his wife… LOL. He will support her, try to give her ideas on what angle to come back at the game with and they will keep it movin’. Nas or Kelis would not have careers if they weren’t talented (although some hacks hit some form of paydirt), and you know they are.

  • http://www.gravatar.com Mzgapeach

I mean as a person whose tryna grind and hustle I wish her nuttin but tha best but she dont do it fa me

  • Setting the Record Straight

i think Kelis should stick to fashion

  • Quita

Im kelis biggest fan I love her music and own every one of her albums even the one that only came out in the u.k, so Im gonna support her regardless of how wack everyone thinks she is.

  • Annie

She is big in Europe and is a style icon. People who are worried about her financials obviously have not done much traveling outside the US. There is a whole world out there peeps. A lot of money is to be had outside the US. She just doesn’t subscribe to the same machine that puts out people like Britney and Beyonce, who are brain-less imps who would do anything to sell records. She is original and uncompromising.

  • the soul controller

She got married and stopped fukkin’ for tracks.

    co-sign…

  • The Real Essence 1

ha good for her no talent tired fugly butt! I hate this chick her 15 mins were up 3 yrs ago

  • hey

good for her. Kelis has been complaining it seems for ages about her record company, e.g. she mentioned on Wendy William’s that they released songs against her will. To me she’s a niche artist with a niche fan base and that’s cool. I just hope that along the way she actually takes the time to hone her skills and not just chalk every imperfection up to other people’s inability to see her artistic direction.

  • NubianGoddez

Style and image driven translation = lacking any real talents so “artist” relies on gimmicks.

  • Savannah

@@ Dana Jay-Z started rappin in the 80′s as well with an old school rapper named Jaz-O only diff is he could never secure a deal. I hear but lets call a spade a spade. Heres proof http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sG8lEYhR00I

  • http://orvillelloyddouglas.wordpress.com Orville

Well lets see Kelis sells big time in Europe. The song Lil Star reached no.3 in the UK and no.2 in Ireland. Also, Kelis the hit Bossy was a top 20 hit in America and sold double platinum. Kelis sells she has success. Kelis is STILL signed to Virgin records in Europe. America isn’t Kelis main market anyway. Kelis sells more albums OUTSIDE of the USA. I don’t think Kelis needs the American market to be successful!

  • DANA

    @ savannah

jay-z was a serious NOBODY in the 80′s so that really doesnt count, in my book!

  • dayg715

she was wack anyway. i’m surprised it took jive this long to drop her corny ass.

  • the truth

can we photoshop her out of the picture and just leave dania?

Okay, I’ve read all your comments and respect them highly. But, I must say that Kelis is more talented than what you give her credit for. I give her major props for thelinking outside the box and doing the music that she loves. Unlike many artist today, i.e., Beyonce, Ciara and Rihanna who make music that appeals to a broad range of individuals, mainly teenagers, refer to Beyonce’s Irreplaceable, she does what makes her happy. She is talented. Can you make an album and connect with people all around the world? I cant. I love her. Although you all may not get her she is a force in the industry. I know she’ll bounce back! I love you Kelis!!!!!! All you other fools EAT CAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
