$100 million down, $20 million to go for the new MLK memorial:

46 years after he gave his famous “I Have a Dream Speech” in Washington on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, Martin Luther King Jr. is finally being immortalized with his own memorial in our nation’s capitol.

With the historic inauguration of the U.S. first black president coming a day after King would’ve turned 80, if he were still alive, the amount needed to build the memorial has almost been reached.

According to AOL’s BlackVoices.com, more than $100 million has been raised in donations for the construction of the MLK memorial.

The total cost of the memorial is estimated to reach $120 million, so there’s still some financial ground to cover.

Former president, Bill Clinton, is one of the memorial’s supporters, and revealed why during a fundraiser in Miami recently.

“I signed the legislation authorizing the memorial,” he said. “I thought it ought to be on the National Mall because that’s where he delivered his most important speech. … Just nine days after my 17th birthday, and I could still quote that speech today. It changed America in profound ways.”

The MLK memorial will be built sometime this year, on a four-acre corner of the National Mall, on the banks of the Potomac River between the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials.

How fantastic would it have been to have the memorial already in place to put the icing on the cake for this weekend’s events?  That takes nothing away from the festivities and sense of proud that will be felt either way.

    No prob…that would be a rip-off like a mofo

An American should be doing this statue… Haven’t we outsourced enough? You can’t make me believe they couldn’t find a single American sculptor who could do a better job than this. To have the memorial of a man who represented freedom be designed by a country that doesn’t even grant freedom to its own people is a disgrace. They got MLK looking like a communist in that statue-he looks angry!

  • knottmyhair

yes! during the reign of Obama….yes we can.

  • MH

Iam soooooooo happy for this I can’t wait to go to D.C. and seeeee it!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Marshabio

There should’nt be a fund, the goverment should pay for it. besides, the likeness is ugly. So many of the monuments dedicated to Black American’s are offensive, or just don’t accurately depict the person in question.

MLK has gotten his due. Now let us focus on those persons and events over looked. We are in sore need of the actual facts concerning the history of blacks in The United States of America.

  • Marshabio

Is there a reason why MLK looks Asian here? The only thing I MAY be able to recognize is MAYBE the lips????

  • Marshabio

*maybe the nose* Wack @ss sh*t……

    You people have nooooo idea….

I’m going to have to shut-up about this one.

  • posy

they better have the final statue of mlk looking better than this one. his statue should be life sized and not made of sand. and he shouldn’t be looking mad, he should be looking powerful and respected. they can do better than this. if only he were alive to see his dream come true.

  • Voice of Reason

    @ chiney K:
The final statue will be 8 feet taller than the Lincoln Memorial.

Don’t worry everybody. This isn’t the final design. It has been rejected by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts which gets the final say on this project. The eyes look too much like Mao Zedong. The stance and the demeanor are too reminiscent of Russion dictators like Stalin. It really doesn’t resemble MLK Jr. at all. That picture is 8 months old. The new design hasn’t been revealed to the public yet.

  • Scooby Dubious

The priorities here are wack. That $100 million would be better spent endowing an engineering scholarship for black kids or funding a charter school. At the very least, subsidizing study centers, enrichment programs, educational software or textbooks for minority kids. Put the money where it can yield a return on investment. Funding a vanity project, however dear to the hearts of black Americans, is shortsighted. It isn’t even much of an honor, as public art projects tend to be mediocre. If we want to “honor” King, we could do far worse than spend what little common wealth we have to improve our lot by tangible measures. Boo, black people!

  • always knew

There was a big deal about this over a year ago, Lou Dobbs on CNN, was stating that, he along with others thought that a black American should’ve been picked to do the statue. They said a panel chose him out of othes, and his portrait was the most-liked….I thought it was VERY odd, that an Asian would be picked to do, the tribute to Dr. King….But, at the end of the day, I just want it to becompleted an the memorial done….There are not enough statues to black leaders, that have given their lives for the betterment of all….

I’m still waiting for one, on Malcolm. I was surprised that his daughters have not taken a more active role, in getting him memoralized, in American History…

  • Ignorant

Wow… complaining – why am i not surprised. We should all be happy that MLK is never ever forgotten – not amongst black, hispanics & asians. I grew up admiring MLK more than anyone, and I’m not black.

Enough with the complaints & ignorant talk. Looking forward to seeing the new design.

    yap yap yappin

  • brightseat_bully

Yes, da oo-chow, please elaborate. Then eat a d*ck and die slow.

  • Spartylicious

And to the folks mad about an Asian man making MLK’s sculpture, shut yo ass up! This man submitted his design along with every other artist. He won. So what? What was it the Dr. King said about wanting his kids to be judged by the content of their character, not by the color of their skin. He would proud if a black artist won, but equally as proud that another minority out there could be in the running for this momentous event.

There should have been a black person sculpturing MLK and that’s on the real. Having an Asian do this like having a black person design a car in China or Japan. An Asian reminds many of them owning liquor states and bread for $3.50 in the hood. Why should we have to pay of a MLK Monument when that retard Bush who butchers the english language, gets a free library? This something wrong here.

  • The Insider

A majority landscape design firm in San Francisco won the competition to design the memorial. They joint ventured with An african american architectural firm on the project…..Devrouax & Purnell Architects. The MLK foundation was very sloooooow to pay their bills and disagreements ensued. Hence D&P settled with the MLK foundation and another “Negro” firm McKissack and McKissack was engaged for construction management… BTW look up the Black Patriots memorial…. also to be on the Mall and designed by ED Dewight, a “black” sculptor of note.

MLK is highly respected for his efforts and accomplishments throughout his life, but why is it so easy for people to put out a 120 mil on a statue but yet people are jobless, homeless and starving accross the nation.Do you actually think that MLK would rather have that money thrown away on a pile of sand or used to help better the living conditions of the people this nation. Some of you are so out of touch with reality it is ridiculous. Why are the so called leaders of this country so caught up on putting so much money into projects that don’t really better the living conditions of the citizens of this nation, like a crumbling infrastruture.
