A brutal fight erupted Tuesday night on a Sacramento light rail train after a man jumped in to defend a woman police say was the victim of domestic violence.

The woman on the train reportedly had bruises and complained of being hit as the couple continues to argue. Police say the security officer on the train tried to calm the situation before a “third party” intervened violently.

“The third party involved in this thought he was coming to the aid of the woman and whether he made the situation worse, I am sure some people on the train though so. But the situation was carried off the train and nobody on the train was hurt,” said Sacramento Police Officer Doug Voska.

The security officer used his radio to call for backup and followed the fight off the train. Voska said the officer was punched while trying to keep the fight off the train.

Police and Regional Transit say the guard acted appropriately. Officials say they would rather passengers not get involved in disputes physically.

Voska says to get some distance between yourself and the situation and call the authorities.

The man who came to the woman’s rescue was not charged with a crime. The guy he beat up was.

In a video posted to YouTube of the fight, the two men bump into a woman holding a baby.
