*Exclusive* [Pt. 1] Kanye Discusses Religion

In Part one of Bossip’s exclusive interview with Kanye, he discusses his recently questioned “religion,” his thoughts on what makes a man sexy and why America, and, well, maybe the world, thinks he’s off his pastelle rocker:
People think I’m crazy just because they don’t understand where I’m coming from. The one thing about Barack is that, of course he words things very well, very politically correct, his main medium is that of speeches, so it requires you to listen to his complete thought. Whereas with me, it’s just sound bites. People never realize that I’m a bit of a comedian so I talk very sharply. If you take a sound bite from a stand up it’s gonna sound completely crazy. They’ll say this person is a cultural icon, blah, blah, blah, but he said this thing that’s kind of funny, but it’s true… but if I put it right here it’ll make him sound crazy.
Bossip: We got the latest issue of Vibe and there was a little controversy stirring that they photo-shopped a grey beard on you?
Yeezy: I think it’s just the way the lighting looked. I look back at a lot of my photos and the way photographers go in with me is that they think of me as this music guy, this crazy guy, this cultural guy or like musical genius and all this stuff. When you go in with Britney, you’re thinking ‘Oh, she’s a sex symbol’. So, you’re gonna pick a certain photographer for that. You’re gonna shoot them in a particular way. My thing is to not focus on the whole crazy, genius music dude. ..to light me properly. That’s the reason I shoot videos with Hype Williams in the first place. I don’t think it was photo-shopped, I think it was just the way it was lit. I didn’t think that they had a choice of really amazing photos to choose from anyway. I think they went for the way my eyes looked on it and just the way the lighting turned out, we kind of came out grey.Bossip: Do you want to be photographed as a sexy, suave, debonair rapper?
Yeezy: I think that I have a lot of fun with clothes. I don’t have a lot of limitations. Even when you saw the black party, it was one of those things where imma let people know that I get busy. Every now and then Marc Jacobs, he’ll do all these crazy collaborations and he’ll do all these crazy shows. Every now and then he’ll do a show that shows that he’s a serious fashion guy. Regardless of how big he is, he can still get serious. People just limit themselves. They try to do a certain type of suit every time and I get bored with that. Most of the things I do, I do out of boredom. I look at life like a video game and I just kind of like to play with it.Bossip: Yeezy, what makes a man sexy to a woman?
Yeezy: In my situation as a single mogul and as a grown man, what should make a guy sexy to a woman is the idea of security. Security and time are the sexiest things that you can give to a woman. The idea that you can spend time with them, and the idea that they’re not gonna have to worry about anything; worry about you cheating. They’re not gonna have to worry about the light bill or the car bill. I think you can exude some of that in the way you dress. If you dress too silly, you look like you’re just playing around and you might not pay the bills.Bossip: So what happened with you and Alexis? Can you explain why you broke up?
Yeezy: No, I wouldn’t explain to anybody particularly why we broke up on the blog. Alexis is a very private, sweet person and she never wanted to have this amount of limelight in the first place.Bossip: We recently saw your quote “I don’t believe in religion, and I don’t believe in giving it all up to Jesus.” Does this mean that you’re no longer a Christian?
Yeezy: I believe in God. Christianity wasn’t an option when I was growing up, it was the only thing. It wasn’t like I was given the decision at the time. You know how you decide that you want to be a Doctor or a Lawyer or a painter or a basketball player or whatever? You’re not given a decision of what religion you want. Your parents just give it to you. Like, you’re a Jew or you’re a Muslim or you’re a Christian. I feel like religion is more about separation and judgment than bringing people together and understanding. That’s all I’m about. I’m about accepting people for who they are. Live and let live. I fully embrace every culture there is. I love when people are who they are to the fullest. Like, I think that Cam’ron is just as much a fashion icon as Stefano Pilati, who is basically the best dressed person on Earth. That’s the head designer of YSL. (Yves Saint Laurent)
Bossip: If you had to give yourself a specific religious title, like are you studying anything new now?
Yeezy: I would never go into a religion. I guess my religion is just what I do religiously when I wake up in the morning. I had a conversation with my Dad when I was twenty years old and I don’t believe in this everybody’s going to hell thing; everyone who isn’t a Christian is in the wrong. His response at that time was, ‘Well I’d hate to see you not spend eternity with me and burn in the depths of hell.’ I was like well hell, I don’t want that to happen, so let me set up this insurance plan and just do this. (he laughs) . My father is much more open-minded about that now, though.Bossip: So do you believe in Jesus at all?
Yeezy: I believe in Jesus as an icon, but I don’t feel the responsibility to put my life on Jesus. I feel I need to take responsibility for my own successes and failures. Why I say, ‘I don’t give it all up to Jesus’ is because there are a lot of people who don’t take responsibility for their lives, and always think Jesus is gonna handle it. And, that’s what I refuse to do. Christianity is embedded in who I am, so I will still say things like this is a blessing, amen, and still say prayers; things that your Grandmother embedded in you. I’m always gonna have a little Chicago in me, a little hood in me, and a little Christianity in me. Just because it’s what I know. But, I do not believe that other religions are going to hell, I do not believe in a lot of elements of it. I want to express to people that I do believe in God, but I also have friends whom are atheists. I have friends that are super duper Christians. If I come to a person that’s a super Christian and I tell them what I believe in and they tell me what they believe, I super respect that. I like when people are into what they’re into. If that’s your thing, and you break it down and you’re really into the bible and you believe everything about it, and you believe in immaculate conception and stuff like that. Like, you believe in the “rib” and all that, I’m just like, man, that’s dope for you. People will say ‘Aw, man he wasn’t saying that Jesus thing when he made the song!’ But, when I made the song, that’s how I felt, but this is six years later. This is how I feel now. The whole thing about religion, other people’s religion and other things that they shell out, I have my own opinion on everything. Anything that I take, I’m going to do it my way. Like, if I take a car, I’m going to paint it the way I want to paint it. My thing was, after my mom passed, it wasn’t a thing where I lost my mind or anything. I was less scared to speak my mind. Cause there’s nothing I could lose. There’s nothing that could be taken away from me. Soon as you’re not willing to change and go off of what you feel that morning, your life starts moving in reverse like Benjamin Button or something. Now, you’re moving backwards, you’re not growing anymore. Life is about change and if you’re not willing to change you’re not really willing to live your life, and soak in the amount of new information that’s given to you. Since day one, I knew the difference between right and wrong. I could predict what was happening. I had karma and anyone who’s ever had beef with me, something happened to them, like it’s really just been in God’s hands.Religion is like clothing. People want comfort. People don’t want to have to take that off. People don’t want to accept the concept of there not being a heaven possibly, or the concept of losing someone and not seeing them again. The only thing that keeps you going is the idea that you will see them again.
It’s [religion] also like branding. Some people go Bapes head to toe, some people do Polo head to toe. Some people go Rocawear head to toe. Me, I kind of just go into the store and take the piece that I like the most. I’m no poster child for any particular brand. What I have to realize and what shocks people, or polarizes people is that I’m actually a brand. I’m something that people build up and believe in. They name their kids because they believe Kanye believes this. But I’m also a real person; a growing person and an artist. I don’t want the responsibility of waiting to move because this many people believe this. Like, if you believe in Kanye, if you believe in me, then just believe that I’m going to be honest with you and express to you what I believe that day. I’m not gonna be holding a congregation and fucking prostitutes and it come out to them years later. I’m gonna come to the congregation like man, last Friday I got some head from a prostitute, I’m just gon’ go head and let y’all know.

I see his point with the religion issue…people tend to twist religion into something to suit their preferred lifestyle.
Nevertheless, religion can provide structure and guidance in your life. Life without structure can be chaotic and miserable.

I do believe people need the structure of what religion can offer…and religion, itself, is meant to be a good thing. It’s the people who misuse and abuse it. Resulting in seperation, slavery, condemnation, and judgement.

Religion is not required for everyone. The “structure” it provides is simply a code of ethics that is common sense and comes naturally to well-raised people.
So I’d say SOME people need it, and i’m perfectly happy that they get it. I do not want their views forced on me or anyone else. That’s the bigger issue for me.
You know, now that I finally finished reading this (thanks coffee), I think he made some valid points regarding religion.
Part 1 has given me a headache, so I don’t know if I can read Part 2. I used to seriously stan for Kanye, but he is really starting to get on my nerves. Like he said, he does things out of boredom; and I believe he answers questions out of boredom and without giving them too much thought. He is in need of an Intervention. God will see to that. (Trust) I predict he will have a breakdown, pop up somewhere a year or so later, preaching the gospel.
Side bar: After reading his thoughts about religion, I think he is confused about his own statement. I will keep him in my prayers. In meantime Kanye, Shut up. Thanks

He made the structure of religion simple and plain. People need religion to conceptualize God or something they cannot fully understand or explain. But like he said when you step out of that box and open your mind and rely on your values and morals you can’t go wrong. It’s much easier to conceptualize a man creating this earth and man and woman than it is to imagine us all as energy.

Nice interview….Kanye shouldn’t have dropped his truth like that – we KNOW how many people are slaved to religion, he might get hurt for it. Lol @ everyone blaming his mother’s death for his ‘new’ change. You’ve never had a convo with the man, but suddenly you know him so well. Thats what happens when you watch TV too much, the lines of reality and illusion start getting blurry.
And yes, people can believe in Jesus one moment & believe him to be an illusion the next. I think it’s called change. You’ll find out that some people go from one side to the another a lot ( religious – atheist and vice-versa). It usually shows that the people are thinking for themselves, whether they get it ‘right’ or ‘wrong’.

I agree with him on the religion part. I came from a really religious family and Christianity was shoved down my throat. I don’t agree with it at all because Whites used Christianity to justify slavery and they used to tell slaves that could never go to heaven because they were Black.
I think all of the monotheistic religions such as Christianity, Islam, Judaism are all to confusing and there is always so much conflict. I’m starting to get into African/Native American pagan religions and I’m considering buddhism.

I’ve been studing Zen Buddhism and Egyptian/Kemetic practice.
I like Buddhism…it’s not about religion, it’s about awakening your inner spirit as well as opening yourself to the conflict and suffering of others. Because it’s not a religion, many people practice it because it doesn’t conflict with their personal religious choses.

The problem with Christ, like Kanye is doing here is that he is able to be manipulated, distorted and used (but they will all get their big day) Atheists and of course Muslims are the biggest Christ twisters at there.
Atheists were the first to get in on the Christ act, and this was done by a Roman Emperor called Constantine. While true Christians were laying low and being persecuted for worshipping Christ, Constantine an open Pagan and Atheist found a way to use the christ religion for his own Empire and rule with a powerful rod and over people’s fear and manipulate his people this way. Yes he used Christs name which was solely used for peace, tolerance, forgiveness and love before he turned up, for judgement, war, and greed and founded the roman catholic church even though he was not a christian, he later admitted (towards the end of his life) christ was more or less the son of god but only in and intellectual way not spiritual.
Christ can be distorted and Kanye with his small time crazy self is doing it and has no business doing it either he is a Freemason.
One can rationalise Christ all day or think about him with an intelligent informative mind, that isnt what the message of christ is, it is about believing and following consciously not picking the bits you like or not or trying to mull over your mind if there is a heaven or not. We are yet to truly figure out how the world started or how it was made, let alone Hell or heaven!

Wow, that’s cool. I thought I was the only Black person interested in those sort of things. My family thinks that I’m nuts, they told me that they would rather hear that I’m pregnant or a lesbian than to hear that I don’t want to be a Christian.
Did you know that Christianity has some “pagan” roots? The whole Mary/Jesus thing is very common. If you look at other religions they have the same mother/child imagery. For example, Egyptian religion Isis/Horus, if you look at some hieroglyphics they are always pictured together as mother and child. Also Zeus/and his mother Rhea from Greek mythology.

Christ is about tolerance, peace, forgiveness, love, fellowshipping. Christ washed the feet of a prostitute and saved her from certain death by people who want to judge her. There is no place in the bible where Christ has given us permission to judge anyone, so to me, people should stop fearing him and start promoting the real message of what he was about!

A simple way to put this would be to pray and seek God see if answers some prayers …I was in a christian home where it was Jesus all day everyday but i ?ed the bible myself ..but ssomething can happen when u dont seek God for what your mother knows and family ….SEEK GOD FOR YOURSELF..try him and see if he is real..don’t just write him off like some garbage…Fact (there is actual recordings of man named yAHSHUA (JESUS IN ENGLISH) crucified by Cesar …ppl there will always be info on God being here and not….but if you would just pray and study a little not for your mom and ppl like that but for your self u might or might not get a different view…..GOD IS LOVE ALWAYS

Buddhism is a really good way to come into your spirituality. Reading about the Dali Lama and other books along that line are very inspiring. I have a book by the lama foundation called Be Here Now which is a workbook of spirituality.

Have you even looked in to Zen Buddah? Many religious sectors practice Zen Buddah because it is simply self-knowledge. It is about nuturing your inner strength through meditation (awakening the inner spirit) and mindfulness. Meditation can be a prayer…but is suppose to be a clearing of the mind so that you are more receptive to life and love…and God. It is the attempts to live with a pure of heart excluded of hate, anger, and envy.

It’s the practices and the fact that many people don’t have a choice growing up as to who they believe in or what they believe. The truth of the matter is when you become a man/woman you make these choices for yourself. You must make the transition from “practicing a religion” to developing a relationship with God for yourself. People’s gripes with Christianity usually stem from problems in Churches which are institutions governed by man. As we all know man is not perfect so they will fall short of the glory whether they are a Choir member, Deacon, Usher or Bishop. God is proven to be real when you give him the chance. Pray to him and wait to hear from him and if you can tell me that you don’t find him after you DILIGENTLY seek him then I wouldn’t even know what to say. Let’s move from “Religion” to RELATIONSHIP. That’s when you will know God for yourself and know that we are all here because of the blood shed by his son Jesus. Be Blessed!

I leave you people with a thought: I rather believe in God, for the simple fact that i have nothing to loose by believing, in fact, you have all to gain because the laws of the land was framed after Christian principles, for example the ten commandments. However, lets say i don’t believe and their is a God, i have all too loose, so at the end, believing costs you nothing. Ok, I’m not the only one that has been avoiding the iPod thing for a while. My daughter is on her second one already but I still stick to my cds…….oh and i forgot to mention, I also have multiple shoe boxes with casette tapes in them…..but no tape player. LOL…I remember when they came out with the feature where you could “flip” the tape on the walkman just by hitting a button…..exciting times, for the times.

In some ways regarding religion, Kanye has valid points but I do not like how he makes every Christian out to be super religious, you will go to hell if you do this or that…a true Christian knows that it is not up to us to decide where you go once you p***** on, only God can dictate that, everyone makes mistakes so everyone sins, it is just the way things are…no I don’t know Kanye to say where he is coming from but from what we do know, he almost died and then came out with “Jesus Walks,” and now that his mother has p*****ed on, he denounces Jesus, saying that he is an Icon…now that is what is messed up and clearly this man has some deep rooted issues, what I know about death is that every person who loses someone close to them, grieves and not everyone grieves the same, for some folks it takes longer them others for that grief to hit them and depending how they take those losses, some grow closer to God and some further apart, clearly Kanye is a lost man b/c although a person changes over 6 years, for the most part if your relationship with God is strong, it won’t change…up until my college years, I prayed every single night but once I graduated high school, for some reason I just couldn’t keep up those prayers I made sure I made every night, my relationship with God did not change b/c I still believe in Him, I just got a lil caught up in adult life is all but He knows what is in my heart….as far as Kanye goes, don’t listen to a lost man

This whole “Blacks against Religion” thing comes as no surprise to me anymore. Just another thing to blame whites for (“we only know God and Christianity through whitey”). This new wave of black atheism and God denial corresponds to the growing rate of black out of wedlock pregnancies, criminality, unjust behaviour and social failure. Blacks don’t want to be responsible for their messed up behaviour and the easiest way to continue to live their lives without any morals is to say “f*ck God”. You know things are wrong when a white atheist has more morals than the majority of blacks (religious or non-religious) who, up until this point still have the highest rates of out of wedlock pregnancy and sexual promiscuity out there.
All I have to say is the book of Revelations does not lie, but by the time you people finally get to your senses, it will be too late. Out of curiousity, what method does your company use for interviews? We had been using open ended questioning (made popular by Microsoft) but now we are switching to the “targeted selection” method which concentrates more on a job candidates past tasks, how they were handled and the result of their effort. In other words, to hell with what you did…..how did you do it.

Just FYI…If you are being interviewed, appearance means a lot. I don’t care how good of an interview you are, if you are looking beat, chances are you aren’t going to get the job. The conversations that go on behind close doors with your interviewers about you after you have left is not as formal as what you might think……..they will clown your appearance, speech, posture, odor (don’t be bathing in cologne/perfume), etc. before your actual credintials are even mentioned.
Avoid putting down any company you have worked for in the past. Even if you left on a sour note, do everything you can to shed a positive light on your experience. Interviewers will sometimes purposely ask for you to convey your faults, bad experiences or otherwise times “when something didn’t go right”…don’t be scared of these questions. You are not being asked this so they can judge you on the problem or fault….they are looking for your response and reaction to it. “…..but from that incident I learned _________________” is the catch phrase they are looking for.
Overall, just remember most interviewers have an angle with their questioning…..there is a method to the madness.
As far as resumes, keep it at one page whenever possible…..long resumes are usually not read in their entirity anyway. It doesn’t hurt to buy some colored resume paper…no loud colors, but a settle color that is not white helps your resume stand out in the “pile”. Oh, and take your address off of it…..telephone #, email is suffecient. Place of residence sometimes can give hints to your ethnicity and we all know that can keep you from getting the interview. Lastly, if you are going to embellish or downright lie on your resume, memorize your *****. Its will be awkward if you are asked to fill an application out prior to your interview and your info doesn’t match at all……I’ve seen it and the applicant basically had no chance of getting the job….before he even had a chance to shake a hand.

So true — My mother has undergone diversity training, and we’ve talked about this issue. And, yes, I did have a few white dolls (although my parents made sure I had black dolls). I read books by white authors, had white friends, took European history, etc.
I think part of the Obama phenomenon has been White America’s introduction to normal, educated, hard-working, law-abiding African Americans. The kind you don’t see enough of in popular culture. They speak eloquently, they have a strong, close-knit family unit, and they’ve worked very hard to get where they are today. For some whites, that’s a rarity to see, and it’s a big adjustment for their point-of-view.

Is Christianity a White Man’s Religion?

The issue of whether or not Christianity is a white man’s religion is interesting. One must wonder why this is even an issue for discussion. No one ever asks if Buddhism is a white man’s religion, or if Islam is a black man’s religion. It is only Christianity that must face such a test. We can presuppose that Jesus was not white because he was born in a region where the people had color. We also know that Jesus was in Africa for the bible says, “out of Egypt have I called my son” (Ho. 11:1). Furthermore we know that an Ethiopian Eunuch “of great authority” accepted Jesus as Savior and Lord before Paul (who preached to the Romans) is even converted to Christianity. (Acts 8:27-39) Even though we know all of these things, black Christians are still forced to address the issue of whether or not Christianity is a white man’s religion.
Now in the spirit of fairness to those who would pose such a question, one could argue that European missionaries taught a version of Christianity that differs from the message of the gospel. They taught a p*****ive form of Christianity that encouraged blacks not to fight back, but to embrace their low status as the will of God. This argument may have held some validity hundreds of years ago when slaves struggled, fought and even died trying to learn how to read. But today, I know that God shall supply all my needs (Phil. 4:19); today I know that “though wars should rise against me in this I can be confident (Ps. 27:3) So, while such an argument may have held some validity years ago, today, I as well as other black people can read the word of God and discern the truth for ourselves.
Another argument is that southerners used Christianity to justify slavery. Jesus said slaves obey your masters, so he must have been advocating the practice of slavery. So if Jesus said obey, why should we resist? The thing is for us, as black people to remember when reading the bible is to keep things in perspective. Jesus was not talking about slaves in North America. He was referring to the people of that time period who were in bondage to Rome. We have to be careful that we don’t let our own experiences of our racial history in America distort our attempts to understand Biblical history.
Another common argument is that white Christians don’t even want us in their churches. If we claim the same Jesus, why can’t we worship at the same church? This stereotype generalizes so called white churches and really is not worthy of discussion. I have visited many white churches that have embraced me as a brother, welcoming me to worship with them at any time. In fact, it was at a “so-called” white church where I first learned of the martyrdom of black African Christians at the hands of Muslim fanaticals in the Sudan. [Additionally] racism is not advocated anywhere in the gospel, so those churches who practice racism will definitely have to answer for their actions. [Gal. 3:28 states emphatically “there is neither Jew nor Greek, neither slave nor free, neither male or female for all are one under Christ Jesus] Jesus said, “not everyone who says to me Lord, Lord shall enter into the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 7:21).
So while these arguments may [sometimes] seem logical, we who know Him, know that “there is a way which seemeth right unto man” (Prov. 14:12), we also know that “the end results thereof are death.” When discussing issues such as this remember, it is human nature to want to complicate things, to know fully the authenticity of everything we come across. This is a good thing. For the acquisition and application of knowledge is vital to the growth and development of any individual, group or nation. However, when it comes to Christianity the bible keeps it simple. “Confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead and you are saved” (Ro. 10:9). The bible further acknowledges that, “whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Ro. 10:13). It seems to me, you certainly don’t have to be white to call upon the name of the Lord.

I for one really appreciate Kanye’s stance on religion. There are those who do not realize when they say I am a Christian, Muslim or Jew, that they are separating themselves from those who do not share their believe system. Religion more than race or cl***** is the greatest separator in this world.
There are many many good people of faith, but believing as all holy books tell you…That your right and everyone else is wrong..as these books all say…causes only division, hatred and war.
There is no defense for what religion has done to this world. I cite examples:
Africans enslaved and shipped to America–Slavery is condoned in the bible and koran.
Women treated as no more than animals – Forced submission of women is condoned in all holy books.
Poverty ignored and encouraged – We will always have the poor with us – a quote from the bible.
Black people around the world are guilty of the magical thinking and superstition that in itself keeps us down.
Look at Africa today, men, women and children dying in senseless wars–wars not for land for riches–no, the usual suspect—christians and muslims–who forgot they were brothers killing each other–Sudan–Uganda–Congo–etc.
For these reasons, I say Kanye is spot on

Sorry. I really feel sorry for Kanye. I don’t feel like being a Christian is something that you choose to be.It’s not like picking a pair of jeans. I agree and disagree with Kayne. Yes people are responsible for themselves, but that has nothing to do with religion being wrong, bad or divisive. I always find it odd how religion is used for the reason for “division”…..To me religion has not be the heart of every war…human greed and lust for domination has been. Religion is a convenient scapegoat for both sides to say “see religion made me do it” and removes human agency from the equation. Religion in itself does not make people wage war as much as it makes people do good, people use religion as a rational for wars, which is a different to me. I can say a Krispy Kream is my religion and wage a war. Who are you gonna hold responsible me or the crispy cream?…Me right….organized religion is no different…. When people say “religion” did it, it removes human thought and free will from the equation. If we could just get rid of religion everything would be o.k is a myth beyond myths. For everything to be o.k we would have to get rid of the human…race…

He went from knowing Jesus back then, praying to him to have a better life, and help with his dream, and creativity, gets better life, pays tribute to him in the beginning stages with college dropout, then gets even better life, goets deeper in Hollywood, lets others influence his viewpoints, and it infiltrates, now doesn’t believe. Hollywood is sadly mistaken. So many people get there praying to God, Jesus, then when they get there it is left behind for some other illogical, THEORETICAL reasoning that only MAN can bring. But with choices come consequences that he will have to face, and is now facing…he is so emotionally disturbed, and doesn’t even know. In all things, I will pray for him, and many who choose the path, then abandon it once got what they wanted.

Religion simply keeps you grounded and the fact that he’s let that go means he’s probably let go of a lot of other things..

Also there is a theory that atheists just believe that THEY themselves are God… now I won’t go as far as saying Kanye’s ego is THAT big but, I’m just putting it out there… he should strive to humble himself whether or not he’s Christian but to abandon it just because he thinks he can figure out the world better even though he was born into a world that existed before him is a scary proposition and I know he has better sense than that…

Traditions should be disbanded that don’t or are not supported by truth. If traditions hold true throughout generations there is likely some truth to them.
