Phonte’s Spittin’ Out Fightin’ Words

Posted by Bossip Staff

phonte coleman

In essence, Phonte of Little Brother says Yeezy’s newest album is on some straight punk sh*t:

Via a recent interview, Little Brother’s Phonte surprisingly told an interviewer that he wasn’t feeling West’s attempt at singing, whatsoever. “I’ve heard … pretty much … most of the Kanye West album, and I didn’t like it. I was just like ‘Get the f*** outta here,’” said the rapper.

“I personally did not like the album. I thought it was … I honestly thought it was an act of cowardice. I just think that if you’re gonna make the creative leaps to sing, then really sing. Let your voice come out, and let people hear all the idiosyncrasies in your voice because that’s what makes you uniquely you,” Phonte continued.

According to the rapper, after initially hearing West’s 808s and Heartbreak, he was reminded of another popular artist who utilized the auto-tune effect. Ultimately, Phonte says his tune of the robotic effect takes away from your original voice, and that isn’t a good thing.

“Imagine if Aretha Franklin would’ve used auto-tune over ‘Respect.’ It’s like all the soul and actual grit and emotion would’ve been gone. That’s what it’s like to me. I heard [808s and Heartbreak] and was like ‘Ok, this n**** is just biting T-Pain,’ ” he said.

While he understood what West was trying to do with the album’s release, he felt the way the producer did it should’ve been different. “It’s like he really wanted to do more, but he just really don’t got the talent to do that sh**,” Phonte concluded.

Awww shucks. A lot of folks weren’t feeling that vocoder steez, but calling ‘808’s & Heartbreak ‘an act of cowardice?’ Gotdamn. We can’t wait to her Kanye’s rebuttal for this one. SMH.

  3. K-mia

I agree with him, and i dig a some of Little Brother’s music. But most people dont know who they are, and wont care what they think. Oh well.

  4. Film

Little Brother was formed at North Carolina Central University.

They have some pretty hot tracks, and The Minstrel Show is pretty good.

  5. Lady Architect

I liked a lot of the songs on Kanye’s album, but Phonte makes a lot of sense in saying that the autotune should not have been used. I like when Kanye does live performances of the songs off the new album cause a lot of times he leaves out the auto-tune and his emotions come out. Good critique Phonte.

  6. ms meca

  12. PURPPLE

lol@ Re, u get major points girlie!

  13. Sasha

Regardless of whether or not I agree with his conclusion; I must commend the way he articulated himself, for the most part. He intellectually backed up his point, in a specific manner. I don’t know how his music sounds, hopefully its not *****ing about the hood or people needing to be better. I personally prefer, The Strokes ( check 12:51 don’t tell me Kanye was’nt a little bit inspired by that), Interpol, The Yeah Yeah’s etc. HEll I love Britney but hate damn near everyother pop artist. I Do like Kanye and Lil Wayne.

    Tangent over

  14. Okay, who cares what this 30..ish negreo has to say. He must be getting ready to get back in the rap game. Can people market themselves any other way then to start beef with another artists? 18. ME

Those are my dudes! I feel the same way. Kanye let me down on so many levels this year. Hangin out with dudes in skirts and s@#$@ i dont even know how he thinks he can be part of the ROC movement! his p***** has been revoked!

little brother is dope and all. but Kanye = life. like *****, like *****.

  25. emmy

oh yeah, and by the way, if any of the haters has amnesia…Kanye used autotune on his first album…if I recall correctly, that was before TPain was even heard of.

    kthanxbye

  27. Mrs...B*tch to You!

Who is lil’ brother….& kanye’s album was FYE…f*uck u mean!!!

  28. What the...

just think if LB and the other 30 something artists like them didn’t get their albums pushed back, played down or shunned, the game would be so much more interesting.

  29. FURIOUZ STYLEZ

PHONY-***** PHONTE & LITTLES HATER IS MAD CUZ THIS HIS GROUP AINT SELLIN’ NADA AND THEY NEED KANYE AGAIN ON ANOTHER TRACK TO BE RELEVANT!

KANYE AINT SEEIN’ THEM NICCAS–HE OVERSEAS SOME WHERE GETTTIN’ DOUGH OFF THEM NEW LOUIS KICKS AND STILL COLLECTIN’ ROYALTY CHECKS FROM COLLEGE DROPOUT–PHONTE AND LITTLE BROTHER SOMEWHERE BACK IN NC, IN THE HOOD, BEGGGIN 9TH WONDER TO COME BACK, ROLLIN’ AROUND IN A NISSAN SENTRA

  30. Wow, Bossip. Ya’ll funny.

When Phonte had music coming out w/The Foreign Exchange last year, you guys made no mention of him, despite the fact that he and Nicolay produced one the best R&B albums (if not THE BEST) in 2008. But the first time he says something you guys deem “controversial”, got his pic and words up there big as day. Interesting.

For those of you who DO NOT know, Phonte is an incredible artist who a.) is one the best dudes rapping today, “point blank, period” and b.) can sing his black azz off. So honestly, he’s more than qualified to make such an *****essment. His opinion was not a personal attack, it was an honest, intelligent, knowledgeable critique of one artist’s work by another who ain’t “just listening”, but is living, breathing and MAKING exceptional music that dumb n*ggas just ain’t ready for quite yet.

So for those of you who don’t know who this man is, THAT’S who he is. But don’t take my word for it, go listen: Little Brother, Foreign Exchange, Zo & Tigallo. Educate yourselves.

  31. Mandah aka Cranberry Sauce.. when’s it gon be four so i can clock out?

I will youtube them later. But I was convinced there were no females worth listening to. I love Santogold ( hate how they have the nerve to call her soul or r&b) and M.I.A. Try out pandora website when you wanna explore. You’ll be suprised what you find or like. I know that sounds like spam.

  32. Yeah Right

    Actually emmy…

That wasn’t a hit…If you really know about LB, you would know a hit from a cameo…

And I’m so proud of bossip…But at the same time i know bossip would not of even added something with substance without it being aimed and some superficial…

  33. Yeah Right

    @ FURIOUZ STYLEZ

Go sit down some where and read some credits…

Kanye has only jumped on one LB record…Everything else…9th…

The only reason the colab even came down was because of the relationship with 9th Wonder…

  34. emmy

@ yeah right. Umm, this isn’t a trivia contest. I don’t HAVE to know little brother’s life story. I like them, and thats all thats required of me.

Like I said, one of their biggest hits *especially on the mixtape route* was the joint with Kanye.

LOL @ you being the little brother police

  35. Yeah Right

And it amazes me of the all the Kanye d*@# riding is going on…

  36. Yeah Right

    @ emmy

Again…You haven’t listen to much LB if you think it was a hit…Because Kanye was on it? That isn’t the track they are even known for…

    Again…Stop hating…

LOL @ the d*@# riding going on right now…

  37. Mandah aka Cranberry Sauce... is on that Bossip Hating s***** today damnit!

    @sasha
I will youtube them later. But I was convinced there were no females worth listening to. I love Santogold ( hate how they have the nerve to call her soul or r&b) and M.I.A. Try out pandora website when you wanna explore. You’ll be suprised what you find or like. I know that sounds like spam.

gurl i already kno bout them! l.e.s. artistes and star struck are shizes from santo and m.i.a sun showers and galang were thee shizes!

  38. Yeah Right

    But again…

I shouldn’t expect too much substance on here..

We are talking about bossip…And we know what that means…Especially with a majority of the readers…

  39. emmy

LOL defending Kanye makes me a *****rider? I don’t mind being a *****rider to one of the greatest artists of all times.

And because I don’t listen to nonstop Little Brother, I’m all of a sudden not allowed to comment on their songs? LOL okayyyyyyyyyyyy

    Girl, goodnight. LOL

  40. Mandah aka Cranberry Sauce... is on that Bossip Hating s***** today damnit!

    Yeah Right

    But again…

I shouldn’t expect too much substance on here..

We are talking about bossip…And we know what that means…Especially with a majority of the readers…

    ============================
are you also implying that you lack substance? im mean seeing as you are technically a bossip reader as well? ;)

  41. Yeah Right

    @ emmy

Greatest artist of all time? For real? I can understand if you say one of the best in the past 5 or 6 years…But all time?

I need to go, because you all are losing your mind…

    haha…

    A damn shame…

  42. B Dolo

About time somebody in the industry(sorta) said it. That whole project is bull*****. I’m from Chicago too and we all know that ***** is a hustle. I can’t knock Ye cause I know he knows its some bull*****. Keep *****in these *****es as long as you can Yeezy. This will make them live the next (real) album even more.

  43. Well some info on here is funny some of it I regard as a gimmick. I go on gossip sites for info which I then put the info my mind centrifuge system to see all possible reasoning. MOSt importantly I look at others response to see the mindsets of my fellow humans and laugh my ***** of.

  44. Ms. Brilly

I think Phonte has a good point. He’s not really dissing Kanye… he’s basically saying that if Kanye really wants to make a creative leap to singing, the album would’ve been better if Kanye didn’t hide behind the auto-tune.

I don’t think Kanye can sing very well, but I enjoy listening to him try to sing on his previous albums. I too, would’ve liked the album better if he used his natural voice.

  45. Sawyer

Everything…and I mean EVERYTHING Phonte said was on point! Now Phonte (hell the group Little Brother) is real rap/hip hop, listen to his stuff if you doubt that, you’ll instantly turn into a fan. And IMO Phonte can call Kayne out because he feels his art is being transformed into trash. The likes of T-Pain and others killed rap, but Kayne buried it with that atrocity he calls an album. It will take the likes of Phonte, Black Thought, Common and others to bring it back. Now with that said, sure Kanye has the right to make whatever music he wants but to call it rap is a no go!

  46. emmy

@ Miss Brilly…I don’t think the autotune, was a crutch for his bad voice. I think it was a cool effect he wanted to add, hince the whole techo-nu-rave theme to half of the songs. Autotune actually highlights bad notes and drags them out.

oh yeah and one more thing, Kanye = life.

  47. Foreign Exchange – Leave It All Behind >>>>>>>>>> Kanye West – 808’s

    That is all.

  48. Ms. Brilly

    @ emmy

I didn’t say it was a crutch for a bad voice but people have been making techno albums for years without autotune. I think the autotune was unnecessary and detrimental to the quality of his album. I think Kanye’s natural delivery is one of his more unique qualities and I would’ve enjoyed his natural singing (even if it wasn’t great).

  49. PhillyYoungWoman-4-The-Kids

t-pain is enough…no more auto-tune. but i think diddy is coming out with an auto-tune album as well.; which is linked to a blind item on myra penache site : rap & r&b artist working collaborating on an album having t-girl (tranny’s) parties

  50. And for any of you guys who’d like to here auto-tune done to perfection, go treat yourselves to “Girl Blue” by Stevie Wonder on his album “Music of My Mind”. An excellent example of how a good (understatement of the year) singer can use the tool effectively.

  51. brightseat_bully

C’mon, Phontigga. You my man, 50 grand and all (M’boro stand up), but don’t dis Kanye without the right platform. The Ignegros are just gonna come out and say that you’re “hatin on Ye cuz he be gottin mo’ money than you.”
Sure, Kanye’s latest effort sounds like utter trash, but don’t come so hard; he ain’t hurtin *****ody with his current wackness.

  52. ChiTownDrLove

Little Brother is the last of what we have left for real Hip-Hop. I started listening to them a couple of years ago. Phonte has mad skills, 9th Wonder, Nicolay and Mick Boogie laid down some nice tracks for them. Phonte knows Kanye and worked with him on a track called “I See Now” so I wont take this as a diss but constructive criticism.

  53. ChiTownDrLove

For those who aren’t up on LB check out some of the following albums: The Listening, The Chittlin Circuit 1.5 and the Minstrel Show. Hot Shyyyt!!

  54. that one girl

I liked little brother whatever happenend 2 them. And should he really be qulifyed 2 talk about kanye.

  55. Emmy

Miss Brilly, I agree. His delivery is definately what sets him apart as a rapper. I get you.

  56. Candid Canuck

Little Brother! Yay!!!!! Phonte’s one of the best … underrated big time..

  57. SIDEWAYZ

Phonte spits fiyah! Fucc Kanye’s gay ***** attempt to sing.

  58. MH

Im sorry but 808s and Heartbreak is off the chain…and who is this ***** anyway?

  60. Kanye's Rebuttal

Phonte phone home you broke hatin blue black sonofabiotch!

  61. kanYE's ***** BLESSED AND HIGHLY FLAVORED

OH boy what is this hate on Kanye DAY? If so I would like to compliment Mr. West on his latest fashion effort. Those LV shoes are understated and can be worn sporty or dressy. No more being excluded from events because of tennis shoes. I also like that the LV symbol doesn’t outshine the shoe. Phonte didn’t like the album who gives a flying fudge about what he has to say. Kanye liked it, so f**k what YOU thought! *singing* HOW CAN YOU BE SO HEARTLESS!

  62. [...] THIS article to figure out why, it’s not a diss it is just what it is…preach! [...]

  63. huss

Wooooooooord Phonte is on a bossip thread?!?!!!

    Now that’s what’s sup!!!!

Phonte is the truth, he can flow and sing! He would SLAY Kanye in a lyrical battle.

I personally agree w/ Phonte. Kanye did bite Tpain and both them *****gots stole the ***** from Teddy Riley. He broke out w/ the auto tune stuff on his ‘Another Level’ album. Which was FIYA and he didnt use it on every track like that fool pain. Now I’m sure Teddy got it from someone else too. But Te is right on this one.

Anybody ever heard his song call ‘Apologies’

yoooooooooooo thats my ish.. Only real Little Brother fans know about that!

  64. huss

  66. huss

    @ Sawyer

You need to preach!! Where the hell is Black Thought?!
Barack shoulda had him and ‘The Roots’ at the Neighborhood Ball
for a hip hop representation cause Jay-Z was TRASH!! PURE HOT GARBAGE!

    LOVE ME SOME THOUGHT!

  67. 100% cosign with Phonte!! And to anyone unfamiliar with Little Brother or the Justus League please stop listening to the radio that force feeds you the same 10 songs all day and tells you there hits and make a decision on hip hop based on what sounds good and not who makes the most money. Even JayZ said he would rather rap like Talib but he wants money, and most of you younguns prefer ringtone rap! As far as Kanye new album is concerned, from what I’ve heard it does suck. That’s NOT hating, it’s called a difference of opinion. In my opinion its a half azzed attempt at making A Love Below album like 3000, but instead of sounding fresh it just came out lame. There’s a difference in unique talent, and weird crap!

  68. Oh I forgot, much love to Percy Miracles!!!! :)

  69. Ms. Brilly

    lol@ Percy Miracles!!

  70. Imagine More Bounce to the Ounce without a vocoder… He takin it to deep.. It’s kinda messed up that a person can’t even have fun when makin music.. Many elements of music, happy, fun, sad, angry or whatever.. That’s why it’s his album..

  71. Crazy ***** Rodney

    TOO CRAZY : – )

  72. SoooS*****y

yeah the vocoder and all these rap cats singing over it is whack! It’s like they find one thing and everybody gotta beat it into the dam* ground!

  73. Jdub

okay, I don’t particularly care for Kanye’s new album (understatement). However, as much as I like little brother, yall should take a look at the Zo and Tigaloo album cover. This has to be some type of promotional type thing. Not to mention the album is these guys singin and such.

  74. Damn Tay on Bossip – YES!!! He is hands down my fav emcee in the game, and will quite possibly destroy anybody that come’s at him… just listen to DJ Drama’s Gangsta Grillz w/ LB “Boondock Saints”, and you’ll know who Phontigallo is!!!

  75. I am a huge Yeezy supporter and Im from the Chi. I bought every album twice (sans 808s and I still bought one copy of that trash). Chi-Town stand up…But Phonte is right. I support GOOD Music first before anything…and for anybody who dont kno…put Yeezy best verse against Phonte see who comes out on top…it aint who u think. Quantity and Quality r two different things.

  76. EvesDebut

First of Phonte or Funky or whatever you call yourselves, T-Pain did not invent this. This was something done as far back as Stevie Wonder doing “Sesame Street” and also Roger Troutman and Zapp. SO please people stop acting like he came out with this sound. If your going to speak on music then know what your speaking on. And for one so-called musician to publicly bad mouth another is simply “Hateful.”

  77. leepin lizuds

bottom line is. kanye joint was hot. haters will hateee

  78. blackstararia

Kanye’s album is sooooo tired; he is an overrated pompous beat maker and quasi- sufficient lyricist. Any musician worth their salt would not rely entirely on the vocoder to make an entire album (this applies to t-pain as well). Voice training is a tedious process and use of the vocoder denies the listener to hear that person’s individual sound and timbre. Phonte, Pooh, little brother, and foreign exchange are all examples how true musicianship is heavily under valued and how the m*****es (sheep) opt for something that is more comprehensible and less complicated musically and lyrically. I guess the sentiment is why use your brain when you can just listen to the beat? Anyways Phonte’s remarks are warranted, and for all those who believe Kanye’s music is the best of our generation, get on the underground circuit and find some real music, cuz the truth is never popular.

  79. Kwez

Little Brother is the most under rated group I know! Phonte is mad talented that dude can rap and sing. I have all their albums and haven’t been disappointed yet! Kanye has done work with them, he should know what I am talking about. Plus everyone has a right to their own opinion and I ain’t really feelin the new kanye album either.

  80. Addin A CoSign

…from the Bay Area, Cali –

I first heard about these cats (The Listening) on detroitbumps.com, one of the first web sites that made a dude fall in love with internet and underground radio.

I disagree when people say that they are underrated. If that was the case, we wouldn’t be talking about them. Sheeit, maybe they SHOULDN’T get too mainstream – they are legends right where they are.

Bossip would do itself a favor to cover LB and 9th Wonder more often – word.

  81. Addin A CoSign

    “Awww shucks.”

LMAO – haven’t heard that phrase in a long time. That’s the cl*****ic way of saying “once again, it’s ON!”.

    And it’s “Awwwwwwww SHUCKS!”

  82. crazy how many people don’t know phonte or little brother…

stop listening to all that garbage and start listening to hip-hop & not hip-pop

    MAKE SURE TO CHECK OUT:

    - Little Brother
    - 9th Wonder
    - Foreign Exchange

    - Median – how big is your world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this track will change your view on hip-hop

  83. canwepleasestopandreflect

Some people on here need to stop confusing sales with talent.

  84. Czaredd

Ya’ll should check out Kanye and Little Brother’s joint…”I See Now” ….it’s old but still a banger!!!
