I disagree. I’ve been to many of the islands in the Caribbean, was traveling with both light-skinned and dark-skinned sisters. I saw no preference and we were all treated the same by the men. Here in the States, the first thing a “brotha” looks for is the lightest face in a group of women.

The fact is colorism exist in ALL Caribbean countries just as it exist in America, Europe, Asia, and everywhere else. Light skinned people are often favored on an international level, not just in America. Lighter people are often put in more positions of power. Lighter people tend to be more well off. I do agree to the extent that all nations of color are obsessed with this “white is right” notion, but I take exception to the BLACK Caribbean countries. Yes, I’ve been to Barbados as well, and it was a welcome change to not be constantly passed over for my lighter skinned relatives/girlfriends. Again, we were all treated the same in shops, on the beach, on tours, etc. If whites tend to be on top in Barbados, Jamaica, etc., then it’s simply because they’re the descendants of slave owners. These black people in particular do not seem obsessed witih color. If they are, then they do a damned good job of being mature and hiding it – unlike those in the States.

I have to agree that Rihanna has not been the public darling the media has tried making her into. But I think its because America as a whole is getting jaded and tired of people with little talent being made into stars, and of big promises that are never fulfilled.

I may be reading more into this than I should, but the elections are over here. This is a mostly white conservative town and yet Democrats have won overwhelmingly. Beyonce and Alicia Keys are the public darlings. And Rihanna never quite caught on like with the cross cultural appeal of Ciara. For all her baby talk Halle’s movie flopped. Fake gangsta rap is down in sells while other genres of black music are actually seeing increases. The same trend seems to be everywhere; Paris, Nicole and Britney aren’t getting the attention they use to, while Hanna Montanna is selling out concert halls. I think people are just sick and tired of style over substance. The public works hard yet are learning that $100.000 is the new middle class. That means more than 2/3s of all Americans are struggling to get by. America doesn’t resent anyone who deserves success to have it. But I sense a growing outcry against media made celebs who do not seem worthy of the print and film lavished on them.

While Beyonce, Alicia and Ciara are no great vocals they do work hard to put out the best they can. People see them in tours, making movies and learning every aspect of their crafts. From Rihanna we get pics of her new boyfriends or outfits. She seems to take her limited fame for granted and it shows in the manufactured sound of her music.

As for Caribbean women liking white guys. I find that more to be a financial thing. I am in a mostly white town and every Caribbean woman I know has a black man, even though they could easily get white. On many of the islands whites have the money. Here there is no big difference. I don’t see the big deal in who anyone dates.
