A former Louisiana jail worker was arrested Tuesday on charges that she used an inmate’s information on her income taxes. According to the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office, the former jail worker claimed the inmate as a dependent on her taxes.

Tonya Butler, 45, promised an inmate that if she allowed Butler to claim her, she’d be compensated later. Butler allegedly asked the inmate for her date of birth and social security number so that it could be used when filing Butler’s federal tax return.

Butler managed the jail kitchen of the Sheriff’s Office from July 1, 2012, until her resignation on May 13.

The inmate says she felt forced to cooperate since Butler had the authority to remove inmate workers from kitchen assignments.
