Akon who has denied being a polygamist and lies about his age will not be getting married to twenty-three year old model Rachel Ritfeld. The British beauty opens up about not being able to be one of Akon’s wives:
“The reality check really came when Akon told me he had his fifth child with one of his wives. For the first few months I got completely freaked out because even though I knew he had other wives, I never really thought about him being with them because his main attention was always on me – or so I thought. He does not live with his wives but the birth of his latest child made everything become real and made me realize that I would always have to share the man I love while accepting his other relationships. At first I was very supportive but I began to question that if I was taking him into consideration and he was taking his family into consideration, who was taking me into consideration? The answer was ‘nobody’ so I decided I could no longer be apart of Akon’s world.”
“The one thing I wanted from Akon was for him to be monogamous to me but he could not grant me my wish. I thought I could handle the idea of becoming one of his wives in the beginning but who’s to say some other woman he meets won’t capture his heart? I soon realised that he was not the man for me. There were times when I wanted us to share quality time together like ordinary couples do, such as going out to dinner or cuddling up together in front of the TV but it was always impossible. I had to always wait until he had time out of his busy schedule or wait until I had a day-off so I could fly half way around the world to see him. The situation began to become a strain on my heart.”

Education is always the key to breaking the chains of ignorance. Just because you don’t agree with Polygamy doesn’t mean it’s not right or doesn’t work. It works for a lot of people and it really helps going into a relationship with all your cards on the table. A lot of these women condemning Akon are in relationships with men who are sleeping with multiple people and they thinks it’s okay because they don’t know. I am a woman and I can see myself in a polygamous relationship; not because I have low self-esteem or can’t get anyone else (Believe me, I’m very attractive) but because it is what I choose to do. It demands a certain level of maturity and the believe that you don’t own any man. Good luck to Akon and the women who love him. I suggest you watch the show ‘Big Love’ on HBO to see another side of Polygamy. As I’ve said, I recognize that there are some people who practice polygamy, but that doesn’t make it right in mines as well as other people’s eyes. I’m sure some people agree with paganism while others don’t. Neither can judge the morality of each (who is who to deem anything “right” or “wrong”).
In this country, as well as the UK, polygamy is against the law. So, if the law is any kind of moral guideline in its respective country, then polygamy is wrong in this country.
Also, many men who practice polygamy would kill wives who had other “husbands” on the side. The practice of polygamy began for a very different reason that why people today are practicing it.
I suggest you take your own advice and research ploygamy and its origins and compare it to Akon’s alledge situation.

I don’t think it’s a “game” on American women.
There are really some who practice polygamy becasue they are used to the accepted practice of it. If you look at the origin of it, it makes sense, but I think its quite outdated for the modern world (i.e. men don’t need large families to tend their land).
Also, I am a woman who have been played by a Nigerian guy. Haha. But I think it was more so that he was an *****HOLE and not because he was NIGERIAN.

Trust me, I understand Polygamy. My mum’s father had ten wives and she and her siblings get along great, as well as the wives. Even though that was years ago and my husband and I are not practicing it, it’s still always an option. We are American so you don’t have to be African or backwards to believe in it. I’m not sure what you mean by you wouldn’t ‘allow’ your husband to maintain other wives. You don’t own him and he is not a child. Marriage should not be a prison for men where they cannot do anything anymore because they are with a particular wife. A man should have the freedom to admire other women. I am not saying he should sleep with them (unless you agree to it) but he should not have to kill his natural self because he is with you. I have had several of my male friends complain about not even being able to watch certain shows or comment on people because their wives or significant others would fly into a fit of rage. I’m not sure why any man would want to be with a woman like that. I do not control my husband like that and even though we do not practice polygamy because we are not yet there and it’s against the law, I wouldn’t really be offended if he suggested it. Who knows, it might be nice to have other women share in the cooking, cleaning and sexual responsibilities in the marriage. It’s nice to have that option if I want it. I don’t believe it’s my place to condemn anybody for what they believe in as long as it does not cause injury or harm to others.

Years ago, while managing a Bookstore, I had a few Nigerians who frequented the store. Well there you go – 23 is too young to be in a serious relationship. In her case, it was probably a combination of immaturity and Akon’s seizing upon her naivety to his advantage. Like I said: Their games and our games – In this case, Akon’s game was stronger, but not in the case of inherent superiority, but just plain ol’ lifes’ experience. He had more, while she still has the price tag on her.

I think you are talking about a different issue, and that is jealousy and insecurity. I don’t mind if my husband admire other women. I admire handsome men too.

I’ve heard that sentiment expressed by other Africans from different countries. Just last week, I had some cousins visit from Europe and they had told me they would be uncomfortable going to a “black” club with me because Black Americans don’t like them. Secondly, there is no way Akon is married to 5 women! He is a Muslim and in Islam one can’t have more then four wives. So chances are he probably has 2 wives and was going to make miss. thing the 3rd, or he has 3 wives and he was gonna make her the 4th.
Last but not least, Akon is a hypocrate! It’s funny how he only choses to practice the parts of Islam that appeal to him. For startes polygamy in Islam is a choice, not something that is expected of every man. It’s only for those who can afford it financially and are spiritually enlightened enough to treat their wives equally. And I mean equally, if he buys a red t-shirt for one wife and pays five dollars for it, then he must buy that exact red shirt for all the wives and pay five dollars for it. For some reason I doubt Akon, the man who admits to adultery a sin punishable by death in Islam is enligtened enough to follow the rules set aside for polygamy. Another thing that is ironic to me is that he wants to wife a non-muslim woman. I understand where you are coming from and I respect your right to have that opinion. I am Nigerian by birth and I died laughing when I saw you comments about Nigerian men. They are something else and they do know how to make a woman feel special. I think the reason why the relationship b/w Nigerian men and African American women don’t always work is because there are different expectations in a relationship. A Nigerian woman understands that being with a man means you have to do certain things (cook, clean, support, meet his sexual needs, etc) but a lot of African American women feel that they are not obligated to do these things and will only do them if they want to. As a result of this, you will see these men date American women but not always marry them. Alot of them will lie to the American woman about their motives because they are trying to get a green card or stay in the country so women have to be very careful. I do like the way you think, Joe.
