LL Cool J sat down with MTV and took the time to diss and question Jay-Z’s leadership at Def Jam. LL has a problem with Jay not allowing other Def Jam artists shine off of a American Gangster soundtrack.

You all might not like LL but the dude has a good point. Jay should have not taken the Def Jam president position knowing that he still wanted to rap and be in the spotlight and not want to learn the ropes of being a president of huge label while putting in the work thats needed. I think most people don’t get it. Although Jay-Z is one of the greatest rappers of all time he was not groomed or prepared to be the president of Def Jam. It’s just like Michael Jordan most people believe he is the greatest player of all time myself included but as the president of the Wizards he sucked and he sucked because he was not prepaired and he did not put in the same effort being the president as he did on the court. What made Mike Great was he worked his butt off at practice and the off season and it showed on the court, but as the president of the Washington Wizards he spent most of his time not in the office but at home in Chicago. Being great at one thing does not translate to automatically being great at other things.
LL’s right about Jay-Z promoting himself first before other artists but as most people on here mentioned already He’s needs to just leave the label and just do his own thing. One more thing…I thought he was making moves to go with G-Unit. What happened with that??

How is Jay not promoting his artists??? Kanye just got more promotion for his album than I’ve ever seen in my life. The only artists not getting any promo are the artists who can’t sell records.

Black Friday = you said get your facts right. Weezy and TI are the only ones who is selling records outside of Def Jam. 50 cent, Eminem, Kanye West outsells them both all ways and Weezy has only went platinum 1 time. Doing features, remixes, and putting out mixtapes over other artist / producers already established hot songs / beats does not translate to album sales. The only hip hop artist over at Def Jams besides Kanye West by way of Dame Dash and the ROC who is selling any albums is Jeezy. All the artist you mentioned are new artist 90 + percent of them are pop acts. That’s LA Reids influence. Nas last album did around 750,000 give or take a few and the publicity that he is getting now has nothing to do with Jay-Z. It’s what he is planning on calling his album that getting the publicity. The problem with these Jay-Z stans is they have his nuts so far down their throat that they can’t see straight. Any time someone says anything about this dude they fly to his defense. Let see what excuse they make when his album does 200,000 less than 50 cents and 500,000 less than Kanye first week. Jay – Z needs to decide if he wants to be president or if he would rather keep rapping.

Thanks for putting the numbers out for the folks who just want take LL words for gospel. When the game changed from cat and hat rhymes LL couldn’t keep up. Truthfully dude has sucked for the past 15 years. I am a female and I haven’t had a an LL album since “Walk like a Panther” if that was the title. The point he sucks…and blaming Jay for his lack of albums isn’t going to make him sell more.
The only artists complaining are the ones who didn’t sell. You can promote ***** all day but because we all know how it smells….who the hell is going to buy it?

I know folks think LL is being a lil gurl about it, but dude has a point. I don’t like the idea of artist running these labels. Maybe bossip should look for chris rock’s quote about music today, if dey didn’t post it already….dat would be the quote of the day.
LL needs to realize that labels are not pushing hip-hop like its the early 90’s bc its a diminishing return on their investment. Rap artist today have to hustle up their own promotion and not rely on labels. Jay-z piggy-backed on the AG movie hype and probably spent minimal in promotion. 50 and Kanye started a fake referenum on conscious vs. gangsta rap and had media outlets like CNN discussing their albums for free. TI partners with crysler and promotes his music in commercials. All this is done outside of label financial support. I think LL sorta understands this and is trying to go the beef route–only problem is he is not relevant enough for people to care who he’s mad at.
I feel a little bad for LL because he keeps cryin about the problem….and no one seems to be listening. But I don’t think it is all Jay-z fault either. Jigga is not the ONLY one making decisions at Def Jam

Nas last album did not go platinum. Hip Hop is dead sold under 800,000. Neyo for what is worth is currently not platinum and how long has his album been out. Ri Ri is not platinum and how long has her album been out. Rick Ross had one of the biggest hits of of 06 and only went Gold. Check billboard sound scan. Kim = I agree with that. Music across the board is down but you can’t sit here and tell me that Jay – Z is doing a great job as president of Def Jam. Like LL said why not make American Gangster a compilation album for all of Def Jam acts even with Jays music included. Also LL stated in the time he has been waiting to release 1 album Jay has already jumped in front of him and everyone else and released two album. Also Method Man and Redman, DMX, Joe Buddens, Teirra Marie, almost all of state property, and many others also complained about Jay Z tactics as president but none of the Jay Z groupies will acknowledge that. I a have question what ever happened to all the artist that were on Roc a Fella. Were they all whack? Did they all fall off? Now I am not the biggest fan of Dame Dash but you have to give the man a little credit because the only one doing anything of relevance right now that’s left over from Roc a Fella era is Kanye West hip hop wise besides Jay and Kanye West could sign to Disney and still have a nice following at this point. If Jay figures LL is whack he could have left LL off of the American Gangster album and put most of the other acts on and then LL would not have a point. The point that LL was making is that Jay has all of these great ideals how to cut promotional cost but he uses them on his projects instead of using them on the other artist projects a Def Jam. Pease do not get me wrong. Jay – Z is a great rapper and a brilliant business man so the question is why doesn’t he use some of the business IQ in promoting some of Def Jam other hip hop acts. I agree that we are in a different environment in today music with the internet, free downloading, mp3 players, but the Jay Z stans are so mesmerized at by him musically and by his past accomplishments that they will not hear LL out. They just automatically jump on his case because they feel he is whack / old and bitter but if you listen to what the man says he does have a point. Now on the other hand if I am Jay business wise I would not put a lot money behind projects that I believe will not do well, but I will find creative ways to market and promote those projects like a Kanye vs 50, or a Nas naming his album controversial titles, or a TI using Chevy commercials or even a Jay Z using a movie or a Budweiser commercial to promote. I will say this LL has to hold himself some what accountable to and he has to find other ways to promote his upcoming projects as well because the old way of doing business no longer works in today’s climate. By the way I know there are a lot of you who say LL is whack but even if you like him or not every album he has put out with the exception of the last one went either Gold or platinum so the man still has a fan base. Although 95 percent of them may wear high heels or being in their late 20 early or late thirties but the guy still has a fan base. I am not really one of them but I still see the LL’s point.

If you were in this situation regardless of what was going on your boss has a responsibility to you as well you have one to them. You job as a leader is to make those around you better and that hasn’t happened. Why is that others have been pushed back but yet this guy puts out two cds in two years. reality: 8/10 artist do next to nothing promoting themselves. promo, publicity, marketing are part of the recoupables a label gets along with advances. each dept. gets a budget and have to justify and report their performance. you, the artist, can’t depend on just a substantial fraction of a loan to sell a record.
reality: groups in the past sometimes never saw the mechanicals of their multi plat albums until after 5 years. touring and shows pay the bills. as does placements in commercial, tv and film, etc
reality: sales are down which mean you have to do more as an artist.
sidenote: when busta barely sold anything where were the calls for dre and jimmy’s head. how many artist have flopped at interscope, shady, aftermath (do they even count), etc.

The point I think Black Friday is trying to make is that the same thing is going on with other labels and those executives are not getting the same scrutiny even def Jam is doing better then most others.
