I don’t think anyone is playing “God” or saying that certain situations don’t occur. But there comes a point when we all have to examine our flaws and how certain traits impact our lives and those around us. I happen to think that having a series of children by different men is an avoidable situation — especially for, as I said before, a grown woman who should know better.

I think some (emphasis on “some”) sisters subconsciously believe that a real commitment is something beyond their reach or they are somehow undeserving, so they settle and engage in unhealthy behaviors. I’m not making an excuse, I’m simply stating that it’s not a good example to use for single motherhood b/c she actually did make the effort to marry both fathers of her children. It’s not about documentation, the documentation is nothing but a mere symbol of two people’s efforts to have stability. If it doesn’t work out then that’s just life, but it’s important to show some type of commitment to something in life which is morally sound.

Girl I totally understand. My mom would not divorce b/c she felt as though “marriage” is for life. My dad never cheated or hit her but he was an alcoholic and a drug addict. I know if she had only just had the power to leave it would have been a lot better for us! We lost out on two parents b/c dad was either drunk or high and mom was always upset because he was drunk or high. And of course the marriage didn’t start out that way. But when do you just say enough is enough. Oh I know…. some vow in a book written by a man told you to stay no matter what! Till death do us part is not always the way! My father passed on due to his addictions and I feel like for the first time in a LONG time my mom knows what it is like to be free and love herself! And it took death to give that to her? In no way do I feel joy over my father’s death but I must admit even through the grief I see a different mom that I never ever got to see when he was here! But that is marriage for you! On the subject of suicide and mental illness, as I wrote before, I do believe that there are some sisters and brothers who are suffering from a form of mental illness, but have not been diagnosed nor are receiving the proper treatment.

I believe there are different forms of suicidal thought. To me, a person who doesn’t care about his own safety (or that of those around him), engages in life-threatening behavior, and if arrested or confronted, says he doesn’t care if he lives or dies, is showing signs of a serious internal issue.

I think there are also those among us who are depressed and exhibit that depression as intense anger and self-alienation.

When I was younger, I did not want to marry or have childen. I thought that it was waste of time…I wanted to pursue my career and get myself together before I even thought about being with anyone. I took my time, growing up..I didn;t have the distractions, that you all have now..computers were just starting, there was no email, fax or text messaging..things now-a-days come too fast, along with people’s sense of entitlement. I used to love comedy shows, plays, observatories, museums, traveling, single cruises, discovering new things..I made a list, alomst like the one I had before college. On that list, were all the things that I wanted to accomplish, within the next 5 years. No man was on the list. I finished school and started various business and investments. I met hubby through school , he didn’t finish, due to his cash situation, at the time. I did, though, We took it slow. I really wasn’ looking for a relationship. I just wanted to pay off my Stafford loans andbuy some real estate…he came along when I wasn’t looking or planning for him…even after he proposed, I didn’t want to marry,I thought that he would change, and start acting up…I made him wait 7-8 years before I would do it. I wanted to really KNOW him. Not just on good days. Not just whn things are going well, I wanted to know what made him tick..Plus, he wasn’t from here, he had an accent…Soon as I found out that he wasn’t seeing anyone, that I need to be concerned about I still took my time…(Good things take time, you can’t rush it) He never left my side. I thought abuot making him sign a pre-nuptial. I thought about all the stuff we went through. I didn’t have him sign anything. We are still together, to this day. I can say I know this because he is home, every night except when we travel, or I want to get away, alone…He’s everything I could’ve ever dreamed of and the best part, is he’s my best friend.
