I actually defended and agreed with Oprah’s decision not to have misogynistic rappers on her show. However, the same rule should apply to everyone. How is it that highly paid actresses like Julia Roberts have managed to have long lasting acting careers without degrading themselves to the extent that Halle did. Monsters Ball, had some people not been so upset that Halle’s character had sex with Billy Bob Thornton’s character, you would realize one thing. Yeah the sex scene was raunchy and very emotional but she lost everything and did not seem to have anyone else. Mom, dad, etc. She had a man in prison, her son was killed run over on the side of a dark road (and let’s not forget that her son hoarded food- that is an alarm right there). No one helped her. It was about lost and grief. It was about letting emotions and their consequences run there course. Thornton’s character lost his son to suicide, another big alarm. But all the things that the movie chose to address and you focus on the sex scene. No wonder we all run in place and get no where. It is about the fact that the most unlikely people can find each other and that people will change. There was a message and lots of food for thought in that movie, agree or disagree with the actors and their actions. This unstated rule that Black men have some ownership over Black women has got to stop. I am not going to get upset about the beauty/skin color thing because that is another topic for another forum. People we need to wake up and realize that we have dug ourselves a deep hole. All by ourselves. We owe each other so much. We owe both those that are here and now and our future something.
