Lol if you have learned anything from that ok performance of Etta in Cadillac Records, you should have learned that Etta is very outspoken and have always been known to not hold her tongue for anyone. Matter a fact when they first said that Beyonce was playing her she said she didn’t agree with it, but obviously money talks and Mathew bought the rights for Beyonce to play her. Now the movie has come and gone so Beyonce needs to let that song do the same because she does it no justice. Etta still sells out stadiums for that song alone.

Beyonce did no ustice for the song, but to handle your displeasure for it in this venue was tacky for Ms. James. I’d like to know where she’s lives since Obama is not “HER PRESIDENT”?

3. I listened to both versions and I think Beyonce sang it better. End of story.

Beyonce was wrong to sing SOMEONE elses song. If you do not have an appropriate song in your music library then you don’t go singing someone elses song to further yourself. That was the ONLY problem I had with Bey being chosen was that NONE of her music was appropriate for the occassion, and she went all over town speaking about how the Obama girls liked her – YEA when she was with Destiny Child – but not as a single artist, where she has chosen to sell her soul to the devil for success.

Etta could have chosen a better forum to speak on the issue but then you have to know Etta to understand why she spoke out like she did. It would have been more appropriate for Etta to sing her own song, if applicable or for an artist with ‘usable’ music to have been chosen. The problem with what Bey is doing is that she is ‘pissing’ off all the legends she ‘hopes’ to become – Aretha – Etta, etc. What is MOST SAD is that Etta’s words about Bey using her song will be what is MOST REMEMBERED about that event and not whether or not Bey performed it well – afterall, it wasn’t Bey’s song!

Initially they were just going to let her perform at the We Are One Concert with the other “pop stars”, and reserved the serenade for a real “legend”. I was really upset that Beyonce played Etta in the movie because I didn’t feel she had the substance, the strength of character or the backbone of an Etta James. Someone like Jennifer Hudson could have knocked it out. Beyonce is a “pop” performer and some of her music I do like, but she’s seriously lacking substance to play these strong women roles they keep trying to cast her in. Just because she’s the big star of the day doesn’t mean she necessarily has what it takes. She’s just a pop star. Fast forward 20+ years, is she really gonna be able to do a movie version? Heck no!! First of all, who really has a text war about people who do not even figure into everyday (Beyonce and Etta could give a damn about us and this blog).Give your opinion, but don’t get extra with sh*t that really doesn’t matter.

Anyway, I am very sorry to hear that Ms. James does not recognize Obama as her president because that is the same as denouncing yourself because he represents an “At Last” moment for all of us as African Americans. I don’t know about you ma’am but I have become a better interpretation of myself because of Obama and the sense of belonging I have now because of what “WE DID”.

The song was beautifully done and appropriate, but I too questioned the absence of the woman who made it famous. Owning a song is not necessarily in the creation, but also in the delivery, definition and sincerity. I think the coordinator of the ball dropped the ball on the chance to really leave an impact on viewers and attendees.

I try not to be a hater but, I am really over Beyonce, she has systematically messed over sistahs in the entertainment business from the jump and that is a disgrace. You can be a warm and kind person and be a star that is evidenced by the fame of Halle, Angela,Jennifer Hudson and many others. I am really over J-Lo, Puffy and other meglomaniacs too but…I digress, the real issue here is the forum in which Ms James decided to deliver her opinion. Next time call B on the phone and don’t just put her on blast, educate her and put her on notice. Etta James came from some pretty bad stuff and overcame, now is not the time to pedal backwards but “children live what they learn” so let there be a lesson in all of this.

This is a moment of poor judgement on everyone’s part because we should be thinking more unity and less “ME”, they should have performed together. How momentous would that have been for a “diva” from the Civil Rights era to share the stage with a “diva” in the age of change?

Etta’s voice is contralto and Beyonce’s voice is soprano. It’s all a matter of personal preference. The only contralto voice I really like is Alicia Keys. I prefer Beyonce’s rendition of “At Last.” JMHO

Co-sign. Beyonce is DYING to be included with the likes of Ms. Ross, Aretha, Etta, Patti, etc… IMO, I think they see her as a joke and an opportunist. Yes, she’s pretty and can shake her ass, however, that alone does not put her in the same league as these women.

There’s this unspoken word in the music industry concerning pop stars and other genres. Pop stars are manufactured “performers” (like circus acts who are trained to perform)–that’s Beyonce, Britney, JLo, Janet, etc.. Whereas RnB, country, and other genres are “artist” (they have natural born talents).

Real RnB singers from back in the day went through HELL to make RnB acceptable for mainstream. If you were able to gain national acclaim by sticking to your RnB roots, without “selling out” or succumbing to the “chitlin circuit”, you have truly made it and you became a legend. Women like Aretha, and Etta, worked too hard and made too many sacrifies for people like Beyonce to come along and cheapen their work as a “pop star”, and ESPECIALLY for not giving them credit where credit is due (Etta should slap the shit out Beyonce). At the very least, she should have acknowledged Etta James at the inauguration. These women were true to their art and their cause. The only thing Beyonce is true to is the dollar bill. She’s not true to her music or herself, because she’s all over the place. One minute she wants to match wits with RnB legends, the next she’s trying to cross-over into the latino market, or she’s making rock songs (i.e. If I Were a Boy). She needs to find her lane and stay in it.

That’s the part I didn’t get. Etta recounted many incidents in her life going through Jim Crow, just 4 her 2 say “he’s not my President?”

This world is a selfish and deceitful one. I feel that it is important to never venture through life’s journeys wearing rose-colored glasses. I could not relate more to this particularly philosophy in this past week than I have in my life.

For obvious, I am withholding my identity. Nevertheless, what I am speaking of is a first-hand account and without of shadow of a doubt a testament to greed and “modest corruption” so to speak.

I was honored to have the opportunity to work on the committee of one of the most historical events in a lifetime. I was not head of a certain planning groups but I was one of the many aids. Now I am heading back to school to finish my masters. With that said, on the day of January 13, a call was placed to my supervisor by the name of *******. It was from non other than Music World Entertainment. I know this undoubtedly because I answered the phone and transferred the call to *******. I am 100% sure it was Mr. Matthew Knowles, because that is what was said after I said may I ask who’s calling.

Instead of going back into her office, ******* took the phone right there in front of my colleagues and I. After exchanging greetings, she said and I quote, “We are currently going through several performers for the dance, but nothing is written in stone as of yet…..How much…Are you serious?” She walked into her office and closed the door shut. Shutting her office door is something ******* never does. Never. Never. I can not stress that enough. The woman always has her door open. Moreover, none of the performers were paid to perform. So I know she was not asking how much does the committee have to pay for Beyonce to perform. Mr. Knowles offered her an undisclosed amount of money to finalized Beyonce as the performer for the first dance. Common sense right?

Anyone with a brain would automatically revert to a notion that money matters. This world is a selfish and deceitful one. I feel that it is important to never venture through life’s journeys wearing rose-colored glasses. I could not relate more to this particularly philosophy in this past week than I have in my life.

For obvious, I am withholding my identity. Nevertheless, what I am speaking of is a first-hand account and without of shadow of a doubt a testament to greed and “modest corruption” so to speak.

I was honored to have the opportunity to work on the committee of one of the most historical events in a lifetime. I was not head of a certain planning groups but I was one of the many aids. Now I am heading back to school to finish my masters. With that said, on the day of January 13, a call was placed to my supervisor by the name of *******. It was from non other than Music World Entertainment. I know this undoubtedly because I answered the phone and transferred the call to *******. I am 100% sure it was Mr. Matthew Knowles, because that is what was said after I said may I ask who’s calling.

Instead of going back into her office, ******* took the phone right there in front of my colleagues and I. After exchanging greetings, she said and I quote, “We are currently going through several performers for the dance, but nothing is written in stone as of yet…..How much…Are you serious?” She walked into her office and closed the door shut. Shutting her office door is something ******* never does. Never. Never. I can not stress that enough. The woman always has her door open. Moreover, none of the performers were paid to perform. So I know she was not asking how much does the committee have to pay for Beyonce to perform. Mr. Knowles offered her an undisclosed amount of money to finalized Beyonce as the performer for the first dance. Common sense right?

Anyone with a brain would automatically revert to a notion that money matters. Ok, for one Kobe IS “arrogant.” As all good athletes are and should be. If you don’t have supreme confidence in yourself than you shouldn’t be in the league.
