RIP DondaWestKanye West

More details are coming in on the tragic death of Kanye West’s mom, Dr. Donda West.

A plastic surgeon refused to perform plastic surgery on Dr. Donda West because he thought there was a risk of a heart attack. Dr. Andre Abolian told her she needed to get clearance from an internist but Dr. West went ahead with a tummy tuck and breast reduction without the co-sign from the internist according to TMZ.

The fire department was called to Donda West’s home after a 911 call:

A hospital spokesperson tells TMZ that an unresponsive West was brought to their ER around 8:00 PM Saturday night. They attempted to resuscitate her, but were unsuccessful. She was pronounced dead around 8:30 PM that night.

Our prayers and best wishes are with the West fam.

Really sad for Ye. Only a few hip hop artist hung with Mom in public and on stage. Tupac and Biggie being other examples. It says a lot about Ye and the man he is. Condolences.

    This is so sadd.

  • http://yahoo.com elicious34

Damn! That is sooooo sad. What’s even worse is that she was a very intelligent and educated sister who made a poor choice. I’m just glad she was alive to help her son get thru his tradgedy with his car accident and alive long enough to see him achieve greatness. RIP Dr.Donde West!!!!

    i agree with you 1trudiva

  • wdstk

I agree, please consider deleting some of the comments. I’ll never ask you for nothing again.

  • http://whoseamerica.blogspot.com/ whoseamerica

Please stop with the ignorant statements. Poor body image is not reserved for the young and it blinds people. The Manhattan Eye and Ear Infirmary cases (the author of First Wives Club and the wife of the doctor shortly after) involved intelligent women with seemingly great lives. Obviously, if you feel badly enough about your body, you sometimes make less than advisable decisions. Even if you watch Dr. 90210 regularly, you’ll see people who lie about their health or prior surgeries because they desperately want the work done. Don’t be judgmental unless you’ve dealt with these issues.

    @Love

If ignoring your Doctor’s advice about is Sexist/racist.

This is the consequence of poor judgement, pretending it did not happen will not make it go away.

  • BlackWomenJustDontListen

Correction-If commenting about ignoring your Doctor’s advice about unnecessary surgery is Sexist/racist, then that I am.

i feel bad 4 kanye and the entire family and i am VERY SADDENED by the untimely death of Dr. Donda West. at the same time she SHOULD HAVE LISTENED to the DOCTOR. hes not saying that for his health, he was obviously right and she should have gotten cleared before such a surgery. surgeons deal w/ this all the time with patients never fully telling them their health backgrounds because they want to have sum specific surgery.

REGARDLESS i wish this didnt happen to her or anyone

    DR. DONDA WEST….REST IN PEACE

  • DANA

i never understood how and why people go against doctors reccomendations (as far as cosmetic surgury) it’s not like it’s every day a cosmetic surgon tells a patient “no”, so i feel like she should have had huge “red flags” going off in her head! i would have! i feel bad for kanye but his mom made a deadly dicision. poeple dont really think about the consequences sometimes. i’m sure she thought she’d be “o.k.” me personally, i get nervous at the thought of “going under” for anything, so i just cant understand a persons state of mind who will risk going under and never awakening for something cosmetic! the only time i’m gettin g cut open or put under is if it’s gonna save my life or the life of my unborn child!

  • http://www.myspace.com/drgoddessarts Dr. Goddess

    RIP Dr. West.

There is no need to be disrespectful to her or her family. It’s precisely because of the disgust I had for the industry in pressuring people to look like “Barbie”, that I wrote the poem, “Extreme Makeover”. It has become a favorite on the poetry circuit because sisters (and brothers) can relate. We have all wanted a little nip or tuck because of this constant mass-marketing that we are never “good enough”. You can see a clip of it at http://www.myspace.com/drgoddessarts

    RIP Dr. West . . .

  • baby g

Your comments are so wacked! Someone died and who’s to say we got the whole story. As far as black women dont listen…most women the opt for plastic surgeries are white.

  • Marquella

    Die….t!

    No shortcuts.

  • wdstk

This morning Ricky Smiley suggested that we pray for Kanye and I did. An unexpected death is hard to deal with, but I can’t imagine going though it in public.

  • Marquella

Do you pray for the families of the deceased in your newspapers obituary?

  • http://www.lovingmeans@aol.com 1TruDiva w/The PlatinumVocals

    @ Marquella–

I’m not even going to dignify that comment with a reply.

  • wdstk

No I dont pray for families of the deceased in the newspaper obits, and I’m not a big Kanye fan. But I was touched by this news (my mother says I’m tenderhearted) and I just dont understand cruel people like you.

    Thanks, girl!

    I’m Free – POEM

Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free,

I’m following paths God made for me.

I took his hand, I heard him call…

Then turned and bid farewell to all.

I could not stay another day.

To laugh, to love, to sing, to play.

Tasks left undone must stay that way.

I found my peace…at close of day.

And if my parting left a void

Then fill it with remembered joy.

    A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss,

Ah yes, these things I too will miss.

Be not burdened … deep with sorrow

I wish you sunshine of tomorrow.

My life’s been full … I’ve savoured much.

Good friends, good times … and a loved one’s touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief

Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief.

Lift up your heart and share with me,

God wants me now … he has set me free

I said it before and I’ll say it again– No matter how a person goes–the pain is still great for their loved ones. We can go on all day everday speculating on the what ifs but–the creator had it in his plans. We do not know the minute nor the hour….

To lose a parent is the worst heartbreak ever. I hope Kanye can find peace in knowing that she is at peace. As sad as this is I hope there can be a lesson learned from this tragedy. When you accept and love yourself there is nothing about you that you want to change. I know we all have our little obsessions with our hair our waist our behinds, but for most of us surgery is just s dream away not a dr.’s visit. She was an attractive middle aged woman and she wore her weight well. Her weight looked good on her. I feel so bad for him, because there is going to be a lot of backlasjh about her decision when she was warned. but God knows who he wants to come home and when he calls we answer. We all get here the same way bit we never know how we are going to leave.take care and God bless Kanye

  • Observatrice

Many are questioning why she didn’t listen to the doctors. Perhaps it was the fault of the hospital. It appears she was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. Why was she even released from the hospital in the first place? These hospitals are way too willing to discharge people before they are ready. Well, we must wait for the full investigation — it could have even been that superbug going around. Prayers for the West family.

  • Van

This is very sad. It’s a terrible thing to lose your mother. It’s like–you are losing yourself. May God strengthen him and the other family members.

  • nahnah

damn, that really sucks. i’m not a kanye fan, but they played that ‘hey mama’ song on the radio today, and i got all misty eyed, as i didn’t realized how much of a powerful song this is.

i couldn’t imagine losing my mother right now. and i couldn’t imagine my little brothers and sisters, who are so close to her losing her. so i seriously feel the pain.

on a side not, people let’s be content with ourselves no matter what we look like! if we feel we need to make a change, let’s do it the safe and natural way.

    peace!

I can’t imagine the grief that Kanye is going through. I met him over the summer and he was very nice to me. Condolenses to him and his family. I lost my mom when she was very young to Cancer and it’s a terrible tragedy to lose a parent. It’s something that you will never get over, especially if it’s unexpected. To the people on this blog who are blaming his mother, it’s very disrespectful and uncalled for. How would you feel if that was your mother? Show Kanye and his family some respect.

  • Amani

I give Kanye West mad respect because that is one man who loved and respected his mother to the fullest. In my eyes that is a sign of a good man and loving man. RIP Ms. West you will be missed.

Please spare us all the ignorance. Know the saying “if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all”? Well it applies in cases such as this.

It’s disrespectful to come on here and spew your hatred. Even when people I loathe die (Reagan and such), I know to keep my mouth shut because I don’t have anything nice to say. Nothing wrong with not liking everyone. Just know there are times when you keep your thoughts to yourself, even if you have the anonymity of the internet to protect you from scorn.

  • petitedelight

Hey Marquella had a good point. Do we pray for families who lost a love one in local orbituaries? Most likely, no, but I will still pray for the West family and friends.

  • http://tahirah@hotmail.com MzTee

    1. My prayers goes out to Kanye and the West Family. 2. Not until I read thru these post did I know there were so many hurting people in this world, my prayers go out to you as well. To speak so cruelly about such a positive woman speaks volumes about who you are. A man lost mother who, no matter what, stood by his side. Its obvious you’ve never experienced that kind of love cause if you had you would have more compassion. More parents should love their kids that way. Maybe there would be less hate. Its ok to have your opinion, but to me having class is more important!!!

Marquella, that poem you wrote was ignorant and insensitive.

Dr. West has done nothing wrong, and is deserving of no hatred or ridicule for the ‘crime’ of dying after a surgery. Anybody can die at any time… surgery is not and never will be a joke. I hope, with many, that this is a wake up call about the seriousness of ANY procedure.

  • hello

Sorry for his loss of mother! He is very unlucky these days! He is single now! His profile was found on WealthyRomance.com last week! Good luck to him!

Just some facts about getting a tummy tuck vs. dieting and exercise:

The difference between the two is elastisity (sp) in the skin. If you had children later in life or if you were heavy and lost weight, that skin does NOT return to its pre-baby or pre-heavy self.

This means that no matter how many crunches, bridges, leg lifts one does, the SKIN is still there – because it is just SKIN, NO MUSCLE.

It is because of this that a tummy tuck is the solution to a flat stomach.

  • Onestep

    Shoog,

If her doctor would not perform the surgery until she got clearance and failed to do so, it is her fault.

  • Just Sit And Be Pretty

Interesting posts. Whether Kanye reads this blog or not, I think that for anyone who’s lost a parent (myself included)…or anyone who has a heart, expressing condolences is humane. To those posting negative or insensitive remarks, what can you do? We’re all entitled to the 1st Amendment…it just speaks volumes about some of your characters.

I do think that while we can express our sympathy/empathy for the West family, we can also use this blog to open dialogue about the fact that more and more African Americans are electing to undergo cosmetic surgery…and might be more vulnerable to risks than others.

On that note, about Marquella’s poem, I found it a bit intriguing on a few levels…and thought while it could, at this time, appear harsh, she made some salient points.

Black women are increasing going “under the knife” for various reasons. Many of us are professional and can afford it, it plays into our desire to be “beautiful”, some do it for health-related reasons and on and on it goes. However, since there are risks associated with these surgeries, we need to really pause and reconsider the potential outcomes. We all know that we top the list when it comes to obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, etc. These are all conditions that can make invasive surgery even more difficult and/or risky. To that end, I think that if more of us prescribe to doing the work…eating healthy, turning away from the fattening foods and begin to exercise more, we’ll lessen the desire to go the path of least resistance…and not prematurely put ourselves at death’s door.

    Just my two cents.

The mans mother has passed….some people are just plain rude and out to draw attention. I understand that everybody is entitled to his/her own opinion, but have a heart people. Ye has to be going through a lot right now. As someone mentioned above, he dedicated EVERYTHING to her. Everybody makes mistakes and her choosing to go under the knife was a big one. That does not mean you have to bash her. Let her rest in peace and show that man and his mother some respect.

Now is NOT the time to discuss this…..there will be plenty of time later for the wouldas, couldas and shouldas.

Good Manners on a gossip blog?

    That doesnt even make sense.

What is the time period that people should wait before they comment on the situation? 1 week, 1month, a year? She wont get any deader! At the end of the day, she was just someones mother. Plenty of other mothers on this site get trashed. No one thinks about how their kids will feel.

  • kdogg

And I dont see where anyone is trashing her. They are saying that she should have listened to her doctor, or just dieted and excercised. Thats not hate, thats the truth. Would I say that to the family personally? No “I” wouldnt but on a gossip website, any subject appears to be fair game. Everyone we talk about on this site is sombody’s loved one. Remember that people before you start picking favorites.

  • Just Sit And Be Pretty

Thanks Lisa. And least anymore misunderstand, I am in no way bashing his mother nor her decision. It’s like crying over spilt milk…what done is done. What I’m interested in is the greater message or the greater impact that this tragic loss can affect.

And Al-Anon, I think you can still discuss the surrounding events or the potential cause of death without being disrespectful. Most people have already conveyed condolences…this is a blog site, do you suggest instituting a mourning period where nothing else can be discussed until an elected date?

Man, death is so sad and sudden. People always say, “he or shes in a better place now” or “It was their time to go” but has anyone grasped the true effect of death? That person is GONE forever never to hug you, kiss you, laugh with you, console you or just be in your surroundings again. Death is never easy. It hurts! Its true pain! No amount of physical pain could ever top the amount of emotional turmoil you experience when you lose someone. Period Love u Kanye~Hang on Baby. I Heart You Ms. West

  • Nonameneeded

Kanye is a horrible person. I interned for his label and he is a very sexist, self-centered man. I think that he needed his mother to snap back to reality and help him realize that we are all equal, all God’s children, and money and fame do not change that! Unfortunately it looks like his mother got way to caught up in Hollywood as well. I feel sorry for him but there are many people in this world going through much worse and not receiving any condolence or recognition for their struggles.

This is just the comment section on one of thousands of gossip blogs. My comment on Kanye being an evil person is not hurting anyone! I would not send this to his family or say this to them at the funeral. If you really want to send your condolences don’t do it here. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Dr. West’s name to the Kanye West Foundation/Loop Dreams Teacher Training Institute. Those donations can be made by visiting the Foundation’s Web site, http://www.KanyeWestFoundation.org or by mail at Kanye West Foundation, 8560 W. Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, CA 90069. ”

  • http://www.IStayConfused.com I Stay SMH

Jan Adams is the Beverly Hills plastic surgeon that performed on Donda West before she died.

The shady doc has been sued for malpractice before and lost! TWICE!

In August of 2001 he was ordered to pay $250,000 in one claim.

In September of 2001, he was ordered to pay $217,337 in another malpractice judgment.

Additionally, Dr. Adams has been arrested for DUI. Twice!!!

On March 31, 2006, he was arrested for blowing a .10 blood alcohol level during two breath analyzer tests and putting him over the legal limit. The case went to trial and Adams was found guilty of driving with a blood alcohol level of .08 percent or greater. He was sentenced to 96 hours in L.A. County jail, had to enroll in an alcohol treatment and counseling program and attend 60 AA meetings and five years probation, the papers state.

In 2003, he plead guilty to driving under the influence and was placed on three years probation, which included a three-month first offender alcohol and drug education and counseling program and restricted him from driving anywhere but to and from work for 90 days.

As if all that weren’t bad enough, in April of this year, the Executive Director of the California Medical Board asked the state to consider revoking or suspending Adams’ physician and surgeon’s certificate.

On Monday, Adams claims he did nothing wrong in relation to the death of Donda West.

    We’ll see about that!!!

Let’s just hope that he has positive people in his corner who can help him through his time of need. Clearly, ordinary people don’t care.

^^^^ Yeah I read that over at TMZ as well. If anyone cares, after being advised not to get the procedure done by Dr. Abolian Dr. West went and found another one (Dr. Jan Adams I think) who was willing to do it. The man is not even licensed by the American Medical Association Board of Plastic Surgeons. The man took 8 hours to do the procedure – about 2x longer than the actual procedure should take. Others in the medical profession are speculating that that indicates that something went wrong on the operating table or the doc was inexperienced. Can you imagine how much blood she probably lost after being in surgery for 8 hours? Dr. Adams needs to have his license revoked and serve at least 25 to life in a state penitentiary.

No matter what type of medical procedure you are going to do it is always wise to investigate your physician, if it is at all possible. Some doctors barely graduate from medical school and get certified by the skin of their teeth. Others are greedy and for the love of $$$ agree to undertake medical procedures that they are not licensed to do. Some are just downright shady and will let you leave knowing that there is something wrong with you but won’t tell you. Trust me I know.

RIP Dr. West and my prayers go out to Kanye and his family.
