5 Celebrities Who Got Their Life After Hitting Rock Bottom
In Hollyweird, the bigger you are the harder you fall. And most times, once someone falls they don’t get back up again, much less achieve new-found fame. Fortunately, that’s not the case for these celebs who became major successes, then fell into some ridculousness, and then somehow, as Tamar Braxton would say, got their life and found themselves right back on top again.
Samuel L.Jackson
When Samuel was playing that addict in “Jungle Fever” he wasn’t exactly portraying an unfamiliar role. Right before landing the part, Samuel had just completed treatment at a New York rehab facility after overdosing on heroine several times and developing a coke habit. Today, all of that is behind him as he’s currently the highest-grossing actor of all time.
Drew Barrymore
Drew Barrymore’s childhood was in a word: tragic. A regular at the famed Studio 54, Drew started smoking cigarettes at age 9, drinking alcohol by 11, smoking kush at 12, snorting at 13, and was in rehab at 14. A suicide attempt and a couple of nekkid magazine covers followed in the years after, but by 1995, Drew had reclaimed her image — along with top movie roles in “Boys on the Side” and “Batman Forever” — to become the highly bankable box office draw we know her as today.
Nicole Richie
Leaving Kimmi Cakes alone isn’t the only upgrade Nicole Richie made to her life. The adopted daughter of Lionel Richie also said goodbye to the Hollywierd nightclubs and party girl drug lifestyle that went along with being the daughter of a famous singer and decided to focus on building her own fortune rather than falling victim to the reality TV empire. Nicole now has her own clothing line, House of Harlow, and a Macy’s collection and is a happily married mother of two.
Kelly Rowland
You heard “Dirty Laundry” right? An abusive ex, solo album flops, skin color issues, getting booted from “X Factor” — Kelly Rowland’s life post- Destiny’s Child hasn’t been all that great, but this year ol’ girl has been winning. After slaying on more than one red carpet during award season, we have seen Kelly everywhere — Essence magazine, BET’s Rip the Runway, she’s even coming to the “X Factor” in the U.S. In 2013, she’s finally established a successful career outside of Bey Bey.
Whoopi Goldberg
Looking at Whoopi on “The View,” you’d never know she was a self-described “high functioning” drug addict years ago. But as is the case, the entertainer used to be on that stuff. Now she’s cleaned up her act and has become one of the few entertainers to have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award — and be the star of a hit morning talk show.
