Its never as simple as some people are trying to make it here. If you have never witnessed domestic violence first hand, then you can’t really say if someone is a monster or not. I work with victims of domestic violence, both women and men. NO MAN SHOULD EVER HIT A WOMAN AND NO WOMAN SHOULD EVER HIT A MAN. I saw a woman who was murdered by her husband because she wouldn’t fight him back. I also know a man that is now paralyzed because he was ashamed to tell that his wife beat him up. He never hit her back and paid for it by losing the use of his limbs. Stop trying to make the man out to be a monster. Those of you that are running off at the mouth about how much he is a monster should be ashamed. Innocent until proven guilty, if he’s guilty, he will pay. Seriously though, it’s really not that complicated. I don’t have to know EXACTLY what happened to really see what went down. People hit when they lose control of themselves. I am so thankful that the court of public opinion does not count for convictions nor exonerations! Nor does it have much bearing for discerning the real truth of the matter. If all of us subscribed to the thought that an individual cannot, and should not, practice self-control when facing certain circumstances, the majority of us would be in prison or deceased. It takes an even stronger man, or woman, to simply walk away from perceived provocation. This has happened to my uncle who walked away from his physically abusive wife before he could attempt to hurt her himself. While the situation is sad for both sides, I am disturbed to read other sista’s comments that a woman somehow deserves the violence that occurred. We may all deserve to be beat if that is the case, but no one else has the right to place their hands on you. I have been stressing that fact to a girls’ group I serve as a mentor to as healthy self-esteem seems to be missing in too many of our sistas. This should be taught to young sistas from both men and women. My dad taught me that no man is to ever lay his hands on me violently for any reason. Our society has devalued black women for far too long that even our own men and women have bought into it and continue to warmly welcome its ugly little head, even in situations like this one. This idea that black women are less deserving of respect and justice dates back to Slavery. Sadly, someone of our brothers and sistas still maintain that slavery mentality. It’s beyond time for us to change our perception of our sistas. We still think that we’re just booty-shaking, neck-rolling, ignorant, “nappy-headed” h** who deserve less than humane and respectful treatment. But, as long as we preserve this notion that deserve less than, then we will continue to accept violence of all forms as sanctions we somehow deserve simply for being black women. Sometimes when I am in Court, opposing counsel (usually a white male between 40 & 60) will completely undermine my ability to fight him by assuming I am hard to get along with, will roll my neck, and will somehow be ill-prepared for trial as if it’s not my place to be there to begin with. However, most are shocked when they lose the case, and to a smiling face, no less.

Regarding the rape comment, an 11-year old African American girl, in Milwaukee, was gang-raped by 20 black men and boys, about three years back. Many comments from other sistas were “she knew what she was doing”, and somehow it was her fault, a child, that she was raped. Since many of our sistas think so-low of ourselves, the perception is that this 11-year-old brought about this situation herself. Now of course, if she were raped by white men, then she’s a child again in our eyes. The underlying message is the same: black women are not worthy and deserving of the same respect that we give to our brothers or what our counter-parts receive. If we can’t stand by each other, who will stand for us?

I believe Chris Brown is a good person. I come from an abusive home with an abusive father, and I can tell you first-hand that abusers are complex individuals. They are NOT the one-sided monsters that some people would make them out to be. My father can be the most loving, kind, generous human being. But he has an awful temper to this day. When he loses his temper, he becomes someone else. I have no doubt that my father loves all of us, and I am fortunate in that fact, but I also have no doubt that he is NOT someone I would want to cross because he cannot control his temper, and his loved ones were frequently the recipients of his wrath.

I believe that Chris Brown is a good person, but he is an abuser. There are no excuses. He needs to accept what he did and apologize. Period.

Are these relatives even close enough to Chris to know what he would or wouldn’t be capable of, especially since he became famous? Not that their opinion really changes the situation since family/friends tend to be either in denial or lying in situations like these. I’ll never forget Kwame Kilpatrick’s mother coming to his defense. Hell even OJ still got people who believe he didn’t do it. But I don’t think coming out and saying he must have been provoked into hurting her before we get pics or a clear report is going to help Chris. It just makes it seem like they’re trying to shift the blame to her at any cost. I think we’ll know a lot more next week when the police finish their investigation and give the case back to the DA. Also, I think this puts those theories that Ri was the one with the history of abusing Chris to rest. None of his people that have came forward have mentioned that. And it would be a big thing since it would establish a pattern of her hitting him and thinking she could get away with it. Instead the opposite has happened with her and some of her people saying he’s the one with the abusive history.

Off topic, but Chris is lucky that the LAPD didn’t find him hurting Rihanna when they arrived. If he had just been threatening her why are statements coming from them that she’s been choked and has devil horns from the beating, etc? Why are they saying she has visible bruising? People should stop speculating and believing all the stories on the net. Fact of the matter, if Rhianna physically attacked Chris, she too could be criminally charged. If she has made false statements to the authorities, perjury charges can be made against her. First and foremost, if I were advising Chris, I would have him issue a statement apologizing for the unfortunate incident in a way not to admit guilt, but for allowing himself to get in such a predicament. There isn’t a need to further damage Chris or Rhianna. Here is a clear example of why the black community can never get their act together. The issue is not who provoke what, but rather the support, love and therapy both of these young people need. As a community we should stop making ignorant statements and offer pour prayers and learn a lesson from this tragedy.

thanks. i recently went back to my job ( last 4 months ) and that was pretty hard – cuz everyone knows, you know everyone knows, ppl dont know what to say to you and you dont know what to say. it was awful the first few weeks, but now its great.

i have yet to “officially” choose sides, but i do feel for rhianna and i want to automatically choose her side.
but i have been hearing alot about her rage/craziness.
i know its wrong to hit a girl but sometimes girls take advatage of that. they try to push you over the edge and know that if ish hit the fan everybody will throw salt at the guy and sprinke suger on the girl. now in no way am i saying rhi deserved what happened to her (expecially when you hear about knots upside the head and choking cuz thats some serious stuff) but there is always two (sometimes three) sides to the story.
in one story it is said that she went crazy on chris (hitting, throwing keys, and just purposely pushing his buttons.)

the reason why i say this is because one time i was mad at my cousin and i smacked the hell out of him. and we all know about the quick reflexes like when someone hits you out of nowhere and your already irritated so you hit them back faster than the speed of light and twice as hard and then you process what you did only after the fact. well thats what he did. he hit my ass back and my aunt saw the whole thing. thinking that my aunt was going to punish him i started to work the victim act and looked at her like a sad puppy. but i got the shock of my life.
she looked at me and said thats what i get and i should not have hit him just because i was mad. and to be honest i dont remember why i was mad in the first place. he was still scolded for hitting a me though.
im just going to wait until the story develps more from his camp before i make opinions about him. i truly hope he didnt try to choke her to death, though. that sounds like some serial killer mentality.
i just think its sad for such talent to become threatned for high school reasons. he seemed like he had a promising life and career. i wasnt a “HUGE” fan, but a fan nonetheless. and rhianna was a fashion icon to me. this is so sad.

my biggest stumbling block right now is guilt. i go for counselling 3 times a week cuz of the horrific guilt i still feel.

i have 1 sister and 2 older brothers and we were taught never to hit, never, ever. and if we did, we got punished, time outs, grounded, etc, never a physical punishment. so with the way i was raised, and the fact i did hit him back, went against everything i believe.

I’m not sayin his aunt is lying or anything. But most abusers are very nice ppl. They aren’t this glooming evil ppl that are just mean. Also most abusers start at the age of 14. so because he’s 19 doesn’t mean anything.

I actually don’t blame Ri for not showing her face. I’m surprised the paps didn’t get pics of her leaving the hospital, but maybe they didn’t find out in enough time. I doubt she wants cameras shoved in her face or to face all the questions the paps will be shouting like did you give chris herpes, did you start the fight, etc. Plus if her face is bruised she may not want people to see her until some of the swelling and bruising is gone. Her reps have probably advised her to avoid the public eye and say nothing without their permission. The police already have the pics of her, and she doesn’t have to come out just to please our curiosity. She can’t stay in hiding forever, but she’s still recovering. However, one night the beatings got to him and he punched the shit out of her and from then on she never touched him again. Chris Brown doesn’t have a criminal record. He will get CONDITIONAL PROBATION. He’s going to do community service at a battered women’s shelter. He’s free on $50K bail. THAT says a lot. Chris had three options to deal with the situation with Rhianna rather than choosing this outcome for himself. He could have chose to discuss, ignore, or walk away from her. If she wanted to mess up her career by chasing after women, fighting or creating scenes that on her. He had too much to lose over some else’s immaturity or insecurities. However, if he was abusive to her he deserves every punishment coming his way.

I believe Chris thinks he was provoked. Look at what the police report post bossip put up said:

He got pissed off after she made the fake call, and he probably considers that to be provoking him. Though I do wonder why she would pretend like the cops are going to be there. every time i told my husband i was going to call the cops he threatened to kill me. cuz he would be caught, and he had felt like he had lost his control over me. he would say ” your lying, you do this to yourself, you make me do this, you should be like janet ( his sister ), she does whatever her husband tells her to do. in our 5 year marriage i never worked, he told me i never needed too. and i believed him.

the 1 st 2 years of our marriage was totally blissful love, we never fought, i was sooo totally in love. then he got an invitation from his bosses to become a partner in the firm he was working for and not long after that things changed.

In no way am I saying that she deserved to get beat down, if that is in fact the case. However like others have said, if a person, man or woman attempts to inflict bodily harm on another person, man or woman, then if they get bodily harm inflicted on them back, they asked for it. We all know what abuse is, and certainly beating the crap out of someone for not getting dinner on the table in time obviously is unacceptable. Just as beating someone up for cheating, or flirting, is unacceptable. I do not by any means condone domestic violence, no one should be resorting to physical violence to resolve their issues period, but it happens. My point is that it seems we have a double standard by saying that no matter what she does, a man should never hit a woman, well some of ya’ll need to watch “Snapped” because a women is just as capable of severely injuring or killing a man, as a man is a woman. Even if you aren’t physically as strong as a man, that still doesn’t put a limit on the damage you can do if you really want to. So to say no matter what, I think that sends the message that a woman has a pass to incite violence against a man, because she’s a woman. If an act is wrong, it’s wrong period, no matter the gender, and that is the real issue here. I have seen women who will do shit to their husbands, I had a friend who pushed her husband down the steps because they were arguing, though he didn’t grab her up, he wanted to, and if he had, I honestly can’t say that I would have blamed him. It’s a normal instinct to fight back when you are being attacked, even a dog will snap back at an owner if keeps being beaten, so it’s ridiculous to expect that a “person” would like to allow themselves to be assaulted by someone. I think the way it is handled all depends on the gravity of the situation, because I know if I’m a man and some crazy woman is coming at me trying to kill me, I’m gonna do my best to knock that bitch out. Sorry, thats just how I see it. Not saying that was the case here, just an example of how sometimes the way we react in a situation is defined by the situation.

I remember that. I had to go and look it up on bossip, but I think they tried to explain it off as a stomach problem or something. I don’t think anybody bought that, which is why some of us thought she was pregnant. The next pic we got of them was a couple of days later and they were looking glum/upset and in red hoodies. Maybe you’re right and she had to leave the stage because she was still suffering from the after effects of abuse and they used the hoodies to hide the bruises. That would make the whole situation very interesting since it was only a few months ago in November and she was supposed to have went to the hospital. I’m totally shocked that most of you sisters are condoning black women hitting black men and expect no reprisals. Chris Brown’s actions was not only self defense, but also vendication for all the male victims of violence purpetrated by women. Men all over are still shakened by what happened to Phil Hartman, who not only took the path of least resistance by not raising his hands against the woman he loved, but by turning his back to her, he was rewarded with a slug to back of his head. You women are truly frightening. God i’m afraid for the future of our young men who must be constantly wary of you female’s passive/aggressive behavior.

I am a woman, and I believe that NO ONE should hit in a relationship. I also believe that Rhianna has more to hide than Chris. Look at their media image. She’s in S&M stuff, singing about Disturbia, Rehab over her obsessive love and all kind of ish. Chris is in a letterman’s jacket, smiling and dancing and singing about romancing. Though they are media images, nowadays, no star is going to be COMPLETELY fake. I believe she has some of these qualities in her character.

My second point is that no one is talking about rhianna’s past behavior. she was on not one, but TWO MTV shows dating younger men. On one, My Super Sweet 16, she gets a stank attitude because the freakin 16 year old, Darnell, was having a good time at the party dancing with other girls. And she wasn’t even his girlfriend. That right there shows me some crazy tendencies and her obsessive need to be the center of attention at someone’s elses function.

I, as a former martial arts instuctor, know that that bite marks, a last ditch effort, and bruises on the arms, typically to restrain your attacker, are defensive tactics. Also, a Lambo is a car with a very tight space. Chris Brown is quite tall with very long armspand, which would cause him to be quite contained and very difficult and take more energy for him to strike, which I believe were defensive. Rihanna, a smaller human would have more mobility in a tight space, and as the passenger, less distractions in striking. I think that she started the fight. And, after getting hit so many times and his defensive tactics failing, i believe he hit her. That, to me, is normal human reaction.

I also believe that he is admitting to hitting her because of his past situation with witnessing his mother being abused. he probably vowed never to hit women, and is feeling incredible guilt that, even if they were defensive strikes, he is experiencing extreme inner conflict.

and, my last conflict, i know that there is a very small percentage of vindictive women who feign domestic abuse injuries in situations like these in order to completely destroy the man. Of this small few, some actually hit themselves or have an acommplice hit them. I believe that rhianna is capable of this behavior.
