In some ways we agree, in others, we don’t. Here’s what I wanted to say:

By and large, white women DO take a more active role in their reproductive health. They will seek out birth control, emergency contraception and abortions as a means of controlling their reproduction and they do so in far greater numbers than their black and Hispanic counterparts. There are myriad reasons for this: accessibility, financial resources, access to information and the realization that taking a more active role in their reproductive health solidifies their future. However, white women do get pregnant, forget to use condoms, go raw, abuse emergency contraception and have tons of babies and abortions, just like all women; it’s not just black women that do this. That was the only bone I wanted to pick with Marquis’ statement.

I’ve learned through some of my programs that when women of color have access to resources and information, they typically make better decisions. I’ve run programs for at-risk girls, mostly black and Hispanic, and just by parti*****ting in the program, their likelihood of unplanned pregnancy before adulthood dropped significantly. So, I generally think it’s a lack of information that leads to many black women getting pregnant in less than ideal life situations. However, I see every hue of women coming into the clinic, from white, black, (very few) Asian, and Hispanic. Having “uh-ohs” is pretty common across the board. My only contention is not to racialize it and say that only black women make dumb decisions. We may see the evidence of the dumb decision they made from the presence of their child, but all colors of people make errors in judgment, so there’s no need to malign the black woman as if she’s more libidinous than any other woman.

The mistakes that black women (and black men, as we cannot impregnate ourselves) make DO have a negative impact on our communities. Just as every community is adversely affected when children are unplanned for and the parents do not have the resources or know-how to properly raise them. Does this happen to an excessive degree with black women? Yep. However, instead of criticizing and impugning black women, perhaps we can make a collective effort to better the situation.
