A West Virginia man is behind bars after allegedly setting a mother cat and two of her litters on fire.
Michael Wayne Ford, 56, is accused of putting one mother cat and 11 of her offspring in a box before setting it on fire in his fire pit, WVNSTV reported.
His wife, Robin Ford, alerted authorities to the residence after she heard their cries, leading to the arrest of Michael Ford on Monday.
“He would always say, one day I’m going to kill these cats… and I just brushed it off,” Robin said. Now, she said she has to look at the grave and murder site of her 12 cats every time she walks outside her home.
Robin told a trooper her husband had complained about the cats earlier that day, according to the Associated Press.
Ford’s wife said she saw him burning the box, but didn’t know it was filled with kittens and full-grown cats until it was too late. Police sifted through the rubble and were able to gather the remains of seven of the cats.
Eight of the burned cats were kittens. Robin told WVNSTV that she is now haunted with the sight, smell and sounds of the burned animals.
“He’s a baby killer. He killed the mommy of the babies and to me that is not only cat murder, it’s baby murder,” she said.
Robin’s 14-year-old son and her nephew built a cross as a grave for the cats. They plan on writing “In memory of Snowbell and her babies” on the grave. She told the station how it terrified her to find out her husband was capable of this cruelty.
“I don’t want to be married to someone who is burning up animals and maybe turn around and burn me and my son up,” she said.
