As a member of the bajan/barbadian (really could care less) entertainment society for a few years it is interesting to hear what Americans have to say regarding an artist that they have seen in the media for the last 2 years (wait did my accent just change?). Now yes, she gets her fair share of publicity, but isnt that the whole idea of being an international pop star? I mean at least there are no shots of her crotch without underwear.

This girl, for those of you who dont know her personally, (yes i do, have had the pleasure of being in her company more than once, and no thats not twice) is living a dream, period! She got an opportunity that most likely all of you, if you had the talent, would take. And it got her…paid/famous/awards/sex/tattoos/gossip/envy/ and a whole list of other things. So what! If you (and im sure some of you are) were 19 and were blessed with this burden you too would be growing up in front of the whole world.

Yes the Nation Newspaper puts her in it, thats their job. We have never had a superstar like this. Yes some bajans are jealous. Nature of our country, having more to do with generations of colonialism, but that is a history lesson you can spend some time researching (you might learn something besides American history). Now as far as BossLady has said she DID put Barbados on the map regarding a musical artist…in America. We have been on the map for many years, in soca, in tourism, in rum, in beautiful beaches, etc but stars like Biggie Smalls, Cuba Gooding Jr., and countless other US entertainers come from not only bajan heritage but many of these tiny islands (who by the way endured a 7.4 earthquake today).

So when i hear people here wasting time laughing at someone’s toes I think about the day that they were picking their nose and how i wish someone had a camera to take a pic for the world to see, or when they didnt perform so well in bed, or any other reason that makes on look a little less than perfect. America, what a country, the people here are who are eating this for the sake of entertainment value because their lives are just soooo full. Reality is we love being from the caribbean, it makes us different, our food, our culture, our accents, our love for life. Meaning birds, sunsets, swimming in crystal clear water, dancing on the beach at night in a club, family, hot sauce not tobasco sauce. You get the point. Not “waiting for the next one to come along.”

Now when i hear comments from Akimbo about how she cannot do for Barbados like what “Outkast/JD/Luda did for Atlanta, Destiny’s Child/Insert Gaggle of Rappers Here did for Houston, or Missy/Timbaland/Neptunes did for Virginia. Nope, never.” I have to laugh. You are correct yet still so far off of understanding an industry and a sensation and what that can do. Outkast came out in 1994 with their debut album, thats 13 years ago, yet the south has only recently been getting recognition. And of course by the time Luda came along he only was able to do so because of what Outkast did 13 years ago. Have you forgotten about Get Boys who started back in the 80’s in Houston? So it may take some time, but she’s the start, when Shontelle drops her debut album you will see another bajan artist, and when Miguel drops his, another, and when Hal Linton does hisl, another. And in some time in the near future you will hear of many more. That’s the way it goes. Way way back when Bob Marley became internationally known, now look at how many Jamaican artists america knows about. So lets be grateful instead of insanely jealous of another’s glory and give thanks that we can be blessed with someone of her talent and someone who is a trend setter for the remainder of the Bajan artists, cuz yes many of them want their shot too. Including me, yeah i said it…and?

It’s not surprise West Indian women are known for their jealousy…They’re natural born haters ESPECIALLY TOWARDS LIGHT-SKINNED women————————— WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT WHERE DO YOU GET THE IDEA THAT WEST INDIAN WOMEN ARE MORE JEALOUS THAN ANY OTHER WOMEN. I AM LIGHT SKIN AND WEST INDIAN AND I AGREE RHIANNA IS NO BIG DEAL. PEOPLE MAKE SUCH A BIG FUSS OVER CELEBS WHY CAUSE THEY NOT DOING ANYTHING FOR YOU PERSONALLY AND IT IS UNFAIR TO SAY SHE PUT BARBADOS ON THE MAP THAT PERSON WHO WROTE THE ARTICLE IS PROBABLY FED UP OF HEARING EVERY DETAIL ABOUT RHIANNA AND ANNOYED IT GETS OLD BECAUSE SHE IS JUST ANOTHER PERSON NOT ANYMORE IMPORTANT THAN YOU OR ME.
