A man who plays Santa Claus at the Hanover Mall was in Hingham District Court on Monday morning after being arrested over the weekend for allegedly touching a woman inappropriately.
The man, Herbert G. Jones, 62, of 17E Public St., Assonet, was arraigned on a count of indecent assault and battery on a woman over age 14. Judge Francis Marini set bail at $1,000 and prohibited Jones from going near the Hanover Mall or playing Santa Clause anywhere else for the rest of the holiday season.
Jones is due back in court Dec. 24, Christmas Eve.
According to a police report on file at the court, officers were contacted Saturday by a woman who said Jones had pinched her buttocks while she was working for a photo company that takes pictures of children with Santa at the center of the mall. She said Jones denied touching her when she told her manager.
The woman told police that Jones had previously told her that he wished “you were a few years older and I was younger,” the report said.
Sir! WTF is wrong with you?!?
Another employee of the photography company told police that she saw Jones reach behind the other woman, but wasn’t sure if he touched her, police said. Both women said they felt uncomfortable after the incident and quit working for the company.
A manager for the company told police that the woman who reported the alleged assault had been unhappy all day because she was questioned earlier about some money missing from the booth.
When police located Jones in his changing room, he told them “I did not touch that girl,” according to the report. Police noted that Jones was escorted out of the mall wearing street clothes, not his Santa suit.
Probably best that let him changed clothes. It’s not a good look to have Santa Claus doin’ a perp walk through the mall during the holidays.
