Who would have guessed that a couple of kids who kissed as 8-year-olds would end up as married old heads?

Via People reports:

George Raynes and Carol Harris, both 83, have known each other since 1936. They played the leads in a class production of Sleeping Beauty, an event that would influence the rest of their lives.

Raynes told CBC News that he wasn’t actually supposed to kiss Harris during the play, but “rascal that I was, I laid a big wet one on her. And she jumped up like a startled deer, you know … So she’s the first girl I ever kissed.”

Raynes moved away to Toronto after high school, married, and raised a family. But he kept in touch with Harris, who never married. Then, in June, a few months after his wife of 61 years died, Raynes drove back to their hometown, Saint John, for “a last look around.”

While there, he met up with Harris again, and the pair rekindled their friendship, which soon blossomed into something more.

“He suggested that we had had a great time and we had always been good friends and why don’t we spend the rest of our lives together,” Harris told CBC News. Raynes proposed to her on the deck of a restaurant in Ontario, and Harris immediately said “Yes.” The couple were married Saturday in Saint John. George’s son Peter was his father’s best man.

“It’s getting rarer that two people decide to spend the rest of their lives together,” Carol told PEOPLE in a phone interview Monday. “But it was kind of like a fairy tale for us.”

“Like Beauty and the Beast,” George chimed in, and Carol laughed. “I finally found my Prince Charming,” she said.

We’re thrilled for them, but you know we have some mixed emotions about her sitting on the sidelines in the friendzone for his 61 year marriage.

Hopefully they’ve got a lot of years left in them so they can enjoy their matrimony-dom!
