It’s a slow news day so we are going to kick off a new theme. Some of our favorite quotes from “Taye”:

The reason I have an issue with black men dating white is varied, but it has alot of do with social ecomonical standards some people believe, racial standards of beauty, and a reserve racism against black women. I am not against interracial dating if it’s true love-but in most instances, in my opinion, SOME BLACK MEN PURPOSELY EXCLUDE BLACK WOMEN….

I understand what he is saying about the Black community accepting a Hispanic & Black on-screen relationship. I think it appeased me to a degree that is wasnt a white chic although it still made me somewhat awkward, AND I AM HISPANIC. The problem I have with Hollywood when it comes to casting Hispanic women is that they only cast the European or lighter skinned Hispanic women to play the jaw dropping Hispana. Notice how they make the Black men in the films damn near drool for her and the scene seems to go in slow motion so as to glorify her beauty and they always seem to worship these women in the film b/c of her presumed beauty. But then with brown skinned Hispana, is cast as an African American, b/c there is no way a Brown skin Hispana like Zoe Saldana can play a Eva Mendes or Penelope Cruz character. And dare they even try to make a Zoe hispanic love interest when they can have the ulitimate Latina, JLo…
Also, Taye Diggs although correct with what he is saying has always seemed bitter to me about Black women not liking him b/c he has a white wife. However, that seems to be his complex affecting him b/c I STILL have not seen the Black community disown him in anyway. We support his movies and the mediocre tv shows he has ventured to do. So the discomfort is with himself b/c we are fine with it if he is. I remember years ago after Best Man he said something about that and I was thinking that movie sold out at the box office, what is he talking about. He needs to stop thinking that we are caught up in who he married and get comfortable with it instead of always defending himself when noone has attacked him for it. Black men seem to be all for interracial dating… unlike most black women. Somebody said relationships have to do more with your economic and social background than race these days. You can no longer *****ume all blacks are poor and live in the ghetto, many black kids and teens are growing up in suburbs immersed in white suburbia.The community our parents grew up in no longer exists. To expect someone just to date somebody cuz they’re the same race is ridiculous. Black women are most affected because black men are either grinding and w/ white women or no good or locked up, there is a lack of good available brothers- look at our college statisitics. There was on post that talked about how women who are black on magazines also indicate they are latin/white/irish/indian, and so on.
Basically, these women say they are mixed. But, you know what? Most every black person born today is ‘mixed’, and it doesn’t mean they automatically are the skin tone of Halle Berry, Mariah Carey, Vin Diesel, and Derek Jeter! I have ethnicities of Cherokee native, Blackfoot native, English and Scottish in my bloodline as well; but when people in America see me, I am STRATIFIED as black, because of my full lips, my black eyes, my brown mocha skin, and my black shiny, wooly hair, and the fact that I. I love who I am, so labels do not affect me. I’m black and I am proud.
I do not prescribe to get any gifts from the government for being black. I wish not to be discriminated against for my blackness, either, but I know have been and will be in the future. I will say though it’s time-out for people being so color struck! How is a black person supposed to look to be successful to other black and white people when looks will always change with age regardless of how many times a person gets knifed-up? We need to not program ourselves to place people in boxes of color, but that will not happen.

This quote came from an article that was done as a promotion for Taye’s series Daybreak. The interviewer’s first question was about Taye’s white wife and Taye didn’t think that was relevant to talk about. I mean I’m all for free press, but the truth of the matter is, the interviewer had an agenda and it wasn’t to help promote a new series…the only network series by the way with an African-American lead.

The producers thought that having a black actress would make it a ‘black’ comedy, and lose the white audience.
The producers thought that a white actress would be too much of a political statement and lose a white (Red state) audience.
The producers decided to go with something non-threatening…and so they’re left with Asian and Latina. There aren’t enough Asian actresses and not enough of an Asian audience. Latina is ‘in’ right now, so they went with that.
Very simple. Anyone who knows ANYTHING about the business knows this.

And also–I saw Taye Diggs in a movie about a South African magazine from the 50s, called Drum. It was weird to see him with a Black (African) wife! It almost wasn’t even believable! But he did a good job though.

This friend has a white girlfriend that keeps him on a short leesh. I can honestly say I am attracted to White men just as easily as I can be attracted to a Black man. Based purely upon the physical, there are white men that I fantasize about {esp. this Italian @ work} just as frequently as I have romances in my head with Black men.
