The whole role model thing always makes me roll my eyes. When I was a kid, I looked up to TLC, Madonna, Janet and Brandy in that I wanted to dress like them and copy their hair (TLC, Janet) and looks overall. Little children, especially little black girls, need role models like doctors, nurses, engineers, scientists, artists, educators and activists. Those are the women I wanted to grow up to be like.

As for Beyonce, her style is not my style at all. I have a problem in general with little girls thinking they need make up and a weave to be beautiful. I have two pageant girls in my family. If it takes hours to get you to a stage in which you’re considered beautiful, to me, it implies that what you are naturally is not good enough. These girls are 5 and 8 by the way. Major wigs, fake front teeth, spray tan contouring (to make them look thinner and more toned), French mani, layers of make up, fake lashes, etc. Outside of the pageant circuit, my fear is that little girls view themselves as ugly without all that.

Role models are real. I feel you on having doctors, lawyers, teachers, one’s own parents be role models……………. but what happens to the kid who lives in a place where the majority of those people are white or asian? and the only black people one see’s who are ‘making it’ truly are on television at the club? or are over-extending themselves to buy material possessions on a working poor or even poverty level budget?

We have so many young black women who hold their noses up at WalMart because they want Prada, Gucci, Louis Vitton, Blahnick Manolo….. and are willing to put good money in new immigrant hands for bootleg material. Those immigrants aren’t wearing any of that stuff, but those immigrants are not going to be living in those neighborhoods where they sell bootleg status symbols to people for whom wealth is only a name and that’s good enough.

I’m always a little wary when black people try to wave off the importance of role models. It all matters, to me, even things that perhaps shouldn’t or are swept under the rug because people erroneously think you have to ‘be strong’ and that’s enough.

TLC was cool, but my momma would woop my ass if I tried to throw on a tank top for the school dance. I was always taught to separate TV from real life.

Secondly, I think it’s superficial as hell to not like someone because of their fake hair, fake nails, etc – especially an entertainer. If I did that, I would drop half of my friends. The reason why I friends with them is because I know their character. The problem is people look at E! News and come to these blogs and they think they really know these celebrities. Well, you don’t. I’m fond of Beyonce, just as much as I’m fond of Alicia Keys, or Jill Scott, or India Aire. I like their music. Even if I don’t like an artist’s style or music, I still can’t make a character judgment because I really don’t know them.

While I think that blogs today have a big opportunity to bring a lot of people, especially black people, from all over together – At the same time, I think a lot of blogs foster negative relationships and sentiments amongst our people.

I agree there are a lot off studio gangsters. And that Jarule is no gangster but the point about him having kids and being married is just silly. You do know that Harry-O , John Gotti, Wayne Akbar Pray and many others all had families. Do you think because a guy is in the street he is a deadbeat Dad very often that is far from the truth.
