He did sell out. When I say sell out, I mean he has compromised his true intent of the song to make some coin. The original lyrics or Chocalate Rain were relevant and deep, but when he is on talkshows and they ask him what chocalate rain is about, he never says it’s about the plight of African Americans.
This commercial has different lyrics than the original Chocalate Rain song.

from what i was taught, “coon” is a term, shortened, from raccoon, that white southerners (who, no doubt borrowed it from us in the first place) and eventually the kkk would and still do, use to refer to us. like racoons, “coons” were clawing and dark-eyed animals that, when given the chance, would steal their masters food and cause general mayhem.
as for “sellout,” here is a working definition for that term that never left me… a “sellout” is a person—any person—that would turn their back on their race. therefore, many of us out there hollering about such-and-such being a sellout might want to stop and consider that by turning our back on them, we are also sellouts. my level of discomfort is piqued by BOSSIP—whoever they are—feeling comfortable throwing the “coon” label around as if it is okay. i am not down with this “coon” talk at all. and, for those of u who read this and feel i should “lighten up,” i would like to quote one of our more eloquent wordsmiths named Too Short, who said, “GET IN WHERE U FIT IN…” Bossip boasts 3 million readers…read this.

Whatever your opinion of Tay or the video, I disagree with Bossip’s use of the word coon. No site and no person should be supporting historically and dramatically racist language that’s been used to hate monger against black people. Period.
I object to it for the same reasons I would not approve of N***er of the Day. Regardless of what YOU think the word symbolizes, there is a reality of what it has been and still is used for.
Stop giving other people the material and license to use language like this against us. Respect yourself and your ethnicity enough to say this kind of language is not and is never “accurate” or appropriate to describe a black person. Ever.
On the subject of Tay, if he wants his music to be taken seriously I can see the material in his writing to support that. If he feels comfortable making a joke out of his viral video that’s his prerogative as well. I just hope he realizes he can never have it both ways.

It depends. I’ve seen ‘Coon of the Day’ used against Snoop Dog for the Iacocca commercial at black sites, and I personally felt it was appropriate use of the word at the time.
I think it matters who uses the word and against whom it’s used, though. It takes more than being a geek or weird to be a coon; you have to do something that’s ultimately detrimental to the black community while collecting a paycheck on top of underlining non-black’s negative stereotypes of blacks, in my opinion. ****Tay Zonday is not a coon.**** Bishop Don Magic Juan, *possibly* a coon.

I remixed “Chocolate Rain” for Tay a while back before all this TV “fame” started. I did a nice smoothed out version because I felt the lyrics needed that treatment so that people wouldn’t be so jarred by the original track and not listen to the words.
While I agree dude sold MAY have sold out, I think the video of the commercial took a good song and turned it into a mockery.
As far as him denying what “Chocolate Rain” is about, I think he makes it up to the listener to decipher it, even though it’s kind of obvious.
A lot of songwriters deliberately never explain their lyrics because rather than have them explain something that’s obviously personal, it’s up to the listener to connect with it.
And yeah, regardless, that “coon” comment is *****ed up.

I agree with most of your audience. When I say if a race and it’s members are truly strong, it is not the appearance of things that matter. And as true of individuals, if you know who you are inside then the worlds opinions do not matter. However just like any other race there are things with in us that do not benefit us as a group. It’s time that we abandon image as a source of what ails us and focus on actions and behavior that each of us commits to. Why is it that any one person in the black race can represent the whole group so easily. I know we didn’t create this system but we are begining to demonstrate a special fondness for it’s injustice. Maybe we should have a special name for those who refuse to parti*****te in the race black, human or interplanetary, then criticize those who try to destroy those who try to make change. Maybe we should also have a name for those who try to create a one dimensional race through the establishment of limiting stereotypes that make are behavior predictable and self destructive. It is time to grow up and realize that we are just as diverse a group as any other people (even more so due to the way the world currently structures race). This diversity is essential for our survival. So today the controls do not apply internally or externally. Every one of us is important but to feel like we are responsible for the actions of every one in our race is quite a burden to carry. If you are playing your role in the community I guarantee you would not feel this way. Hopefully we all agree a sell out is anyone who tries to destroy a race from the inside. How many individuals like this do you know, where do they reside and what are their actions? It’s the content and intentions behind each persons actions that set the pace for our placement in the heavens. I am not at all familiar with Tay Zonday but upon second glance it appears that the goal of this is to deliver a deeper message and highlight some issues within our media through a vehicle that garners much attention. You have to let go of the insecurities held onto for years. They may apply but they do not benefit us. You have a site here that I enjoy because I thought it was imaginative, fun and not so serious. However if we truly evaluate the content found on Bossip how much of this can be considered self hate and (if I may borrow from your language to create an action based derivative ) black coonery.

Let’s cut it out. The ORIGINAL lyrics of ‘Chocolate Rain’ were meant to be thought provoking and meaningful. What he did is no different than many other black artist. SET US BACK 10 YEARS! The finished product is backed by Dr. Pepper to further WHITE AMERICA’S Agenda- selling us more and more meaningless stuff and then preach to us about how Blacks don’t save money and are dying early deaths. his original chocolate rain song was about racism so i like it and i dont feel like he was doing anything to sellout. i dont think he should have agreed to let them throw chocolate on him but they wanted to do something else because normally in music videos they spray the people with champagne or water. he seems like a shy guy and he doesnt own a tv so he is a loner and this is a way for him to pay the bills with this commercial and maybe he may even meet a nice black woman and fall in love.

I have to agree with I love . . .Snickers. I don’t think it is satire. I think it’s a bunch of corny gimmicks used for shock value in a corporate ad to sell a beverage. Even if the original intent of the first version of the song was to be meaningful, this Dr. Pepper ad, completely contradicts that and detracts from what little credibilty Tay had to begin with. I mean, how are you gonna sell out before you ever really get put on, cause he’s not mainstream or particularly famous. Now selling out doesn’t mean endorsing corporate products, cause Alicia Keys just did a spot for Target, but you don’t see Alicia sexing up or changing her image just because Target’s throwing money her way. Even “The Roots” allowed one of their songs to be used in a Volkswagon ad. If you want to see a real satire of hip-hop videos watch The Roots, “What they do” video. They manage to satirize the sexism, money, ho’s, clothes, champagne hip-hop thing without having women parade around half naked.
If you turn your “conscious” song into a whack ***** rap video with all types of sexist imagery the second a corporate sponsor comes knocking, then that’s not being consistent. Hypocritical is what it is. Tay is a textbook sell out.
