Mychal Bell Pleads Guilty to Battery

Mychal Bell pleaded guilty to battery charges yesterday for the 2006 beating of a classmate:
Mychal Bell, 17, originally was charged as an adult with attempted murder in the beating of Justin Barker in December 2006. That charge was reduced before a jury convicted him in June of aggravated second-degree battery. An appeals court threw that verdict out in September and ordered Bell retried as a juvenile.
Under his deal, Bell pleaded guilty Monday to a juvenile charge of second-degree battery in return for an 18-month sentence, with credit for 10 months he already has served. Bell had faced being placed in a juvenile facility until his 21st birthday.
Although he has about eight months left to serve for the beating of Barker, Bell is currently serving a separate 18-month sentence for previous unrelated juvenile charges. He has about 16 months left on that sentence, which will run at the same time as the sentence in the Barker case. Bell also must pay court costs plus $935 to Barker’s family, testify should his co-defendants in the Barker attack stand trial, undergo counseling and be reintegrated into the school system.

He’s had numerous run-ins with the law before this and the degree to which he beat this dude up is why he got tried as an adult in the first place. What the article doesn’t state is that the entire court hearing was delayed because Al Sharpton needed to get a touch-up before being seen on camera. He can’t go out in public without getting those roots straightened.
I donno..I’d have to say he got a pretty good deal now that they charged him as a juvenile…I know people will jump on me for saying this but yes the system is crazy but we also can’t forget that he was part of the jumping…I know what the white boy did and i feel it is unfair that he didnt get tried for a hate crime, but sometimes we as african americans need to remember that the system is unfair, so we must watch the things that we do as “revenge” and taking things into our own hands. its like if some1 in your family was raped and you killed the person who did it…you can’t go to court and expect to not get a sentence…you can’t justify violence with more violence…so i think he got a secure deal and they are allowing him to run both sentences at the same time when honestly they couldve made him serve them seperately for seperate crimes.
This dude was arrested for times for various crimes before he even turned 16!!! So I hoped all this mess has taught him a lesson and I hope that his parents start doing a better job and get this young man some counselling because he clearly needs it. Please, please, stay out of trouble Mr. Bell.

I agree with the majority. I think he should be let go with time served. Especially since he served those first 10 months in an adult facility, and on trumpet up charges. The so called plea deal was not the best they could have done. I pray that he gets his life back after all of this and is able to become a productive young man.

I’m sorry I just think this was a good bargain…a school fight is like a 1 on 1 deal not a 6 on 1 deal…they were jumping him to hurt him in the worst way…yes we not suppose to let people disrespect us…but i wont be throwing my life away over a word…ill just do like jill scott and laugh histerically until they get annoyed at my response and leave. I agree with jojo people take fighting way too far nowadays, which is why it is not a crime to do so…n when you go to school you do sign a paper that tells you your responsibilities as a student and respect for the school. I’m just glad it was reduced and they are letting both sentences run together…i hope he clears his mind and gets his life straight.
