Queen Latifah Officiates Gay Grammy Weddings
Via MTV reports:
It was a touching addition to the 2014 Grammy Awards: After winning four awards Sunday night (January 26), Macklemore & Ryan Lewis concluded their triumphant night with an energetic performance of “Same Love” as a reported 34 couples were married onstage at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Released in 2012, “Same Love” garnered mainstream attention for its discussion of gay and lesbian rights. Just hours before the Grammys, the New York Times reported that several straight and same-sex couples would tie the knot during the performance, with rap veteran Queen Latifah officiating the nuptials, and Madonna joining Macklemore and Lewis.
Noted New Orleans trumpeter Trombone Shorty also jumped onstage with the Seattle duo, who snagged Grammys for Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance (“Thrift Shop”), Best Rap Album (The Heist) and Best New Artist.
The performance, which took place near the end of the show, was one of the more sentimental sets of the evening. “This song is a love song, not for some of us, but for all of us,” Latifah said before introducing Macklemore and Lewis. From there, the rapper unveiled the gospel-infused track amid a church-inspired atmosphere.
Then, as Latifah announced the marriages, Madonna — clad in all white — joined her, Macklemore and Lewis as the newly married couples walked through the arena arm in arm. It was a touching cap on a tolerant track, but we can’t help but ask: Is Queen Latifah really an ordained minister?
Did Queen Latifah finally let the cat out the bag and admit she’s a homosexual?
