Florida Man Sentenced To 14 Years For Giving Girlfriend Abortion Pills
Via Pat Dollard Tampa News reports:
A federal judge Monday afternoon sentenced John Andrew Welden, the man accused of giving a former romantic partner a drug to cause a miscarriage, to 13 years and eight months in prison.
“I don’t think Mr. Welden is an evil person, but he committed an evil act and for that he’s going to have to pay the consequences,” said U.S. District Judge Richard A. Lazzara.
Much has been said about John Andrew Welden, the man accused of giving a former romantic partner a drug to cause a miscarriage.
Monday, for a change, the words will be his own.
Welden, 29, is expected to speak about the case before U.S. District Judge Richard A. Lazzara at a sentencing hearing that begins at 1:30 p.m.
His public comments, until now, have consisted of sparse admissions in the offering of a guilty plea to the judge in September.
But his secretly recorded conversations with investigators and victim Remee Jo Lee last spring showed a man overwhelmed by the prospect of having a child with a woman he didn’t intend to marry. A psychiatrist later suggested that bipolar disorder affected his judgment, leaving him both depressed and manic.
Earlier this month, a prosecutor left open the possibility that Lee, too, will make a statement at the hearing.
Lee, 27, was expected to testify at an earlier evidentiary hearing but was withdrawn from the witness list without explanation.
That hearing concluded Jan. 10 with Judge Lazzara finding that a single dose of the drug misoprostol, which has the brand name Cytotec, caused Lee to lose a nearly seven-week pregnancy.
Welden once faced a mandatory life sentence if convicted of first-degree murder under the federal Unborn Victims of Violence Act. Now, after pleading guilty to consumer product tampering and conspiracy to commit mail fraud, he faces no more than 15 years.
The government and his defense attorneys have jointly recommended a sentence of 13 years and eight months, asking that Welden be permitted to serve it in a low-security prison camp.
Florida just breeds some really sick and twisted individuals!
