Angela Davis: F*ck a Prison, Get Rid of Them

Angela Davis, the pioneer and revolutionary, is calling for an end to the prison system:

The U.S. prison system, in its present state, must be abolished, says University of California-Santa Cruz Professor Emeritus Angela Davis. Davis, a longtime prison reform advocate, is scheduled to speak at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Tuesday, March 24 at 7 p.m. for the keynote address of Emory University’s Women’s History Month. She cited a Pew Research Center report on prisons released earlier this month: “One in every 37 adults in this country is either behind bars or under the direct control of the corrections system — on parole or on probation. Here in Minnesota, it’s one out of every 26 adults. In terms of the entire country, that means 7.3 million people are under the control of the correction system,” Davis said. She sees prisons as “structural racism,” believing that the current U.S. justice system is “based on revenge” and current prisoner rehabilitation methods are not working.

“We have so many people behind bars because of the racialization that enables criminalization,” Davis noted. “We have huge communities criminalized largely because they are under surveillance — those that are subject to greater surveillance are those communities that produce more prisoners. “And in communities that aren’t subject to that type of surveillance, people can do all type of things without getting caught, like [Bernard] Madoff. He stole millions of dollars, and now all they are talking about is whether he will be able to keep his house.”

The U.S. prison population continues to rise, especially among Black men and women, continued Davis, adding that a “national discussion on what we need to do to solve this problem” is badly needed. “Have you heard [President] Obama or anybody in the government talk about this?” she asked the over-capacity crowd. “I don’t want to replace the prison system with something else,” she pointed out, adding that “a purposeful commitment to fix the educational system” would be better. The professor, activist and author of five books, including her Are Prisons Obsolete? (Seven Stories Press, 2003), first came into national prominence in 1969. The FBI later named Davis to their 10 Most Wanted list in 1970 after a gun registered in her name was used in an attempted prison escape; she eventually was jailed for 16 months before finally being acquitted of all charges in 1972. “Freedom means not the abstract ability to do whatever one pleases or not, that is the opposite of being behind bars,” she explained, “but as the access to resources and materials that make it possible to fashion lives, communities and futures. Rights always have been guaranteed for some, but it has been the result of struggle for others. “For some, rights and liberties have been linked to the status quo. For others, it has been linked to radical, revolutionary challenges to the status quo.” As a featured speaker of the St. Cloud State University’s (SCSU) Women’s History Month activities in March, Davis pointed out, “Women’s history always has been about struggles and movements for change that transformed collective lives,” adding that women of color historically had a lot to do with feminism.

She supports President Obama, but not just because he is Black. “I actually was more interested in the politics of the person,” Davis disclosed. “It’s not about who you are, but what you are willing to do. “If Hillary [Clinton] had had a better political position on certain issues, I would have supported her. If there have been a White male candidate who would have been more progressive and radical, I would have gone with him.” Davis warned the audience not to see the president as a one-man problem solver. “Obama is not a Messiah,” she duly pointed out. “Racism has not ended because one Black man and one Black family [is] in the White House.” On the importance of community activism, Davis said, “Everybody who believes in justice and equality must participate in the Movement. What have kept me [involved] are the communities I am associated with. The strength I need comes from other people.”

After her speech, Davis stated, “I don’t see [problems with the prison system] as a separate issue — it is connected with everything else. So, I can’t say that I want [President Obama] to address that more than seeing him address education or health, because they all intertwine.”

Well, we need to put these dumb ass criminals somewhere. The ratio for black men and women in jail is crazy, we do need to make some changes.

Hi Glok, I was just getting ready to post, lol.

Ms. Davis certainly makes some valid points about the impact of incarceration on our community.

From an article this week in the New York Times, nytimes.com/2006/03/20/national/20blackmen.html?scp=1&sq=incarceration%20and%20black%20men&st=cse:

“Incarceration rates climbed in the 1990′s and reached historic highs in the past few years. In 1995, 16 percent of black men in their 20′s who did not attend college were in jail or prison; by 2004, 21 percent were incarcerated. By their mid-30′s, 6 in 10 black men who had dropped out of school had spent time in prison.”

I lost my aunt to a man with no regard for other’s lives and I for one hope he rots in jail. He’s up for parole in 2016 and my family and I had already begun to write letters to the parole board in 06′ emanding they deny his parole and we will do everything to see he getswhat he deserves aznd my aunt can rest in peace.

  • Biased Opinion

My opinion might be a little biased. Right now I’m on probation, and I was issued a violation by the probation officer because I left the state without her permission. Well here in the tri-state area of DC, MD, & VA, it’s easy to go across lines and you wouldn’t think you’re out of town. Besides the fact that I work in MD, and I live in VA, and my probation officer knows this. My fiancee lives in MD, and I do sneak and see her on the weekends. I know not seeing her enough has caused a problem with my relationship. I just don’t think I should be punished just because I went across state lines. What do ya’ll think? I just think some changes need to be made to the prison system. It’s big business. Do you know they charge you ($1) a day to be in the jail I was in (Rappahanock Regional Jail)? I just want ya’ll opinion. Right now I’m supposed to turn myself in and face the music with whatever the judge says…

  • Bloodshot 3rd Eye

Poor Ms. Davis I think her afro roots grew into her brain and are shorting out her synapses.

And BTW Glock…education is seeking and acheiving knowledge. I know a lot of well rounded people white and black that have educated themselves by reading, learning and discovery…but they have a shitty job and no money. The educational system is all about higher certification and frankly that’s better than not having it. It’s up to the individual to improve their knowledge base. I read about history, black philosphers(amongst others) but none of that crap is going to help me fix a COMPUTER problem as is my profession. I would no more have somebody that doesn’t have some way of proving to me that they could do the job do anything for me than I would have the hobo on the corner to do the same thing because the end results could easily be the same. And that is why the model of our educational system is there. That’s why that model is in place all over the world and that is why it is effective. You want “true knowledge” go pick up a book. You want a job? Go to class.

  • Moreaces

We need reform big time with the prison system, but do we still need them hell yes.. No one should be in prison for selling a bag of weed. That is riduculous

  • Bloodshot 3rd Eye

    @Glok

So if you needed open heart surgery you’d let someone operate on you that didn’t have their “certificate”? What about if your engine threw a rod would you take it to a guy you had no proof that could do the job in the first place?

WHAT IS THE ALTERNATIVE? We have genuinely CAH-RAY-ZEE people out there…what is the alternative rehab system for them?

  • ThaTMiXedChiCk!

    Glok9n: The real glok !!!

That doesn’t HAVE to be us though. If you want to own your own business, you can! Nobody stopped Oprah (aka 9 billion)from damn near ruling the world. And nobody can stop you. But first, you have to play by the rules. You want a business loan? Cool. Make sure you have good credit! You want investors to take you seriously? Dress and speak professionaly!

I will give you an example. I saw a billboard for a black owned bank, and one of the bank workers was wearing a black Tee and a chain. I will NEVER step foot inside of that bank. Not because I’m racist, but because I expect the people handling my money to look professional, and not like some thugs. It’s just common sense.

    Hey, Glock 9 & Sydney

    @ The Truth

You have to understand that there are also a whole lot of people who are in prison who have been falsely accused of crimes that they haven’t committed.

But, on to what Sister Davis is talking about. She says that she sees “prisons as structural racism”, which I strongly agree. She also said: “believing that the current U.S. justice system is “based on revenge” and current prisoner rehabilitation methods are not working.

Hell yes, it’s based on revenge – what better way to stymie young black men and women who HAVE GONE to college and who have achieved goals in their lives – but to set them up for crimes they didn’t commit then spend years and years trying to PROVE that they didn’t do these crimes. Hell, by then they’re in their 50′s and 60′s and have lost everything to lawyers fees.

The so-called “rehabilitation”? What being locked up for 23 hours a day is rehabilitation to you? No, people, it’s called TORTURE – INSTITUTIONALIZED TORTURE – at its best.

Lets take Bernie Madoff for instance: Our Prison System wasn’t built for men like Bernie Madoff – THIS IS WHY HIS LAWYERS TRIED TO KEEP HIM OUT OF JAIL AS LONG AS THEY COULD.

More than likely this man will probably have lost his mind by the time is next court date comes around – which is in June.

Now, for our brothers and sisters who HAVE committed crimes in which they need to be REHABILITATED FOR – we need to find another way to rehabilitate them – so that WHEN THEY COME OUT, THEY DON’T DO THE SAME THINGS OVER AGAIN TO PUT THEM BACK IN THERE.

THIS is the point or message that Sister Davis is trying to convey.

    PREACH ON, SISTER, PREACH ON!!!

  • Glok9n: The real glok !!!

My brothers and sisters,we cant discontinue our education with JUST the whitemanz certificationz. We must ENRICH our mindz byond the training of the whitemanz. He iz not going to train us to be smarter than him.Go ahead and get the white manz training, and get your own independent education also. But once you get it dont be foolish enough to work for the benefit of this man ….get your own like MIXEDCHICK said. You are going to be wise from now on i hope!

  • Glok9n: The real glok !!!

    HEY! MISSBLAZE44!

  • Glok9n: The real glok !!!

Use your own knowledge and skills to uplift your own Black Nation.Foreigners travel here all the time to get knowledge and skillz, but they take it back to their homeland for uplifting of their own ppl..that “each one, teach one mentality”! Thatz very wise too.You should be that wise ,We should be that wise Blk folkz!

it is unfortunate that you’re situation is in its present state. however, you’re best bet is to try to get a skill or some kind of education. that will put you over the next person. people with no skills are a dime a dozen. when u get a skill or education it sets u apart from the pack. the higher the education- the more valuable you become.

  • Kigali (Introduction to the New Black Woman 101)

    @facefacts,

Welcome to the pysche of the black American of which black females are the architects.

  • Kigali (Introduction to the New Black Woman 101)

I never liked Angela Davis and her type. She will not be honest about incarceration and the prison system.

If you want to keep black men and an increasing number of black women out of jail black mothers need to have black fathers around. Black men raised with a father in the home will go to jail at the same rates as white men with a father in the home, which is quite low. Having a father in the home ameliorate the very factors that lead black men and an increasing number of black females into prison.

So again black females get married before you have children and raise your children with your husbands so your sons and an increasing number of your daughters will not go to jail or have children too early.

  • Amazing Man

It is sad that a man like Glok can have kids and actually teach them to think like him. Glok’s take on this world is ghetto and small minded. Not saying an education will answer all problems 100%, but life will be a lot harder without it.

One person amongst us all about power back to the black person said this before what i am about to type now and i never knew what he meant until now he was right so i am now agreeing with you

The real Panther movement died as soon as it was established when it was infiltrated by the FBI and other secret groups that own their black asses now No wonder BEYONCE is playing her in a film it really does not matter they have no real intellectual power or respect

all the power has all now but gone to rhetoric just to make traitors save face i listen to what she had to say and i still do not know what the F**K she is talking about

You can’t abolish the prisons i don’t want some dumb murdering/rapist fool living in my street indefinately without controls in place how the hell is education gonna work it does not now when it is FREE why would it help if you offer MORE of it, are you stupid or just crazy i figure both
it’s more intelligent to reform them for better rehabilition in order to reduce the number of people going back there and it is mainly black folks because it is the minority going there no one cares to reform it but if the majority KNEW it was a problem and prisons are there to reinforce re-offending then maybe there would have to be a change

THIS obviously does not need a freedom fighter just simple common sense so what does angela davis really represent?

  • Bloodshot 3rd Eye

    @Glok

My friend there are a lot more uneducated black males out of work than there are educated black males out of work. That number speaks for itself. And using possibly one of THE worst economic periods in American history as proof for your case is a bad idea because whites are getting hit just as hard and according to you it’s THEIR system.

I’m blesed to have my job but I know my education played a big part in getting it and will play a big part in getting ANOTHER one if I lose my job. I don’t know maybe I am being too hard on you or you might be too hard on some parts of the university experience. I’ve got technical degrees and with fields of study like these you HAVE to go to school and you HAVE to get certified because you are not going to learn it any other way even if you picked up the books you probably aren’t going to have access to the equipment to learn what you need to. Almost all highly technical jobs are like that. I.T.,medical,mechcanical, engineering, arcitecture etc…those jobs and fields you don’t just “pick it up”. Now some of the more business oriented fields where basically you dress up in a suit all day but don’t really DO much…yeah I might agree with you there stuff like that is mostly just step and fetch and get in line like a cog.

    @ Glok9n: The real glok !!!
I get what you’re saying, and I agree. I went to Duke University, majoring in English with a minor in Psychology. Graduated in the top percent of my class and went on to law school at Howard. I graduated, passed the bar and started looking for work, all the while being in about $80,000 worth of debt. While racking up this debt, I thought to myself, “it’s ok, I’m going to be a lawyer and I’ll be able to pay this off in 3-5 years.”
Boy, was I wrong! I wasn’t able to get a good paying attorney job in the D.C. area so I relocated to Houston. I found a great paying job as a real estate attorney just to get laid off 2 years after starting because the downfall in real estate these days. Good thing I paid down my debt to about $28,000.
I’m now a criminal justice professor with a law degree that I’m not even using. Funny how I could have been doing the same job I’m doing now YEARSSS ago after graduating undergrad without going into thousands of dollars of debt.
Another thing, being a professor is much more rewarding. Law was great but the hours I had to put in was ridiculous. I wouldn’t recommend anyone be a lawyer unless that’s your only passion and you’re completely dedicated to your work.

With that being said, I do realize the importance of education-I’m a professor!

Angela Davis is an original VICTICRAT…and has been stuck on the same misguided message almost 40 years now. Here is my plan for making prisons obsolete:

1)Want the children you have.Raise them WITH someone who wants to be a parent with you.Be a parent.

2)Your face should be buried in a book.Your hands should be filled with tools that produce & create.
Your brain should should be figuring a way to profit from what you know.Your soul should be in a place where you want to pass positive knowledge on to others.

    3) Don’t break the law.

But keep more in a safe at your house (that only you know about) than in the bank. Get trained as an electrician, get your RN certificate, etc… College isn’t for everyone and NOT everyone can afford to go into thousands of dollars in debt for college.

Very true! And although both my parents wnt to school and got doctorates, my Daddy still hd his journey man’s card. He specialized in electricity, fixing fighter aircraft, business and always kept business running, even way back in the day.

I get some of my aspirations and goals, from my father. I follow his example. Daddy’s been gone since 2000, but I am still running to keep up or catch up, he ha done so much in his life, and I am PROUD to be his daughter.

EXCELLENT ADVICE. GET YOUR EDUCATION AND TRAINING,
NO MATTER WHAT THEY CAN”T TAKE WHAT YOU KNOW.. :)

    @ always knew and DR.FUNK

Exactly! And there’s nothing wrong with learning more than one trade. I’m also going to get into a teacher certification program to get certified as a early education through 12th grade teacher. I’d also like to take classes for a “trade” sometime in the future and get an apprenticeship.
People, educate and empower yourselves, please! No one can take your knowledge from you.

I’m kinda worry that our civil rights leaders have chosen to become the advocates for the criminal population. Like The NAACP is campaigning for equality in drug sentencing, but they haven’t addressed how the influx of ex-cons would affect our communities. For decades, drug culture has made our neighborhoods uninhabitable. as a child, I lived in a chicago project then in one of the worst neighborhoods in San Diego. In both neighborhoods, I have witnessed gang shoot outs in the street. Once our school at to go on lock down for two hours while the gangsters had a shoot out. We were in school a whole hour past quitting time, sitting on the floor listening to gun fire. T

My solution to this problem is a complete restructuring of our education system. In urban areas, we need to realize that the educational model designed for sheltered middle class kids doesn’t fit poor kids. First of all, the focus has to be put on giving these children what they are missing at home. I think this means schools just may have to start clothing and feeding these kids more. We also need some serious counseling and group therapy in our schools. –But once a child turns into an adult and starts committing crime, we need to stop baby sitting them. They are ruining it for the rest of us, kids can’t walk down the street, our old people are afraid to leave their homes, and we can keep businesses in our neighborhoods. Its time to turn our backs on our criminal element, start thinking about those who want to do right.

Its HARD to believe that in the 21st CENTURY and in this ERA of the GLOBAL MARKET that there are STILL some people that are STILL refusing to ACQUIRE the TOOLS that will make them MARKETABLE and COMPETITIVE.

YES, there is a GLOBAL RECESSION right NOW.

AND there are some certain professions that are SUFFERING more than others

BUT will things always remain the SAME? I PRAY NOT.

If you do not ARM yourselves or YOUR children with different SKILLS and AN EDUCATION do not be SURPRISED when FOREIGNERS come in and take those JOBS.

NOT everybody THINKS that ACQUIRING an EDUCATION and VARIOUS OTHER SKILLS is A WASTE OF TIME.

ITS BRUTAL out there ONLY the SKILLED and the TOUGH SURVIVE .

Those that are BUILDING these PRISONS are doing so because they cannot RENNOVATE the PLANTATIONS.

Its up to each INDIVIDUAL to ENSURE that they do not end up in ONE and become a STATISTIC.

  • About it

@Kigali: you were talking about blacks causing gun violence in the educational system. And now you jump to the Second Amendment? That would mean guns don’t kill just black people, all people kill all people.

What she’s saying is right! And let’s stop with all the “extremism,” people.

I feel like reading thru these posts to find an f-ing idiot that will blame rap music. Shame what rap did to Dafur. I will say that they should issue treatment for drug position more and time less. But violent offenders need to be locked up.
