Teen Survives After Stowing Away In Wheel Well During Flight To Hawaii

A California boy who stowed away in the wheel well of a Hawaiian Airlines flight from San Jose to Maui after a fight with his family was discovered wandering airport grounds, the AP reports.

The 16-year-old managed to walk away unscathed, despite the nearly 5 1/2 hour flight with frigid temperatures at 38,000 feet and a lack of oxygen, FBI and airline officials said.

FBI spokesman Tom Simon in Honolulu told The Associated Press on Sunday night that the boy was questioned by the FBI after being discovered on the tarmac at the Maui airport with no identification.

“Kid’s lucky to be alive,” Simon said. “He was unconscious for the lion’s share of the flight. Doesn’t even remember the flight. It’s amazing he survived that.”

Security footage from the San Jose airport verified that the teen from Santa Clara hopped a fence to get to Hawaiian Airlines Flight 45 on Sunday morning, Simon said.

Airline personnel first noticed the boy on the ramp after the flight’s arrival and notified airport security,Hawaiian Airlines spokeswoman Alison Croyle said.

“Our primary concern now is for the well-being of the boy, who is exceptionally lucky to have survived,” Croyle said.

After a medical screening determined he was unharmed the boy was released to child protective services. He has not been charged with a crime, Simon said.

What a blessing, seriously. What was he thinking?! And for all those other kids out there with the same bright idea, don’t try it! SMH.
