American Gangster was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor in a Drama for Denzel Washington. Congrats to all the cast. The Globes are considered to loosely predict Oscar nominations.

The Oscars robbed Denzel for Malcolm X, will they rob the brotha again?

  • i think

Denzel better get his props for this portrayl….there is nobody that does it betta than he!

  • iluvprada

    2nd

  • mr mr

    go denzel

  • http://www.impawards.com/1991/posters/five_heartbeats.jpg BrBro Man

    Denzel is da man -

  • helltothanaw

Who knows.. I want to be optimistic about things and say hell yeah he gonna win, but you know the forces of evil are always at work, unfortunately.

  • elle

I have mixed feeling about this Movie, although Denzel (as usual) gives an excellant performence in this film, the subject matter bothers me.

And I for one will be sick to my stomach if I see Mr. Frank Lucas at any award shows, as he was not a positive infuence in his time.

  • kara kor el

“American Gangster” was good, but I’ve seen better gangster pictures, and to me, Viggo Mortensen was a better lead in “Eastern Promises” (the Russian gangster picture) than Denzel was in AG.

  • Happy 2 B Nappy

I hate that he seems to get nominated when he plays a “Bad Guy”. He should have been recognized for other works as well.

  • i think

OMG!!! I was first?! Do I get a prize…um….NO I don’t…so please what is the big deal??

Denzel was also robbed for John Q….if he doesn’t win for AG, maybe he’ll win for The Great Debaters, that was nominated too for best pic.

  • Bones Jordan

@ Kara, I feel you but imho American Gangster is the third best gangster flick ever behind Scarface, and Goodfelllas. Scratch that, fourth best. The Godfather is always # 1. To answer the question, if he don’t win I won’t feel like he got robbed. Excellent performance but this to me was like when Jordan used to put up 27 or 28. Average for one of the best ever(Denzel I mean)

  • miami man

Yes. Denzel should have 3 oscars right now. 1 for Malcolm X, and 1 for The Hurricane. I believe he is the best actor in hollyweird, and have debated that for years with may friend who think its Pacino or Deniro.

  • FineAsWine

OK I’LL GET MINE FROM HUSTLE MAN, SO MY OPINION DONT COUNT

    GOOD LUCK D

    LOL

  • Bones Jordan

    @ happy 2 be….. cosign

  • MzTee

I know we want our stars to get their props, but has anyone seen the other actors in the movies they were nominated for. Denzel was robbed for his protrayal of Malcolm x and Reuben ‘Hurricane’ Carter. I saw Denzel in ‘American Gangster’ and his performance in this movie comes no where close to what he did in ‘Malcolm X’ and ‘Hurricane.’ Before we start saying we hope the brother isn’t robbed come Oscar time, we need to be sure his performance is far and above the rest of the actors. Quite frankly, this ain’t old boy’s finest.

  • ImKeepingItReal4DaHooks

Denzel is SO fine! He’s blessed whether he gets an award or not.

I would like to see his talents and his body of work recognized by the industry as a significant contribution to 21st century acting.

  • Soul Cry

No, he will win. Why? Cause he plays the stereotypical bad guy. They like that.

  • elle

    @ MzTee

    yes…yes…yes…Hurricane was truth.

He did such a wonderful job in Rueben Hurricane Carter.

For me Hurricane & Malcalm X is some of his best works.

  • Keisha

I think he’ll get it this time because he was playing a bad guy(drugdealer) but he still had a good heart. Maybe this will be the year of the first tie in leading male Oscars because some white dude will do something or he will share the Oscar with Will Smith…

  • Zero Soul

He already got paid back for Malcolm X with his Training Day Oscar. American Gangster was good, but it wasn’t Oscar good.

    @ Miami Man

I’d put Denzel right up there with DeNiro and Pacino, but only when they were all at their peak. In my opinion they’ve all fallen into the same rut. Because they’re “DeNiro” and “Denzel” and their names carry so much weight, they get what they want and no director has the nerve to really push them to step it up. If a director doesn’t push you out of your comfort zone then you just get in a creative rut.

Denzel needs to mix it up and show some range. He gets cast as the proud black man, the cool, heavy hero or antihero, and that’s it. I want to see him do a comedy or a romance. Something that we haven’t seen out of him in a while.

  • versace

I don’t understand how they got Denzel to do this movie? The real guy sounds like a country hillbilly retarded how in they hell did they see the guy and thought of Denzel to portray him. Yes, Denzel is good looking but he hasn’t change his acting skills from a long time ago. I have been going to his movie since day one and his angry actor skills is always the same and he always slams his hand on a table in every movie. His looks are the smoke and mirrors from his acting skills.

  • the truth!

    aye yall…………

is american gangster any good? i havent peeped it yet but heads are telling me its hit or miss. some say its good and some say it sucks. i dig denzel washington as a actor but just the fact that this is a iffy movie. how yall feel about it?

  • Akimbo

    Mmmmm….Chiwetel Ejiofor…

  • M-DADDY OAKLANDS FINEST

Man that movie was the BOMB. Denzel really played the part. If he does not get it we as black people knows why

  • Zero Soul

    @ Akimbo

Damned straight. Can’t wait to see what that man does in the next few years.

  • newbz

Oh course Denzel is going to get it…..He’s a black man playing a drug dealer…He got the oscar when he was a black man playing a crooked drug dealing cop….How about we have a black actor play a respectable role and get nominated!!

  • miami man

    @Zero Soul

I believe his only comedy Carbon Copy, and his romantic role was in Mississippi Masala; but I understand want you’re saying. I could also throw in Courage under Fire, The Pelican Brief and Crimson Tide as showcasing his versitility. Hollyweird does seem to Pigeon hole these actors once they become large; thats why Johnny Depp is also a great actor; the versitility.

  • dayg715

they already gave him one. by default, i might add. denzel’s oscar collecting days are over. funny, why isn’t anyone complaining about him being recognized for portraying a murderous drug dealer and a crooked cop, yet halle was cursed to the ground for “banging a white man”, like you all love to believe is the reason she won her oscar? denzel has done more to inforce stereotypes of black people than any other black actor out there. at least will smith plays upstanding characters, andif you notice, he doesn’t have an oscar. hmmm….

  • CubaLinda

He already got paid back for Malcolm X with his Training Day Oscar. American Gangster was good, but it wasn’t Oscar good.

^^^ He shouldnt get “pay back” he should just get his props as he earns it. American Gangsta was a great movie… Oscar?? But I think the Oscar is more about his dead- on performance in the portrayal and not necessarily the content although that has to have some influence too. Denzel just brings that star power to everything that he does, IMO…

  • just ice

i bet you if denzel banged a white man in a movie, y’all would still say how great an actor he is.

  • CubaLinda

    I think he has another comedy to his credit… The Mighty Quinn with Robert TOwnsend { I loved that film…}

  • CubaLinda

    He banged Eva Mendes, close enough… {Yeah, I know she is Cuban too…}

  • thebigish

american gangster had a killer first half and fell apart into a run of the mill straight to dvd flick.

    my big complaints -

the close up on rza’s wu tattoo when he was introduced. come ON – that broke the illusion for me.

the gloss over of frank lucas – his illiteracy and the hit on his own brother.

denzel couldn’t sell that fur get up. sorry man, that was comical.

he’s got talent, but it’s like he’s got a deck of expressions and tricks and dude’s on autopilot.

give him the damn award, however.

  • http://www.myspace.com/birdshu Bird

I’m just glad he got the nomination. I didn’t like Malcolm X so I was cool with that. The book was a million times better than the movie.

  • anonymous

denzel is not going to get an oscar. he got his ‘training day’ oscar because russel crowe, who was the intended winner, punched out one of the academy voters like a week before that ceremony. now that crowe is back on the scene, (rather conveniently in the same movie as denzel, i might add) and his public persona as a ‘hothead’ has calmed down a bit, this time around, there is no way in hell they will give denzel an oscar over russel crowe a second time.

  • andie

we’ve all heard the stereotypes in the roles of denzel and halle but at this point…that’s the roles that they can get and they do a fantastic job. i don’t think we as black people should be undermining their stellar performances in any way.

an oscar is an oscar…but i don’t know if Denzel will get it this time. I think he should win for best actor but the movie should not win for best picture.

  • Soul Cry

    @andie

I don’t believe we are not giving them credit as actors, but simply pointing out that OTHERS only recognize them for stereotypical roles. We give them all due credit and respect, or at least I do, but wish that society would as well.

  • Zero Soul

    @ CubaLinda

“He shouldnt get “pay back” he should just get his props as he earns it.”

Yeah, it *should* work like that, but it never does. Scorsese’s Oscar last year was nothing but payback. Black or white, it’s not always just about the performance. If it was, Denzel would have one for Malcolm X. Anybody who doesn’t see the absolute genius of that performance is blind. The Academy screwed up and knew it for years and paid him back the first chance they got. He had a shot with Hurricane, but the subject matter was too controversial. Training Day was an excellent performance in a well-above-average drama, and that did it.

  • http://www.myspace.com/birdshu Bird

    the truth!

    aye yall…………

some say its good and some say it sucks. i dig denzel washington as a actor but just the fact that this is a iffy movie. how yall feel about it?

    ****************************************************

To me it was just aight. It wasn’t terrible, but they went out of their way to give Russell Crowe a meaty part which took away from the story. Nearly every Russell scene seemed out of place and felt like watching a commercial that interrupted the movie. I was more excited by he dirty partner than him. Russell got a lot of screen time.

  • Just Sit And Be Pretty

“Oh course Denzel is going to get it…..He’s a black man playing a drug dealer…He got the oscar when he was a black man playing a crooked drug dealing cop….How about we have a black actor play a respectable role and get nominated!!”

@ Newbz, in 1964, Sidney Poitier won an Oscar for Lillies in the Field, a movie about an ex-GI/construction worker whose car breaks down, he stops at a missionary with a bunch of German nuns and helps them build a new church or school or something. It was a good movie…

  • miami man

    @Cubalinda

I should have my ass whooped for forgeting The Mighty Quinn,; one of his best. To the people talking about stereotypical performances, all hollyweird movies are stereotypical. They can’t all play Jesus. They play murderers (monster oscar winner), drugged up dealers (Scarface 2 oscars), hired killers (unforgiven 2 oscars), etc.

  • http://myspace.com/thagrindaholic BLUNTBLAZER

DENZEL IS A MASTER AT THIS ACTIN THANG

    HE CAN DO ANY ROLE

    http://WWW.MYSPACE.COM/THAGRINDAHOLC

    NUTHIN BUT THAT GHETTO KNOCK

  • Crap Talker…

I think this is “Rent a Kneegrow” for The Golden Glove Nomination….if you haven’t noticed it’s like they need a token black every year now so black folks don’t cry “racism” or “lack of ethnic diversity”….

  • Moreaces

    Congradulatons Denzel!!! Hope you win.

  • BrothaMan

He should have won an oscar for Malcolm X and Hurricane, but dont sleep on Cry Freedom as Steve Biko and at least a supporting Oscar for his role in to me on of the most underated War Movies “GLORY” Denzel did his thang. American Gangster I dont believe is his best work although I heard he really does is thing with the Great Debaters and since I went to an HBCU thats sounds like a great movie.

Honestly I think he was better in Remember the Titans than he was in this role.

  • constance

The movie was good. It focused to much on the white officer. The movie should have 98% on Lucas and the criminal world, and his family.

  • flawda

I personally think Pacino and Deniro are the two best actors in Hollywood, but Pacino did not deserve to beat out Denzel for Malcom X. They gave that award to Pacino the same way they gave it to Scorsesse for The Departed, for all the years of great work and never won.

  • KillaBeeSwarm

    No Country For Old Men

  • Zero Soul

I think KillaBeeSwarm called it. I think Tommy Lee Jones has this one locked up.

  • ya Mama Busy?

Regarding Denzel and his Malcolm X nom

Spike Lee, in an interview with Cathy Hughes, put it in perspective about how the Oscars roll. He said that Oscar winners are typically awarded after they’ve cranked out some decent roles over the years.

The Best Actor prize that Pacino beat out Denzel for (Scent of a Woman) wasn’t Pacino’s best work BY FAR, and had been passed over for years for his roles in Godfather 1 and 2, Dog Day Afternoon, not to mention Scarface, etc. So when the crap ass movie Scent of a Woman came along, he got the not and 30-something Denzel had to wait his turn. And like Pacino, Denzel was passed up for other good roles and landed an okay role in Training Day.

Not saying it’s fair; not saying there aren’t exceptions, but that’s exactly how Spike said it rolled.

  • Morpheus

“The tried to kill my WIFE!!!”

  • ELove

Yeah Denzel got robbed for Malcom-X But I can name at least five other roles that he should’ve won an Oscar for besides “American Gangster”

Remember these great role: The Hurricane, Remember the Titans, Philadelphia, Crisom Tide, Devil in a Blue Dress… I quite sure there are others to mention ;-)

  • MJ

Honestly…..I didn’t like AG all that much. And I hate to say it, but he doesnt deserve an award for this movie and he shouldn’t have got one for Training Day!! Although Training Day was entertaining, Sean Penn was nominated for I Am Sam that year….He should have won hands down!! Don’t believe me compare the two performances and get back at me!! LOL!

And be honest with me…..These award shows aren’t for the average movie go-er!! Some of the movies and performances nominated haven’t even hit theaters yet or if they did, they were shown in limited theaters maybe for the past week. I mean this, the Oscars, and the Grammies to a certain degree are for the folks in Hollywood!! Where is The Wire, Why did I get Married, or SuperBad?? Maybe its me but this is what a lot of people were on this year. Not freakin Charlie Wilson’s War or the Great Debaters which don’t come out for at least another week!! They can pick who they wanna cause it wont reflect what us average movie go-ers think!!

  • kara kor el

    @MJ

“Why did I get married” wasn’t that great. Most of Tyler Perry’s movies aren’t that great (more like all of Tyler Perry’s movies aren’t that great). They’re fluffy and wholesome, but not award worthy. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association and the Academy shouldn’t lower their standards for Tyler Perry. AG getting nominated is a reflection of the average movie goer because AG made a lot of money. Charlie Wilson’s War looks good, and it will also probably make a lot of money, which means a lot of people, average movie goers, will have seen it. There’s a mix of films both indy and mainstream getting nominated for awards, like it should be. The movie to check out, if you haven’t already seen it is “No Country for Old Men.” Javier Bardem killed it as the hitman.

  • ChineseChickenWingz

denzel, morris, and will are working their asses off because they r the only 3 black actors in hollywood

  • Lili MF Monster

    @Mz. Tee

So right!!! Denzel was good in the movie, but I’ve seen him in better roles. Viggo Mortensen in ‘Eastern Promises’ has a much better performance – for real yall. And American Gangster better not win. You could still see the microphone hanging over in some of the interior shots!!!!

  • Lea

    Subject:

Denzel Washington, and Broo ks Army Medical Center

Don’t know whether you heard about this but Denzel Washington

and his family visited the troops at Brook Army Medical Center

in San Antonio , Texas (BAMC) the other day. This is where soldiers who have been evacuated from Germany come to be hospitalized in the United States , especially burn victims. There are some buildings there called Fisher Houses . The

Fisher House is a Hotel where soldiers’ families can stay, for little or no charge, while their soldier is staying in the Hospital. BAMC has quite a few of these houses on base, but as you can imagine, they are almost filled most of the time.

While Denzel Washington was visiting BAMC, they

gave him a tour of one of the Fisher Houses. He asked how much one of them would cost to build. He took his check book out and wrote a check for the full amount right there on the spot. The soldiers overseas were amazed to hear this story and want to get the word out to the American public, because it warmed their hearts t o hear it.

The question I have is why do:

Alec Baldwin, Madonna, Sean Penn and

other Hollywood types make front page news with their

anti-everything America trash and Denze l Washington’s Patriotism

doesn’t even make page 3 in the Metro section of any newspaper except the Local newspaper in San Antonio.

A true American and friend to all in uniform!

  • thebigish

on point about the excessive russell crowe storyline. his divorce from his wife was lame, a big digression.

yeah, viggo and that psycho with the beatles hair killed it this year.

now when the hell are they going to make the marvel black panther superhero story.

    t’challa yall

  • Zero Soul

    @ Lea

That story is true, mostly. Denzel gave a bunch of money but it didn’t go down exactly like that email claims. Go to snopes.com and search for “Denzel” for the real story.

I’m not disputing that he’s generous as hell, I just hate those chain e-mails that claim things that aren’t true.

  • ELove

@thebigish… Wasn’t Wesley offered that role???

If so they better make it soon BEFORE his trial for Tax Evasion comes up ;-)

  • jennifer

Probably, he was much beeter in malcolm. AG was ok it would not have been that good if Denzel wasn’t in it. You knw you have to act like an idot danm near to recive an award that is the only way they want to portray us.

  • NubianGoddez

An oscar does not matter as this point, he dosen’t need yt to validate his talent it has well been established he’s one of the greatest actors of our time!!

  • MJ

    @ Kara Kor el

Just so we are clear, I never said the movies I listed were good, only that people were on them this year. To be for real I don’t like Tyler Perry’s productions at all. They seem to be the same…at least Madea wasn’t used in this one!! But all I’m saying is, that I cannot get hype off an award show nominating movies that I haven’t seen. Mind you its not because I don’t want to see them, (I’ve NOTHING but good things about No Country of Old Men!!) but because they’re not out yet or I refuse to drive an hour out of the way to see it at a theater where the people wont greet me when I hand them my money/ticket…….But thats a different subject.

Trust..In no way do I want The Hollywood Foreign Press Association and the Academy to lower their standards, I just don’t think the average movie goer has seen majority of the films nominated. But hey maybe I’m below average when it comes to movies. Guess thats why they have the People’s Choice Awards for simple people like me!! Like I never understood how movies and music get nominated for these awards before they are released to the public. I do agree with you that AG is by far the realest representation of what I consider a real movie goer’s movie. But I still dont think that bamma deserves an award!!

  • StephJr

You CANNOT compare Malcolm X to American Gangster….

  • Lili

    Happy 2 B Nappy

I hate that he seems to get nominated when he plays a “Bad Guy”. He should have been recognized for other works as well.

^^^Yea. I’d rather see him nominated for “The Great Debators”.

  • missregan

Ummmm…American Gangster was ok…nothing spectacular. He played a role not that different from Training Day. Denzel was good in American Gangster…but he keeps playing the same roles.

  • CubaLinda

There is so much more involved in the Oscar nominating process than we can ever care to understand. The eligibility varies annually according to the board and it gets very technical~ beyond ticket sales and public response. Some of the criteria can be as specific as the type of film the motion pic was developed on, how many frames, the projection/ resolution… Then the film has to be released in certain locations for a said period of time, the credits, distribution has to run in a particular order etc… All these things and others determine whether certain films even qualify and sometimes production studios dont want to invest that much in the film for the benefit of an Oscar- they are just interested in the sales, so they disqualify themselves. I cant say that ALL the films Denzel was duped on were disqualfied this way, but its probably likely…

  • Unkle Kracka

densel wun those oskars do to fermative akshun, rusel krow gonna win, hes the only reeson why anyone wint to see a moovy bout a bunch of dopesellin niggras, heh, heh

  • Da Real

I don’t think the movie was all that great; it was kind of over hyped. I’m a true fan of the man but this movie wasn’t even in his top 5 maybe top 10. If he wins it’s just because of his name or lack of competition.

  • Shire

What a group of stupid guys! The magazine HOLLYWOOD GOSSIP reported that Akon uploaded some of theirhot pictures to the website seekingsugar and wants to find a sugar girl there..but i guess no girl will go to them if they are in trouble now!

  • Mary J Blige

pleaze. yall only love him because he is married to dark meat. You would not support he did a Taye Diggs. and the whole film is sooo overratted (including Denzel’s performance). There is only ever one decent black film a year so I guess thats why y’all acting like this

  • DM

I want him to get nominated for playing a good guy. Why not best director for The Great Debaters?

  • Unkle Kracka

Heh, heh an oskar for one of those the little niggras who kould getto movies, i dont thank so boy, heh, heh

  • memchee

yep, they really robbed him for Malcom X, but forest can win for idi amin.

  • qiuye

Really? They were said to appeared on the luxury club of Tom’s friend http://www.Richcupids.com, just for millionaire&celebrities.

  • Shanice

I loved the movie Malcolm X ..I too believe he should of won an Oscar for it ..Spike Lee should of gotten best director also ..he was robbed also ..

  • anonymous

Yea he got passed over for Malcolm X, but, he got it for Glory and Training Day. Both are beautiful movies; can’t stop watching them.

He is one actor that regardless whether he receives an award, his movies do great at the box-office. I think he should have won an Oscar for Man on Fire. He is a brilliant actor.

  • anonymous

I don’t know how many of you know this, but, for years Denzel has revealed this in interviews. The last was on Oprah.

He’s said that a woman told his mother when he was young that he would preach to the world. When I heard him say this years ago. I began looking at his movies differently. They each have a biblical lesson in them. He said on Oprah a few months ago, that, Training days’ message was “the wages of sin is death”. I had thought that was it’s message.

I think Man on Fires’ message is “greater love has no man than he lay down his life for his friend”.

I look back and I think Ricochets’ message was, “vengence is mine says the Lord”-I could be wrong though.

Whether Denzel wins an award or not, does not matter, he is actually teaching and touching many people with his movies.

  • Macon

No African American home should be without the book called, WHAT MAKES THE GREAT GREAT, by Black writer, Dennis P. Kimbro, Ph.D. Please pick up a copy for yourself this holiday because it will change your way of thinking about your place in America.

  • Give Angela Bassett an Oscar!

Thank GOD!!! I swear I got called the biggest hater here at college for not thinking American Gangster was that great!!! Same script different cast!It was like a power point presentation of a movie tome! And Why did I get married was dense as well. Now when they give Angela Bassett an oscar, then I’ll be happy!

  • Lik_Wid_Cherry

They will. It will be him and Russell Crowe up for the leading Oscar and Russell will win it, that’s why Denzel is nominated for the Golden Globe…they’ll give that one to him..watch and see.

    ^^^^^^^

Oh Yeah, I agree. Angela Bassett should have won an Oscar years ago for ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It’. But they’ll rather give it to Halle b/c she got naked with Billy Bob. Hollywood has issues, period.

  • Unkle Kracka

Heh, heh angela bassethound shooldve won the oskar for her nekid shower seen in one of those erly friday the 13th moovy when she had to do the kastin kowch mambo to get moovy rolls, heh, heh

  • Beast

I agree with most of the posters, however I was thinking the same that Denzel wins again for playing a bad guy and how messed up that was, UNTIL Denzel said he didnt care aslong as the work was appreciated for what it was and he’ll gladly take a Oscar for the work the gets a nod. He chooses these roles they don’t choose him. As far as Russell Crowe get the lead actor nod it won’t happen because Denzel is the top bill on the movie Russell may or may not get a nod for supporting actor. As for Angela Bassett I do agree she should have gotten the Oscar for “WHATS LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT” SHE actually turn down the role that Halle accepted for Monster’s Ball, Because of that scene you speak of LIK_WID_CHERRY. Hollywood does have issues, I have been working as a production assistant now for 5 years now. And I have been blessed to have worked on some of the movies that we are discussing. Now, we says that AMERICAN GANGSTER was over hyped and not that good, remember it is about someones life AND TOM CRUISE WANTED TO DO THE FILM WITH DENZEL, THE FIRST TIME AROUND AND HE SAID NO, because he didnt want to do this film on the heels of Training Day. The Hollywood Foreign Press will give Denzel the Golden Globe but he will not when the Oscar, he will be nominated however. A little something about Halle though, she WILL NOT DO A FILM WITH A LEADING BLACK MAN BECAUSE SHE DOESN’T WANT TO BE LINKED TO “BLACK CINEMA” THAT IS COMING FROM WHITE STUDIO HEADS THAT SENT HER DOZENS OF NOT GREAT BUT GOOD SCRIPTS. SO, I DON’T CONSIDER HALLE APART OF BLACK HOLLYWOOD. WILL SMITH HAS CROSSED OVER AND CONTINUALLY WORKS WITH BLACK ACTRESSES ALL THE TIME. ONE MORE TID BIT… THE FIRST DIRECTOR CONNECTED TO AMERICAN GANGSTER WAS ANTONIE FUQUA, FROM TRAINING DAY, IT WAS TAKING FROM HIM AND GIVEN TO RIDLEY SCOTT, GREAT DIRECTOR BUT… I WOULD HAVE LIKE TO SEE WHAT HE WOULD HAVE DONE WITH THE SCRIPT. JUST ONE LITTLE OPINION…

  • Marquis de Sade

It wasn’t so much taken away from Antoine Fuqua as it was put on the backburner, due to budgetary concerns by Universal. At the time they(universal) didn’t feel that Washington’s overseas B.O. marketability didn’t justify the over 100 million dollar bugdet. Antoine Fuqua balked at the suggested budget cuts and bailed from the project…Now the cool thing about it was Washington’s contract at the time had a Play or Pay clause stipulation which forced Universal to pay him his 20 million dollar signing fee. Universal, after spending so much money in pre-production, decided to recast the Washinton’s role with Don Cheadle and a new director (i forget which), but due to creative differences the project was scrapped altogether. The producers (Ron Howard & Brian Grazer) after a couple of years decided to resurrect the project by offering it Ridley Scott and re-offering the role back to Washington for another 20 million, and convincing Russell Crow to take the Co-Lead, thus assuring the films overseas B.O. profitability. All in all Washington has made over 40 million due to Universal’s indecisiveness.

  • Beast

@Marquis de Sade, couldn’t have said it better myself… thanks for the correction on, them taken it away from Fuqua…

  • Unknown

Why does Mr. Washinton have to play a bad black man to win an award? Personally I thought his performance was just ok. After the real Gangster’s interview, I only saw Mr Washinton not the character. I have the up most respect for Mr. Washington…I cant wait to see the Great Debater.

  • Tyrone M. Wild

the images of the characters of recent black oscar winners have been not good for us. examples:

    Idi Amin??

“make me feel good” mista white man Halle???

Its hard out here for a PIMP??(why didn’t fight the power win on, PIMP??)

fat girl with an attitude J-Hud in dream girls

    show me the money coonery???

crooked black cop vs. the hero white cop

now lets celebrate a character who poisoned our people in large amounts

@Tyrone M. Wild, I totally agree with you! Thats the sruggle that we have in hollywood right now. Trust me, it isn’t about black and white though… These people out here it is ALL ABOUT GREEN… Sam Jackson, although he is a fine actor, Sam makes est 8million per, he’ll do 3 to 5 movies a year, he doesnt think about the roles he’s doing and doesnt care what we (black people) think (snakes on a plane)… ALL MAJOR STUDIOS WILL MAKE THE FILMS THAT PUT ASSES IN THE SEATS… “I AM LEGEND” WILL DO 30+ MILLION THIS WEEKEND AT THE BOX OFFICE, IF STUDIOS THOUGHT THAT DOING A POSITIVE ALL BLACK CAST FILM WOULD DO MAJOR NUMBERS THEY WILL MAKE THEM, IF WE AS BLACK PEOPLE SUPPORTED THEM… THERE IS TALK OF DOING A “GREEN LATERN” FILM WITH—–HOLD ON MY BLACK PEOPLE—- TAYE DIGGS IN THE LEAD… IF IT IS MADE; IF TAYE IS CASTED; WILL WE GO AND SUPPORT HIM AND THAT FILM??? More FILMS NOT MOVIES NEED TO BE MADE BY BLACK FILMMAKERS AND PRODUCERS, AND I BELIEVE THAT BLACK COMMUNITY WILL COME AND SUPPORT THESE FILMS. ALICIA KEYS IS ABOUT TO BE IN A HUGE BIO- PIC THAT WILL BE PRODUCED BY OPRAH… WHICH IS COOL, BUT BLACK PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS DOING BIO-PICS AND NOT ORIGINAL MATERIAL. THERE NEEDS TO BE A BALANCE AND THERE IS NONE. I LOVE ALICIA HOWEVER SHE IS NOT A ACTOR BY TRADE AND IF THIS FILM IS MADE I’M ALMOST POSITIVE SHE GET CRITICAL ACCLIAM FOR IT, BUT HOW MANY BLACK ACTRESSES OUT THERE OUR GETTING LEADS IN FILMS, COMPARED TO HAVING THEM ALL IN ONE FILM… I.E, “THIS CHRISTMAS” “SOUL FOOD” AND SO ON… SO, I AM LOOKING FOWARD TO “THE GREAT DEBATER”. AND A NEW FILM WITH MORGAN FREEMAN AND JACK NICHOLSON SHOULD ALSO BE COMING SOON… WILL SEE WHAT HAPPENS WITH HIS PERFORMANCE.

Actually, according to Boxoffice.com, I Am Legend is on track to 78 – 80 million in its’ first 3-day opening weekend.

  • destiny

yeah, he’ll probably win something. He played the role of a thug and gangster who chose money over the betterment of his community. Whitey loves to see Denzel in these “bad guy roles”.

  • nunya bizness

The role wasn’t worthy of an Oscar.

All awards are rigged and overrated.

Does anyone know that Denzel has a much better movie out called The Great Debaters. No, because if blacks are going to be just as good as whites it’s going to be at selling drugs.

Kudos that Blacks/African americans have broken into the film genre, have television shows depicting ourselves. Consciously or unconciously, racism still persists. Look at any, and I mean any, objective study and there are MAJOR discrepancies in everything from health care, lending practices, salary, etc. We get many breaks, we have squandered many opportunities, but it remains that others will not understand that we still turn on the t.v. and see mostly White, everywhere we turn it is mostly white dominated. That being said, it is truly sad that we haven’t pulled ourselves up by the boot straps even more. So many advantages but we run around here degrading ourselves and each other. Focusing more on stupidity, bopping our heads, competing for materialistic or physical attention. Cutting each other down rather than bringing each other up. We are to blame and the industry is to blame for glorifying gratuitous sex, violence, distractions that keep us moving so fast toward competition, gluttony, and base desires that we forget our true reason for being on earth. Yeah have some fun, but first and foremost, THE LORD. Denzel/Halle are talented, but if the Awards want to be taken seriously, give it when due, not just to appease. Training day depiction was not deserving/ Kids this should be fictitious pasttime seen only when you are able to discern reality from fiction (though the depiction is very ghetto-like) and M. Ball, had Angela Basset done it, she wouldn’t have won. Angela has been around more and is as talented, if not more so, than Halle. Why did Halle get it, though she had some good films? Just to appease us. The Awards have lost their honesty and are run by the MAJORITY. They may recognize and appreciate true talent, in all forms/colors, but are still skewed.

Me again……and not to mention that from early on the sin of creating images, JESUS, with no true understanding of his likeness, as a WHITE man, has on increased the supremist thought that WHITE is superior. Should blacks pray to a white Being? NO…Should whites pray to a black Being? NO should any ethnicity/nationality pray to a Being that represents a nationality/ethnicity other than their own. NO…WHY…because it puts the nationality/ethnicity being prayed to in a superior position. THIS is why it was a sin to create an image of which we had no true knowledge. None of us know what the LORD looks like and getting into that whole thing that JESUS is the White son of the LORD is another topic. This is not a rant about my religion versus yours, it is trying to give insight that it is truly an abomination and embarrasment that praying to a Being of any particular color, in this case WHITE JESUS causes racial division in and of itself. Be objective and think about it.
