Are we shocked because dark-skinned women were excluded from the casting or are we shocked because they were stupid enough to put this in the advertisement? We know there is still a color complex in the black community. Young Berg and Neyo were just dumb enough to say it out loud, many blacks say or think it. We can’t complain about not being considered beautiful by “mainstream” America, when we don’t consider ourselves beautiful. Companies who market to black people will continue to market mostly light-skinned women or other women of other races, because they know many Blacks consider them the most attractive. Black people are the ones who use the term “pretty to be black”, “good hair” and “bad hair”. Black people are the ones who tell their children to get out of the sun before they get too black. Black people call each other burnt, burple, crispy, etc. Blacks call each other nappy-headed hoes, so why the outrage when other races say it. If I was the marketing exec for Ciroc, I would not have to consult with Diddy to know what kind of women he was looking for. Look at all his ads, there is maybe, one token brown woman. For the people who say lighter people sell and are more marketable, it is only that way because WE make it that way. If black people like Diddy, with decision-making power, decided to use more brown/dark-skinned women in advertisements, music videos, movies, etc., you bet we would become more marketable (not saying women should aspire to be video “vixens” or sell liquor). Look at our videos, the majority of the women are not even light skinned anymore, they aren’t even black most of the time unless they need some booty shots, then you will maybe see a black girl or two.
The movies, have less and less black female leads even when the main actor is black, now they are replacing black women with latinas for black men. It’s easy for someone to call me a hater for pointing this out, and trust me I really am not a hater. It’s just that our men don’t fight for us, and they don’t choose us when they are running things, they allow whites or their own warped ideas of what is hot to help them decide that a non-black chick would be more “appealing” for this promo or whatever. You know if black women were calling the shots that many of our male love interests would be black men. And has anyone seen a rise in black women in rock and country videos over the past few years??? No we have not, because rock videos and country music video artists hire women who look like them in their stuff. Only black men have made it a standard to not match their women in scenarios like those. It gives the illusuion to the world that we as black women are not worthy, or beautiful enough for our own men. It’s sad to see that even though we have gotten this far our own men still make us face the pain and humilation that whites do to us , when competing in the world of entertainment. I wish race generally did not matter in issues like this, and people just picked who was best, and even though people love to claim how they love “all shades” at the end of the day, the least black looking model is always chosen and propped up for display.

Sad as it may be the dark skinned sister is usually the invisible woman in the media. Men can range from Terrance Howard to Idris Elba and be seen as fine. The model call is terrible, but I guess I give them credit for saying what a lot of people think.

Nevertheless, you have to be more professional when your name is going to advertise something, or promote something. This says more about his need to become more business oriented and smart about the things he puts his name on.
