Florida Man Shoots Woman At Kid’s Water Gun Fight

A childrens’ water fight at a Lake City complex last month escalated into a clash among adults last weekend that left one woman shot in both of her legs, officials said.

Lake City police reported that neighbors were talking in the breezeway of the Windsong Apartments at 11 p.m. Saturday when a man approached them and opened fire, hitting Leah M. Depoe and several nearby vehicles.

The suspect, Eldredge A. Henderson, 30, ran away and hid in an apartment in building No. 5 of the complex on Southwest Windsong Circle.

Emergency responders arrived, and Depoe was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the report said.

Police officers and Columbia County Sheriff’s deputies surrounded the building and ordered Henderson to come out. After several minutes, he emerged and was taken into custody.

Investigators recovered a Tec-9 semi-automatic 9mm handgun from the storm drain of a nearby retention pond.

Investigators said Tuesday the incident stemmed from Henderson’s children getting wet during a water fight in the complex on April 29. Witnesses told police Henderson became angry and tried to fight several adults before being told to leave. He later returned with a firearm and began waving it around until police were called, the report said. Responding officers found no firearm that evening, and no arrests were made at that time after the victim declined to file charges.

Henderson was charged with aggravated assault, firing a weapon and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was being held on Tuesday at the Columbia County Detention Center on no bond.
