A few years back, there was talk of Hollyweird actress Angelina Jolie landing the role of Cleopatra in an upcoming biopic and it’s now being reported that not only is the project currently in the works; it may also be Angelina’s last role before she throws in the big screen acting towel.
Angelina Jolie has a hit on her hands — Maleficent marks her biggest box-office debut ever — but she’s already thinking retirement.
In a BBC interview, Jolie confirmed that her long-rumored Cleopatra project is still in the works.
“We’ve been working on it,” she said. “There’s been lots of different ideas of directors and lots of different discussions. The script has been written by Eric Roth, who is a dear friend and a brilliant writer.” Roth wrote the screenplays for Forrest Gump, The Horse Whisperer, Munich, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. This film version of Cleopatra is supposedly based on the book Cleopatra: A Life by Stacy Schiff, and there have already been some whispers of controversy over a white woman playing the infamous Egyptian pharaoh: Though some believe she is ethnically Greek, some experts insist the truth is much more complicated.
Jolie admitted to the BBC that the undertaking is very tricky — and just might be the last movie in which she stars. Because when it comes to Cleopatra, Jolie says:
“She’s complicated, it’s complicated to get this one right. I think we’re getting there. It’s getting close. I imagine the preparation for it is going to be big. It’s one of those that you think maybe that’s the one you put everything into and that’s where you end it, that’s where you finish — in a great way. What could you do beyond that one?”
Surely there’s at least ONE actress of color that would nail this role, riiiigght? What do you think of Angelina being cast as Cleopatra?
