Brookyln Man Arrested After Stabbing Two Children In Elevator

Police arrested a suspect in the fatal stabbing of a 6-year-old boy in Brooklyn hours after authorities said his DNA was linked to a knife found at the crime scene, ending a three-day manhunt.

Via Wall Street Journal reports:

Daniel St. Hubert was taken into custody around 8 p.m. Wednesday in a residential section of the South Ozone Park neighborhood of Queens, police said. He wasn’t immediately charged.

The arrest came minutes after Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner William Bratton held a news conference calling on New Yorkers to help in the search. At that point, police were tracking Mr. St. Hubert by monitoring his cellphone, a law-enforcement official said.

Mr. St. Hubert was wanted for allegedly killing Prince Joshua Avitto and critically injuring 7-year-old Mikayla Capers in an elevator of the Boulevard Houses in East New York on Sunday. Police have said he followed the children, who were heading upstairs for an ice pop.

Mr. St. Hubert, 27 years old, has nine prior arrests and was paroled on May 23 after being held on domestic-assault charges, said New York Police Department Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce.

He added that Mr. St. Hubert had previously assaulted a Department of Correction officer and an NYPD officer.

Police flooded the area around the stabbing after the attack, near Schenck and Stanley avenues and increased patrols around schools.

Sunday’s attack may also be related to the nearby fatal stabbing of 18-year-old Tanaya Copeland on Friday, police have said. Mr. Boyce said police are still determining if Mr. St. Hubert is also a suspect in that attack.

At the news conference Wednesday, police said they believed Mr. St. Hubert altered his appearance by shaving his beard and hair.

“I ask all New Yorkers to help in this investigation in any way you can. Do it for this grieving family, do it for all of us, so we can be safe,” Mr. de Blasio said.

Police recovered a Dura Edge by Imperial Knife—the model hasn’t been manufactured since 2004—at the crime scene, officials said.

The city Office of the Medical Examiner received the knife Sunday and spent about 36 hours processing the DNA—considered to be a fast turnaround, a second law-enforcement official said.

The DNA lifted from the knife was uploaded into a state offender registry, the official said. A match was found on Wednesday and turned over to the NYPD.

Mikayla, who has been interviewed by detectives at the hospital, told police that she and Prince were in the elevator with the suspect when the man told the children to “shut up,” before stabbing them.

Pray for these babies!
