T-Boz: “They Get Mad When I say This…It Was All About Beyonce Anyway”

T-Boz didn’t hold back a thing in her latest interview with AOL Black Voices. Although, she got the ax yesterday on The Apprentice, that didn’t stop her from very VOCAL about more than a few issues including a TLC film, the ATL Housewives and Bey and Kelly’s D-Child drama:
So we’re starting to see more of you on ‘Celebrity Apprentice.’ Did you intentionally play low-key in the beginning?
If you don’t keep up drama, they don’t show you anyway, and I just feel like they have their favorites. If you’re not into it then Trump’s not into you, and that’s just the way I feel about it. He likes poker, he likes golf, Playboy bunnies and he likes sports and that’s his thing.
You had your big win on episode four and won a check for your charity. How did that feel?
It was a bittersweet night for me because I won, but they made it so depressing with the alcohol thing with Dennis Rodman so it almost took the glory out of winning. As far as me, it was heartwarming because sickle cell is something I’m very passionate about being that I have the disease and I’m a national spokesperson. I do a lot of things because I want to help others, but I want to be that chick that’s here to see my daughter grow old. I want to be a grandmother. I want to cheer for all of us, and it’s really a personal struggle and a fight for me.
Let’s shift gears a little. Your good friend Kandi Burruss is the new member of ‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta.’ What do you think about that?
It’s funny because she really has a great career for herself and she’s a phenomenal writer, so she has a lot of different things going for her than the other wives. I was happy to hear that she is engaged so that’s great. Kim is kind of doing her thing with married men, NeNe has a different approach and Sheree and Lisa Wu are sweet. I don’t think people know that Kandi has a raw personality, so I would like to see who she is going to bump heads with, because she doesn’t take any mess either. That’s gonna be interesting. If you don’t pluck her nerves, she’s easygoing, but if you do, I can’t wait to see her mouthpiece. She’s not one of the wives where the husband makes a lot of money and she uses his money to start a business. She’s coming to the table like, ‘Damn, I am paid because I wrote ‘No Scrubs’ for TLC and those early hits for Destiny’s Child. You better check my resume.’ I love that.
Did you tape an appearance on the show?
We just went to lunch and that’s something that’s natural. What you see is what we would have naturally done. The only reason and the only person that I would have gone on that show for was Kandi and that’s love.
I hear you and Chilli have been approached about a TLC movie. Monique Coleman from ‘High School Musical’ says it’s her dream to play Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes in a film.
That’s awesome to hear. I am interested now whereas I wasn’t before. I actually do want to pursue making this movie. We’re talking to companies now so right now it’s just talk. People are actively pursuing it and that’s a great thing.
What actress would you like to play you in the film?
It would have to be a girl who has a lot of cool personality like a prissy tomboy. She has to look good with blond hair, because she must swag out the blond. I love Kyla Pratt. She has a lot of personality and a lot of spunk. I think Meagan Good can do it, too. I like both of them. In ‘ATL,’ Lauren London played me and she did a great job. ‘ATL’ was about Dallas Austin and my experience growing up in the skating rink. The only difference was that we [were not in a relationship]. That was part of the movie. I executive produced it, and it was a part of my life. That was really my story.
What actress should play Chilli? I pick Keshia Knight Pulliam or Tatyana Ali or anyone else who can brush down their baby hair.
Those are two good picks. Keshia still has that valley girl in her and so does Tatyana, so they make great looks, but they have to get rid of the valley girl part, because Rozanda has no valley girl in her at all. You can buy the lace-front weave and anybody can have her hair. All you got to do is call up Tyra Banks and ask her where she gets her wigs from.
Alicia Keys got you and Chilli to reunite and perform on last year’s BET Awards. How did it make you feel that a singer who wasn’t even in a girl group professionally wanted to celebrate TLC, SWV and En Vogue like that?
I love Alicia and that was the only reason I did it. We’ve never said yes to perform with anybody, ever. She is one of those people that you respect and feel honored to be asked and that’s why we said yes. I don’t count the BET Awards as a real TLC performance. That was just a mess altogether. That was a terrible day for me. It wasn’t a regular TLC show anyway. At a real TLC show, we run things and are energetic and dance. That was just a hot mess. I’m very excited to do what we do, and I’ll be back in my element. That sure wasn’t my element. I’m happy to be back, and we’ll be doing it the way that we do it.
When you hear stories about what’s going on with Destiny’s Child and Kelly Rowland having to fire Matthew Knowles to finally get attention, what are your thoughts?
They get mad when I say this, but I don’t give a damn. It was all about Beyonce anyway. She was my favorite, too, but come on. Her parents are over everything. Who do you think they were going for? It’s always Beyonce. It was supposed to be exactly the way it is now, Bey is on top. I love Beyonce, and I am a fan of hers. She was my favorite in the group even before they were Destiny’s Child and they were the Baby Dolls. She was so cute and pretty. I like all of them, and I wish Kelly the best. When you’re in a girl group, you have differences, and you have to learn how to respectfully agree to disagree. There are a lot of things that happen behind the scenes that people don’t know about. Some girl groups have girls trying to steal other girls’ boyfriends and that’s the ultimate no-no. You have situations like the Kelly thing and Beyonce’s parents. You can say that I’m out for everybody, but if Lisa was to bring somebody in that’s her boyfriend, then I’m gonna feel like you got Lisa’s back more than mine, and that’s gonna be a no-no. I just think that brings a conflict of interest in the beginning. That would have been a hard group for me to be in, because I would have been like your mommy and daddy are running things and they’re gonna have you at heart the most. That’s just how I feel.
There are currently no girl groups in the music business. They all seem to break up. Why do you think it’s like that?
I feel like girls are anal, bitchy and bitter. They’re jealous, envious and compete with each other even though they say they don’t. It always brings issues. They can’t differentiate that this is business, and we don’t have to be best friends. We just have to work together. People have a hard time living with that, because it becomes fake and you have to keep up this whole façade, and you just can’t deal with it and break up. At the end of the day, it’s about making money and having a career. Nobody said you have to go home and hug every day. Some girls can’t deal with that, and I’ve always had girl problems. Girls and me just don’t mix. They’ve always been jealous, tried to take my boyfriends and lie on me. I get it because I’ve always had that happen to me. That’s why I would never do a girl group again. I’m happy to have been with the two I was with, but I would never bring another girl in and start a new group. You don’t have to worry about that with me.

TLC may have been the exception to the rule,because had Lisa Lopes not p*****ed,they may very well would have stay together for quite a bit longer. Go all the way back to Diana Ross and The Supremes and you will find that the history of girl groups is filled with jealousy,back biting and overall dysfunction. Male groups suffer from the same issues but they work that ***** out and stay together.The Temptations went through many lineup changes but stayed together for damn near 50 years!!!! The O’Jays,The Whispers,even New Edition had a an incredible run. Levi Stubbs,was one of his generation’s greatest singers and could have left The Four Tops for a lucrative solo career,Stayed with his group until he died last year.Females DON’T DO THAT! The very second one gets a little shine..wooooosh out the door and the group is OVER! Look at every female group that came out over the last 10 years.TLC, Destiny’s Child,En Vouge and The *****cat Dolls were the only one’s to be huge and none of them were able to have the longevity of a male group. Most record companies consider themselves LUCKY to get 3 albums out of a girl group which is why TLC was one of the best. The three of them truly needed one another and each one knew that a solo career wouldn’t bring in as much money as a group project. T-Boz was on the money IMO.

I don’t think they are unsuccessful because they are catty. I think it is because usually the females who want to sing and perform, want to be the star or the DIVA. And in a group thats when the conflict begans. Many a male group has worked without a Lead or a star.

EnVogue (Dawn Robison), TLC (Left Eye), Destiny Child (Beyonce’s parents), Supremes (Diana Ross), ***** Cat Dolls (Nicole S. tried and failed), Danity Kane (Aubrey O.) etc…
Why? For female groups it’s about image and not the music.
For men it’s about music, so they can add and remove members without skipping a beat.

I loved TLC back in the day, I still listen to their old cds…T-Boz’s voice wasn’t the best singing voice but it had style to it. It flowed well with their sound and it was most definitely original. She could never capitalize off her voice alone, TLC was huge because of their whole style, meaning the way they dressed, their message and of course Left Eye’s flow…

@FRANKY DEVILLE(JUST BROUGHT A CADILLAC) that is so true. Dont blame her parents, blame us the consumer. We put B in her position, not to say she owes us anything (but the good music and great tours she has been giving us). She just had that stand out power. So of course if something is working, why try an mess it up. They started out as a girl group but Beyonce made it a solo act. They all did (at least tried to) and it’s not Beyonce or the team faults the others did not have what it took to continue on like Beyonce. I personally loved Kelly’s CD and I got it. And, the other members may have had stand alone quality had they been promoted, pushed, and glamorized. It’s rather simple to do and they all could sing so that was never a question…

Tina & Mathew gave up their beautiful home in the surburb of Houston to move into a small apartment to fund the groups dreams. What did the other parents do???? If DC never made it, the Knowles could have lost everything. We down black parents who are not there & who don’t support their children. We down the ones who go beyond expectations. That was really a good interview. T-Boz appeared to be focused and on point. She hit certain points with a slight degree on cynicism that I absolutely love!!!! I liked TLC as a group but T=Boz was always the one that stood out for me.
Left Eye= Cute w/ a little “hood” in her! Showed her “gansta” when she burned down Andre’s house!!!
Chili= Cute. All of them had equal billing but she always had the appearance that she thought she should be the HBIC.

As I’ve stated on another Beyonce thread, if another person (not her daddy or any other family member) was managing DC and Beyonce still walked the same path to success then so be it…but, I have a strong feeling that family wants family to succeed more than anyone else and no one can tell me that extra time and effort was not put in to push Beyonce to the status she has now. Of course she’s talented, beautiful, and smart but I think the vision gets clouded by the fact that her father and mother both had a significant hand in the direction DC went…We’ll never know any other outcome than the one that is but it’s definitely something to ponder on…

You’re right and I’m sure the other girl’s parents saw this as an opportunity to get their careers off the ground, but I would have also foreseen exactly what happened (especially with LeToya and Latavia)and that’s complications with contracts and the overall direction of the group. It’s kind of like a trade-off with Kelly and Michelle, they had the opportunity to be a part of the best selling girl group of all time but yet they’ll forever be in the shadows of the lead singer and the most successful member – Beyonce. I don’t really know what the best choice would have been but I can forever see both of them struggling for the rest of their careers to get out of that shadow and hold their own…

Take Beyonce off that list, please. I understand it’s “cool” to like her and she is not without total talent, but you can’t list her as on par with Whitney, Mariah, Toni, Natalie or Chaka. That’s just not how it is.

I’m almost certain that male groups had similar problems that females groups had. i.e jealousy, back stabbing, and all the likes. I think the reason men groups had more longevity is because of the way men (in general) deal with issues like those.
Most men are not as emotional (by nature) as women. Men can let things like that go and look toward the success of the group.
Women don’t forgive and forget as easily. Once there’s some underlying tension in a women’s group–it’s just a matter of time before they’re yesterdays news. The only difference between HOW long they manage to stay together is if there is some true talent all along—i.e En Vogue!!

Yeah, again you make a good point, I guess I just see the strong potential in the other two members (especially Kelly) and I think that they’ll have more of a struggle instead of an edge due to their *****ociation with DC.
Parents generally pull out the stops for their own kids before all others, no matter how well intentioned they are. It’s just a fact of life. Kelly should have struck out on her own a little sooner, but better late than never.
As for TBoz, I can’t hate on her for being honest about how she feels. At least she’s not snickering in private, getting busted and then backtracking. And it’s not like she’s coming out of left field – she’s just saying what a lot of folks are afraid to say.
I do feel sorry that she does not seem to have been blessed with the true friendships of sistahood. Maybe she should pay attention to the character of the folks with whom whe surrounds herself. Sounds like she’s been hanging around too many industry folks…

Please read the biographies of Sam Cooke, Bobby Womack, Rick James, David Ruffin, Otis Williams and you will read about all the petty, jealous backstabbing things that these men did to other men behind money, women and revenge.
Male groups are not doing any better than girl groups and they do not last longer either. There are 2 times as many male groups as female so that goes to show you right there that the Men are equally as ***** as women. They express it differently with Anger but that is one of the most deadly emotions, Period. For every male group listed as long lasting and touring you can count a female group that did the exact same thing, getting back together, touring again, replacing members and or reality TV. The Supremes did it, SWV did it, Jade did it, TLC did it, Brownstone did it, EnVogue did it….
En Vogue, TLC, SWV and Destiny’s Child. What do they all have in common? They have all broke up at one time or another.

I think she would have had more success. I mean, she was definitely a strong member of DC but she can sing and she’s beautiful and has style. I think if she had gotten new management sooner, like maybe after their Destiny Fulfilled album, she could have really done more. But like someone else said earlier, her solo album was the first one released and it went double platinum….it was their way of testing the market and then they promoted and pushed the anti*****tion of Beyonce’s album like no other member. Yes, I love Beyonce and yes I think she’s multi-talented and hard working but one would have to be blind to not see how much of a difference was made with all the members and their promotion/album production. But, I guess Kelly felt the need to have loyalty, whether it was because Matt is her father or because of other reasons, she should have branched out sooner…but, you never know, we may have only seen the beginning of Kelly’s potential…

For those who think Kelly and Michelle may have been successful solo artists had it not been for Matthew or if only they had better marketing, that is not true.
Not everyone in life is going to make it to that number one spot- they just aren’t. Marlon Jackson can sing and dance but out of that family only Janet, Jermaine and Mike were destined for success outside the group. Rebbie had one big hit so I wont count her.
Every person has a talent threshold and you reach that and then you either rise to icon status or you stay at that level and just continue to get by. Very few ever make icon level and they are:

Mariah
Beyonce
Diana
Madonna
Janet
Cher
Barbara
Celine Dion
Patti Labelle
Chaka Khan
All the other singers may have had a good album once or twice, had a good tour once or twice, even hit number one once or twice but they are NOT destined for icon status and that is just they way it is. They can not blame that on anyone else or anything else- it is the way of the world and the pecking order.

Yes, women can be jealous and petty…and Tionne just proved it with that catty interview.
First of all the both of them were jealous of Lisa. No, Lisa wasn’t perfect and she had her issues, but she was the most talented of that group and probably had the biggest heart. I always thought of Tionne and Chili as talentless chicks who just happened to get lucky and form a group that had a certain look and appeal that was hot at the time. Neither of them have done that much since TLC although it was just timing. I give her her props for being part of that trio, but neither Chili nor Tionne had any hope of a career of their own.
What happens with girl groups is that for the most part, women with singing talent or who are in groups are often not up on the business end of things. They may be a cute girl who is plucked out of obscurity with dreams of stardom (i.e. C*****ie, Ashanti, etc.) or have a real talent (i.e. Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson, etc.) Once they get into the game, they are going to have a bunch of men in their ears, from those who want to hook up with them to enjoy the fruits of the lifestyle, to those who want to do business with them and exploit them for their money. The lifestyle of a celebrity female is usually fraught with all of the above, especially in the music business. They often end up in bad or abusive relationships and end up broke. Those like Lisa in TLC and Dawn in EnVogue are painted as rebels because they speak up when the money isn’t right. Since so many girl groups are put together by others, of course the women don’t get along. They were never friends in tne first place. But the men go through the same things and that’s why they break up. The business will separate anyone from loved ones if they don’t have some personal strength.
What actually makes Beyonce unique is that she has strong support behind her and a helluva work ethic. I’m sure there are parents on here – you mean to tell me you would support someone’s else’s career at the expense of your own child’s especially when it’s your child who goes harder than the rest? Beyonce is talented but her work ethic is a huge part of her success…along with the total support of her family. She is no different than Serena and Venus or any other athletic family who sacrifices to help their child’s dream.
The Knowles Family took the risk. Matthew gave up his six figure job sold their big ***** house move into an apartment.Even when he did not have a job he use his own money to finance studio time to make demos before they have a record deal. Those other girls parents did not sacrifice nothing. Matthew could have cut the other girls and spend his money on getting Beyonce alone a record deal. which would have save him a lot of money.DC needed Beyonce. Beyonce did not need DC

Need to correct you on those examples you used both Ashanit and C*****ie had been working on their careers LONG before they blew up. They both had contracts and demos made with producers prior to getting a hit and getting the big studios involved. Fantasia was on the gospel circuit and if you didn’t know her WHOLE family on BOTH sides has been recording music and performing for about 30+ years so the Barrinos are a bit more famous than her cousins Kci and JoJo in the gospel side of the business.
There are so many male performers who also DID NOT know the business side of the industry and ended up being taken advantage of, filing bankruptcy, losing everything and blowing their money on crap including drugs and women.

I agree with T-Boz saying Beyonce is on top because her parents groomed her to be from the beginning. From the get go Beyonce was always the one singing lead. Envogue that is a group because you hear all 4 singers sing. TLC that is a group cuz you hear T-Boz sing, Chilli sing, Left-Eye (RIP) sing, write & rap. Desitny Child was about one child Beyonce. Otherwise why wasn’t it called Destiny Children? Which would have made more sense if they were a four women group? If it was not for LeToya’s first album my mentality would have been “oh she is just a back up singer for Destiny Child”. When Destiny Child first came out Beyonce was not singing lead. You couldn’t tell who was the lead because there was no lead singer. I remember when they made a guest appearance on the “Smart Guy” The other girls had more speaking parts than Beyonce. It was later on that Beyonce was pushed to the forefront.

It is true Philip did several solo albums, but it also true that the label who originally signed Earth Wind and Fire agreed to do the solo deal with Bailey after Maurice white put in a good word for his friend. Maurice White did solo deals, as well as many of the members of Earth Wind and Fire. THEY NEVER BROKE UP. Check your facts.

T-Boz may have an inflated perception of herself, but hey, if you don’t love yourself, who will. I take issue with her saying she would “never bring another girl into TLC” that’s funny because she and Chilli did a reality show called “R U the girl.” Does anyone else remember it? It was lame, just like her! It’s not just females, its anybody who feels inferior to the next person, that includes men, so that’s a null and void statement.

The film had been in the works for a long time, but once they finally decided to make it, they exaggerated a few things (i.e. characters and their storylines.)

Puzzled Look …can somebody give me a definitive answer on what “real”?? Tionne’s reality, while real to HER is probably not identical to Beyonce’s, to Rhianna’s …hell, may not be the same as Chili’s and they were in the same group!! Everyone’s reality is based on cir*****stances …my “keeping it real” prolly isn’t the same as anyone elses …or it could be. Just saying.
I think Beyonce needed DC just as much as they needed her…but for different reasons.
Her management wanted to “refine her so to speak….Get her ready for a solo career….Get her used to the grinds of an entertainer.
Plus–I thought it was always known that Beyonce would eventually fly solo.
If even I knew that, why in the hell didn’t the rest of DC know it?
Once again–like her or not, she is one of the most hardest working women in the industry today.
I see more pictures of her performing than I do with her getting “surprised” by the papparazzi.
Seems to me there are plenty other entertainers that–IMO–let the paps know where they are to get a photo opt–making them look like they just happened to be out and about.

Seemingly Lisa was a roughneck, but she brought color to this group. See if it was T-Boz or Chilli who carried the group then they would have been able to float on without Lisa. Lisa was the key ingredient to this recipe. So T-Boz SIT DOWN.

I totally agree with you on the homegirl friends tip! I have been through some rough times in my life, as most people have, and feel so blessed to have my two best friends in the whole world. I do not understand how grown women don’t have at least one or two friends. Aside from God and my family, my friends are my world.
Just to give you an example, I accidentally knocked over my phone late last night circa 2 a.m. and accidentally hit the speed-dial for one of my best friends. I didn’t even realize what I’d done, but she actually called me back right then to make sure I was OK. What a blessing that is.
I actually feel sorry for T-Boz because she is missing out on one of the best things in life – true sistahood.

She was then – and continues to be – overpromoted & overexposed by her family and her label nonstop. Which is the only reason for her “popularity.” Just like Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, etc.
Beyonce *needed* a group in the beginning. She was simply too plain to make it as a solo artist back when Destiny’s Child first hit the scene. There were too many superior female R&B and pop singers back then for her to compete with. She simply wouldn’t have made it.
Now Beyonce has a stellar publicity team (many on her team formerly worked for Jennifer Lopez) along with her father & mother backing her. She’s a good performer & singer. But Beyonce has yet to do *anything* that deserves over-the-top exceptional praise. Buying Grammys, magazine covers & awards show appearances left, right & sideways ain’t cutting it.

Even though I love Beyonce’s music, I’m going to have to agree with T-Boz. If you ever stop to think about it; all the stuff that Destiny’s Child were doing when they were together; the promoting, and the CD covers..Beyonce WAS ALWAYS IN THE FRONT. Everytime you heard them sing, BEYONCE was mainly the one who had the lead parts, and who actually came across as conceited because some of their live performances it was as if Beyonce was trying to take over the whole show! I agree with T Boz Beyonce’s parents marketed Beyonce more than Kelly and Michelle because they wanted her to be more of the overacheiver..that’s why she had all or the majority of the leading verses in songs, she was always standing in front of the other 2 girls, and the camera was always more focused on her face than it was on the other members of the group. With TLC it was different. Their songs focused on EACH GIRL, and it showcased EACH GIRL’s talent..T Boz sometimes had the lead, Left Eye had the raps, and Chilli was the soft soprano. Then sometimes it would switch and Left Eye or Chilli would have the first verse of a song, and then T Boz would come in and so on and so forth. And honestly at some of the award shows I’ve seen Destiny’s Child at, Beyonce was always THE FIRST and sometimes THE ONLY one out of the group to talk! And you could tell that the other two girls wanted to give their thanks to people..but she wanted to be in control of everything. Along with the help of her parents as well. It seems to me, from my perspective that Destiny’s Child was actually just a boosting prop for Beyonce to help her become more noticed by different people so she could eventually become a successful SOLO artist. I like the way that T Boz observes things, and gives her general staement, and I think it was well thought out, and spoke on. I hope she continues to do well..TLC forever
